I think it just shows us that Fox News and the right wing media ecosystem has captured a significant part of the country. Propaganda works all to well. Too many of our people have been captured by the bamboozle perpetuated by these corrupt and destructive charlatans. As the great Carl Sagan once implied when you've been captured by the bamboozle you don't get un-captured easily. It's rare. Combined with the fact we're showing signs of being a lazy democracy i.e. people refusing to participate in it, shows we're in trouble. Remember all those thousands of Israelis protestors in the streets for months? A healthy democracy requires an eternal vigilance and too many of our people are tired, broke and broken, ignorant, distracted, and disengaged. Seems they prefer to turn it all over to someone who'll simply tell them what to do. But we'll fight on.

Yes. Infuriating. Even worse, a Republican Senator is blocking the filling of openings for officers in the military ranks (not unlike the way they blocked federal judges and justices) so the next Republican President can decide who fills those positions and, in so doing, is doing damage to the readiness of the military. A Republican will be filling them with people of the "Proud Boys" ilk so their next election cheating will be backed up by the military. Republicans also tend to block pay increases for working people ... including for lower ranking military ... which is at least part of what is keeping recruitment levels low.

New Mexico through a court filing on another man that participated stated he was disqualified, and as such, it is already an insurrection there. No federal case overturned the New Mexican court's decision, and as such, it should be federal. I live in DC and know many people who work for the government. The idea that the GOP and Heritage Foundation are promulgating that Federal employees simply ignore the policy choices of elected officials is complete BS. I’ve heard both democrats and republicans comment that a course of action isn’t a good idea or what they think should be done, but it reflects the executive policy or Congressional legislation. Every agency already has politically appointed senior and mid-level roles for people to directly advocate for political policy within the agency. However these people seldom have the deep expertise that career civil servants have - they are often very ignorant of the applicable laws and rules that make implementing policies complex. For example, it is common for a regulation to change when a new bill is passed but in the implementation it becomes clear that the most expedient way of complying with the new reg would cause a violation of one or more existing laws, rules or policies. Figuring out how to implement the will of the people as reflected in the policies of elected officials is taken seriously. Stripping out those experts, replacing them with politically-focused generalists, and then doing a wholesale rip and replace every time the president’s party changes is a recipe for chaos and disaster.

I remember how Rex Tillerson hollowed out the state department. He got rid of 60% of the diplomatic staff and nearly all of the senior diplomats. Generations of a government Civil Service being run by leaders who have been chosen for their political affiliations rather than their qualifications, experience and competency has left the administrative side of American government staggering from one crisis to another. Never mind the fact that that leadership changes every time a new Incumbent sits in the White House, State or local Legislature and that there are no tests of qualifications, experience and competency for a seat in Congress or indeed ANY level of Authority. A simple majority in an election is the single major qualification required to make and apply rules that affect a whole culture. One of the virtues of the Westminster system and its conventions is the notion of expertise driven free and frank advice. Elected officials have their policies and the civil service advises on their implementation. This is accompanied by an analysis of costs, benefits, unintended consequences and additional options. Once the politicians have received that advice and make the decision to go ahead, or not. The civil service role is to implement those decisions - good or bad. Under this system it is clear where responsibility lies and no politician when confronted with disaster can say “I didn’t know”. They often try it, but rarely with any credibility. The idea of a system too heavy with political appointees - often down several levels in some agencies - acts as a block on free and frank advice. Dumb arses litter the playing field, looking after their agenda and that if their principal, whilst the people who actually know what they’re doing have find work around. You’ve already got too many politicians involved and,bas recent years show, most of them would have trouble finding their arses with their own hands.

There are numerous countries with non-partisan career public servants whose jobs are to support the government of the day. I’m long retired but I did have the opportunity of working as a public servant for two ideologically different parties. While the two may have different priorities it changed nothing in the work I performed nor that of my colleagues. The public service is scrupulously non-political. It ensures there is organizational continuity and a “corporate memory”. It’s a shame, and very shortsighted this may all be lost if Trump wins in 2024.

How about some basic competency tests for potential civil servants? See if they have read and understand the constitution. See if they have critical thinking skills. Do they know what a democracy is? Require some diversity reading such as 'An African American and Latinx History of the United States' by Paul Ortiz and a couple other similar books. Include a test of basic math comprehension. Gotta turn our current sorry state around and for-real make America a great country (not the Trump version!)
