That's very similar to my story omg, Before the second movie I didn't really have much history with the Sonic Franchise, apart from playing one game which was Sonic Heroes as a kid, mind you though I spent HOURS playing that game though so it was a fundamental game of my childhood. Then in later years I sometimes watched Sonic Boom Cartoon when it was airing on tv if it was conveniently on, I also saw the 2020 First movie in theatres which I liked but didn't really suck me in. then Sonic 2 came out and like you said happened to you something inside me awoke and very soon after I left that theatre I was changed and quickly became apart of the Fandom and started watching/playing and researching/catching up on most other Sonic stuff.

There's a particular moment in thecartoon recap of the Sonic movies that we need to talk about, specifically towards the end about recapping the second Sonic movie - the moment I'm talking about in the recap cartoon is when Toonstarterz say that Sonic's human friend along with Tails and Knuckles think that the yellow fur colour of Sonic's super form is terrible and think that's hilarious. I just want you to know that it doesn't work as a joke and that he's outright blasphemed what I consider to be Sonic's most glorious transformation. Also, why did he get Talis to think that everyone in that same moment are a bunch of a-holes? Since when has anyone in the kingdom of the Sonic fanbase ever thought that Sonic's super form has a dreadful colour to it? It gives me no pleasure to discover that Toonstarterz completely disrespected my favourite ever form of Sonic himself through the medium of jesting. After all, I'm one of those Sonic fans that takes things very literally. I'm not sure if that's how he see these movies or if he can't remember them well that's made him resort to having created this cartoon recap. This is one of many reasons why I'm doing my CGI remake of the anime Sonic X to convince Sega to close the book on the Sonic series to a spectacular bowing out. All I'm saying is please try to understand where I'm coming from.
