As a DIE HARD Hawkeye and Niner fan, I felt the strongest swirl of emotions as the Niners acquired CMC after being in the 4th row at the Rosebowl of Iowa vs Stanford and watching CMC split the secondary for a 75 yard play on the FIRST play of the game. Watching Bethaerd and Kittle connect on plays gave me the dopamine rushes similar to that of what I imagine ketamine feels like. Now having a Cy QB lead us to the promise land only to have the HC blunder it away in spectacular fashion leaves me with a sense of dread, yet with a complete belief in victory for our future, Purdy IS him. That being said, I greatly appreciate any Hawkeye content anyone provides, and this is a gem in that category. Lets GO HAWKS and I bleed red and gold. Taylor is the GOAT no debate. Subbed

Took my son to this game for his 16th birthday, his first in person Hawkeyes game. There were a lot of SDSU fans in the section we were seated in and they were confused and frustrated as hell. The whole Hawkeye faithful in attendance realized early on that the offense was not going to do anything and we were just screaming out lungs out on each play the defense was out there like our life was on the line if we didn't. My son just referenced this as his favorite all time Hawkeyes game last night. I'm glad he enjoyed it so much. I along with the bulk of the attendees left there thinking "WTF was that?". Everyone had a bewildered look on their faces and were nearly silent as we all filed out the exits. It was bizarre. The punting and punt coverage was absolutely beautiful. Tory Taylor was SO GREAT the past several seasons...Go Hawks!

That was one of my favorite games ever. Right up there with the game where Penn State lost 6-4... after missing a 60 yard field goal with mere seconds left that would have given them a 7-6 win. Isaac, have you watched "The Defense Never Rests", NFL Films' hour-long cut of the 1999 NFC Championship Game? That's the one where the Bucs took a 3-0 lead, the Rams tied it at 3 after one quarter, the Rams led 5-3 at halftime, the Bucs led 6-5 after 3 quarters, and the Rams got a late touchdown to go up 11-6 and held onto the lead when the replay officials badly botched a call, calling a clear catch by Bert Emanuel incomplete (leading to the NFL putting in the Bert Emanuel Rule in the offseason to make certain the replay officials couldn't eff up another call in the same way.) I think you'd really enjoy it.

My high school team from Kentucky played a game up in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium. They did a tribute video to what they consider the greatest high school game in Indiana State history. It was a 2-0 final score won on a second half safety. What is funny is that the greatest game in Kentucky high school football history was a 59-56 game. That game had a receiver catch for over 300 yards, about 1500 yards of total offense and featured the future QB and running back for the University of Louisville. No turnovers until about 90 seconds left when a deep pass was intercepted at the 1 yard line to seal the win. Everyone talked about how great that 59-56 game was, but the defensive coaches for both schools said that was the worst game they were ever a part of.

1920s style football was much lower scoring from a passing game point of view due to a rounder football that was less pointy and therefore less aerodynamic than a modern football. With a lower scoring game with much fewer lengthy drives, field position trick plays like punting on 1st down and punting on a return were sometimes very strongly encouraged in the 1920s by coaches in a few games if both a team and that team's coaches felt especially confident that the other team had both a bad offense and an inferior punting game, especially in quarters in which one's own team had a wind advantage. Occasionally a punt from beyond the line of scrimmage might also be seen in those years in which punting after crossing the line of scrimmage was allowed. In the NFL, Danny White of the Dallas Cowboys was the last player to make such a play before the NFL changed the rules in such a way that a punt on a play from scrimmage had to be made while at least some part of the punter's body was at or behind the line of scrimmage. Danny White was a "triple threat" quarterback who could run and pass and punt, creating all sorts of extra potential problems for a defense to defend against, and made that play on a 4th down, after deciding he was unlikely to have enough room to dash the rest of the way for a 1st down. There is still a sometimes a place in football for a punt on a return, or for a punt on 1st down, but only if the other team is deemed to have a truly bad offense in modern terms, and when one's own offense is also not good, but still superior to the other team's offense. 1st down is the one time when the other team can't afford to play anyone deep enough to cover a punt, because otherwise the other team only has 10 people to cover a run, and it's then an easy 4 yards when the punter audibles to switch to a running play, most likely eventually leading to a new set of downs.
