I'm with you Chris on the score for All the Light We Cannot See. It's definitely the most memorable score of the nominees. James Newton Howard wrote such iconic music themes and I relisten to them a lot constantly. Hope he wins!! 🙏

Re 25:05, "We gotta add another letter": I suggest the Golden Globes, which would turn the EGOT into the EGGOT. The issues are that the Globes aren't what they used to be, for both good and ill, it would put even more emphasis on movies and TV, and winning the Globes but not a Grammy would still be an EGOT, which might be confusing. The other EGOT, anyone?

Chris, I think Aiden AKA Harold & Maude is spot on about Emilia Pérez being a red herring that's overrated. Given the reviews aren't that great, it's definitely not going to be a highbrow critics pick and I'd be hard-pressed to imagine what appeal a foreign language musical has with Oscar voters.

Having seen it, I don't totally agree. The obvious comp is Everything Everywhere All at Once -- or even CODA -- because it's an "unlikely" Oscars movie with a cast that people really love (having experienced some of that first-hand at Telluride). It's also "cool," which matters! I have it as a soft favorite right now, it feels like one of the only movies that could win on a preferential ballot because I don't think it will be all that polarizing -- or any more polarizing than EEAAO.
@JoshFriedman7864 ай бұрын
@@chrisjrosen EEAAO wasn't really polarizing, it was a juggernaut in a weak year with no consensus alternative so it was more likely than CODA. Also you just proved my point because the Oscar voters barely nominate movies that are "cool." I've seen Emilia Pérez, the concept of the musical aspect just doesn't work and the story goes nowhere, its strongest parts are Zoe Saldana and the songs but with stronger serious contenders coming down the line later this year this could perform like The Color Purple last year.

EEAAO wasn’t polarizing and neither is Emilia Perez. You can dislike it and I’m sure you will trash it all season but it’s clearly the movie right now that feels most likely to get double-digit nominations. I don’t even love it - Rebel Ridge is way better in terms of Netflix movies - but to compare it to The Color Purple is clown shit.

@@chrisjrosen Hey, I'm not trashing it. I thought it was totally fine, I just don't think the musical aspect works when dealing with serious subject matter about a trans character. I've seen a lot of negative reviews on Letterboxd mostly from Hispanic individuals who really didn't like that part of it either. I only have my doubts until I see some real evidence from the guilds or NBR or AFI Top 10 lists. Stay tuned!

FFS Chris, you're letting musical theater haters bully you off of Wicked. The whole "Wicked could be a disaster/get zero nominations" is purely anti-hopedicting. The craftsmanship looks exceptional. When a new trailer releases, musical theater influencers drop everything they're doing to analyze it. Buzz for everything they're putting out reminds me of Tolkien fans waiting with baited breath for anything about the LotR trilogy (and I was one of them, so I remember) mixed with anticipation for Barbie (I was also one of those). How much of this is about people biased against anything that skews female, esp when the main character is played by a Black woman? I'm just wondering whether they're going to category fraud Ariana Grande into supporting or not. She's fully channeling Kristin Chenoweth and ignore her at your own peril.

Sorry Wicked just doesn’t look good. I don’t blame Chris. The trailer looks like it’ll be a disaster.

I think it's hanging around at 11/12 and I do agree it'll do well with crafts. But I'm concerned that it's only "Part One" and there have been other movies out of the festivals -- notably Saturday Night and The Brutalist -- that feel like better bets right now.
