China is flexing its military muscle. Its forces are carrying out exercises right on the border of Taiwan. That’s not that unusual - China has carried out similar drills before, but now they're more frequent and getting closer to Taiwan itself.
Is China is about to invade? And if it does, will the US come to Taiwan's aid, and could Taiwan be about to become the next Ukraine?
According to archaeological evidence, Taiwan was originally inhabited entirely by Austronesians who trace their cultural links to the islands to the south and east. When the Dutch set up their small colonial operations in southern Taiwan in the early 17th century, occupying a tiny area, there was little Chinese presence on the island.

If we seeking more "official independence" may cause the war so that is why most of the people rather stay in this awkward and ambiguous politics status. 2:14 and for people who want it independence are actually means want to change the official national name from Republic of China (Taiwan) to Republic of Taiwan and having new constitution. The United States will setup a base on what is historically Chinese territory. Effectively turning Taiwan into a Puerto Rico. That would be wholly unacceptable to the Chinese. The UK didn't really want to handover HK to a communist regime, but, they felt like they had to thanks to the 99 year clause that was added in the 1898 when the UK was negotiating with the Qin for more territory. The dispute is who governs who. Ukraine on the other hand has been recognised as an sovereign country for many years by all countries with the exemption of Russia.

One would expect Channel 4 to have their fact checked... Taiwan the island was not ruled by China until the mid-17th century (invaded and ruled by the remnants of the Ming dynasty, taking over from the Dutch), and then the Manchu-led Qing dynasty from the late 17th century to 1895, when the Japanese Empire took over Taiwan as a colony.

We have to recognise the Austronesian peoples who started inhabiting Taiwan long before the Hans arrived, just like the subjects of the Crown would recognise the fact that Austronesian peoples had been living in Australia long before British arrived. 2. For the most of the recent two millennia, Taiwan has NOT been ruled (directly or indirectly) by China. Even until the end of Ming Dynasty (1368-1644, the second last dynasty), Taiwan was not governed by the Chinese empire (See Tonio Andrade (2008), How Taiwan Became Chinese: Dutch, Spanish and Han Colonization in the Seventeenth Century). 3. It was Qing dynasty, the last Chinese empire ruled by the Manchus, that Taiwan was taken by the imperial force of Qing. The Qing document stated that Taiwan had never been ruled by previous Chinese empires. 4. Before that, the territorial sovereignty of Taiwan was only for a brief while a question between Japanese and the Dutch, with the former not claiming sovereignty over Taiwan, nor recognising Dutch claims over Taiwan (see Adam Clulow (2014), The Company and the Shogun: The Dutch Encounter with Tokugawa Japan)

Taiwan’s history was not always intertwined with China. Ching Empire and Ming Empire are not “China.” Ming never ruled Taiwan and Ching only effectively governed part of Taiwan in the later years of its reign but not very long. “China” happened only after 1911 by that time Taiwan was already a Japanese colony since 1895 until the end of WWII. The world still owes Taiwan the self-determination it long deserves. We form it anyway.

I find it boring for you to discuss this. First of all, the United Nations has recognized that Taiwan is a part of China, and Taiwan is not a country. The Chinese government can travel to Taiwan at any time. Secondly, I think Taiwanese are very naive. If you choose independence, then you must bear the threats and sanctions from the Chinese government. If you want to join the Chinese government, then you should push this way as soon as possible The current state cannot be maintained forever, and the Taiwan issue will have to be resolved sooner or later.

Of course, there are elements of Chinese identity which make up Taiwan. And honestly, I think the decline of countries recognizing Taiwan is because of a fear of China and a desire to work with a world power, not because they perceive Taiwan as a part of China. DEMOCRATIC and fair elections in Taiwan came out in favor of pro-independence. Why can't a country that desires to be free and independent continue to maintain their identity? The Chinese desire for unification is based on nationalistic ideals and authoritarianism and does nothing for a democratic and liberal society that rejects this kind of thinking.

Whatever your view on Taiwan, it's factually incorrect to say that Taiwan has been directly ruled from China for most of the last 2 millenia until the civil war. For about 90% of that time it wasn't ruled directly from China at all. It was ruled by China for a little over 200 years until the Imperial Japanese took it. I don't deny that Beijing does have genuine arguments that Taiwan should be part of China again but those falsehoods above are really poor journalism.

Before that it was inhabited by Taiwanese aboriginals who are purportedly the ancestors of all Austronesian people's around the Pacific, Malaysia and Indonesia and Madagascar. Taiwanese aboriginals are a huge part of this story and their voice deserves to be heard. A majority of Taiwanese aboriginals feel that they don't belong to any Han descended culture and as such diverge from all concepts of statehood for Taiwan that come from the Han perspective.

Taiwan was never ever ruled by the PRC founded in 1949 and only partly ruled by China under the Ming , and the Qing dynasty was Manchurian. If historical occupation (boots on the ground) is to solely to determine "ownership" of a country then Japan has probably a far greater legitimate claim to Taiwan than the PRC. Unfortunately Taiwan cannot apply to rejoin the UN while it carries the baggage of an ROC Constitution (1947) and ROC name which was devised by the KMT and predates the foundation of the PRC by two years. This video has numerous mistakes which other users have highlighted. Describing Taiwan as not being a state is a gross misunderstanding of international law. The criteria for statehood are a population, a territory and absolute power over the first two. Taiwan most definitely has a territory and a population and is able to rule them independently of any foreign influence. Whether Taiwan describes itself as such is inconsequential, but Taiwan is a country. Moreover, numerous scholars have written on the topic of polls suggesting the Taiwanese wish to maintain the status quo rather than declaring independence. For the reasons highlighted above and China’s belligerent attitude towards Taiwan, these polls must be presented with better context. All in all, this is a very poorly researched and poorly written video, wholly undeserving of a Channel 4 logo, which is usually a sign of good journalism.

Supporting/supplying Taiwan will not be the same situation as with Ukraine, Taiwan is an small island off the CHinese mainland, it's much easier to prevent supplies reaching Taiwan, the Chinese navy can easily surround Taiwan preventing any aid coming through, unless US navy warships secure a supply channel, but this may lead to further direct Sino-US hostilities.

For what it's worth, I find Yuen Yuen Ang's concept of the clash of rival gilded ages the most persuasive way of seeing this rivalry. I see their elites as not on my side; but I see Western elites as not on my side either. I see working people in the West as as on the same side as me. But so are working people in China.
