Great video Stu. Just a suggestion for any city slickers like me who like to get out hunting but don't get much chance to, do some service shooting with your local service rifle club, some snap and rapid shooting over the 3 positions (standing at 100m, sitting at 200m and prone at 300m). Good practice for in the field where you get very limited shot times. Cheers!

A useful video. I am impressed that you have simple, not too expensive, kit that you have become very used to working with. Also, is the reticle on your Burris Fullfield II Scope the Plex (no mill dots) or the Ballistic Plex (with mil dots) ?
@HuntingwithStu4 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate yes these firearms are stock standard with the 30/30 over 40 years old and straight up open sights. The 30/06 is also pretty old as I bought it brand new in 1992. The scope has normal cross hairs with no mil dots mate. I think a lot of people can get carried away with tech and add on stuff but in the end one still needs to know how to shoot holding off or leading running targets. So long as I can hit a target size of a take away coffee lid at around 30m (pretty easy) on the run out to 200m (very hard) well then that is all the skill i need to do what I do.
@molecatcher33834 жыл бұрын
@@HuntingwithStu Thanks Stu, I shoot in Scotland but usually from quad sticks and only when the animals are standing still. I am hugely impressed the way you can shoot off-hand at moving a target, sometimes from a moving quad-bike or canoe. You could get a job in a circus. I suspected that you would have the normal cross hair sight, it fits in with a keep it simple philosophy. Keep making the vids, they are some of the best.

What I mean't mate is that they preform the best out to that distance. However, the 30/30 cal is very similar to the military 303 which is renowned for long range shooting. This is because the 303 is a long barreled rifle whereas the 30/30 is a short barrel carbine.

That's interesting re the shotgun ammo I have tried 00buck and felt it didn't kill well so gave up quick, tried bigger but never thought of going smaller might give that a go mate, not on pigs though not many of them around here but on goats which are also tough to kill even if thin skinned and slower moving, It never fails to amaze me the acceleration and speed of a pig from a standing start they are bl@@dy quick EH!
@HuntingwithStu4 жыл бұрын
Yes mate it is all about the gaps between the pellets. The large gap between big pellets are no good. However, the more pellets like 27 pellet SSGs from Black hawk ammo there is minimal gaps yet still a big pellet. Yes actually the pig is the fastest animal to gain their max speed from a standing start than any other animal, bit of trivia mate.

Hey Stu. Can you elaborate a bit more on the 12 Gauge loads that you use. As to shy don't you find the 000 or 00 buck less suitable. Didn't imagine that the BB load could penetate the hogs
@HuntingwithStu5 жыл бұрын
The OO 9 pellet SGs have too big a gap between pellets when the pig is out past 30m. The OOO or 18 pellet SGs are better. However, the Winchester Defender shells have a solid and 3 x ball bearings which hit hard. We do use a type of BB which work well and they are the ELEY AAA Alphamax game loads.

@@HuntingwithStu Thanks Stu. Till what range are the 000 or 18 pellets effective?
@HuntingwithStu5 жыл бұрын
Depends largely on the shotgun used as some shotties especially longer barrel models can reach out further than short barrel models and if you have a tight choke to keep the pattern tight then 60 to 80m is max. My max range with the Adler is around 30 to 40m with the best range for a kill shot is point blank out to 20m.

Thanks Stu. That was really insightful.

Does you base camp have a name or is it the ultimate man cave! Great education on shooting!

Thanks mate no name for the man cave just a camp to recover from blasting pigs.

Ever tried using solid slugs in the shotty? had any success with that if you have? Or at that point would you rather use the rifle?
@HuntingwithStu5 жыл бұрын
I use the Winchester defenders which have a solid slug and 3 x ball bearings
@DA2THFA1RY5 жыл бұрын
@@HuntingwithStu Those are pretty nasty loads, but have you tried a single 12 gauge slug? That's what I'm curious about, what sort of range you can get out of those, I assume about 75-100 meters max
@HuntingwithStu5 жыл бұрын
Yes I have used slugs and yes you can shoot out to 100m. The only thing with a solid is that if you are a bit off with your aim you will miss. Whereas with a pattern of shot you will still hit the target.

Does your 30 06 have a free floated barrel?

No mate she is just a stock standard recreational rifle. I don't need too great of accuracy as most of my target size is approx coffee mug size. Either the head or Heart lung area. The difference being is that most of my shots are on the run

I should look into setting up a camera to capture what I see as I get a lot of comments on where I place the killing shots especially on those fast running boars.

Nice video mate. If your ever in Gods country(Qld), I need to drag you out to our spot so you can tell us what we're bloody doing wrong haha. Cheers

Ha no worries mate. there is a lot of gaps between the action mate. Most people forget that I am showing the action parts of the hunt. Our trips normally consist of a lot of nothing then full on excitement until the next pig/ pigs.
@matthewmurray65385 жыл бұрын
@@HuntingwithStu yeah no worries mate. Your still getting a lot more than we do, though we haven't had this property for long either. Still getting to know the movements of the pigs and all, probably a little impatient aswell haha. Have you been shooting on that property for a while?

Yes mate I remember being on this place as a kid when Dad hunted on the place

Hi Stu. You mentioned that you shoot rifle with both eyes open. Is that why you shoot left handed, because you are left eye dominant and therefore taught yourself to shot left handed to align with your eye dominance? Or are you naturally left handed? I am right handed but left eye dominant and can’t shoot with both eyes open.
@HuntingwithStu5 ай бұрын
I'm naturally left handed and it is way better with both eyes open when you shoot. If you close one eye you get tunnel vision as you only see what is through the scope

hi great video also what firearm would be good for a 13 year old starter with guns
@outlawtanker12835 жыл бұрын
Depends if they have never shot any type of gun you would prolly be better off with a .22cal but if you want one a little bit bigger for pigs a 243 would be a a perfect gun for them both of those are wonderful guns.
@CrazyDog6515 жыл бұрын
I'll speak from personal experience as I'm a Junior, its really up to how tough your son is. If he not the biggest fella i have seen people get by with a .223 or even 7.62x39 with the 7.62 there's a bit more punch on the shooter but it hits harder as well. If hes a bit more on the bigger side .308 or .270 is away great or even a straight pull 12 gauge. But like what a lot of others say its personal preference if you know some guys ask them if your son could have a shot with their guns and see what he likes or better yet go to a gun shop and have a poke around. Hope this helps have a good one.

30-06 is a big caliber but did you know 270 has more energy out about 200m.
@HuntingwithStu5 жыл бұрын
No I didn't know that mate. My dad uses a 270 and he smacks em down. I was actually after a 270 when I bought the ruger. The gunshop said that they didn't have a 270 but they had one in 30/06 so I bought it.
