As an engineer who used to work for a supplier (did rear steer development on Hummer EV), it's nice to hear Jason actually know what he's talking about with the technical stuff. I appreciate it when journalists educate themselves beyond a level of "this feels good, I dislike this" etc

Jason nailed it at 18:18. When you’re a journalist, you need to check your own feelings and emotions at the door. That IS the problem with journalism nowadays. Bias. Check your bias, present the facts, and dress it in an entertaining way, without projecting your bias. It’s one of the things that makes journalism so damn hard.

People trust what they understand and what they have experience with. Numbers are meaningless to the part of the brain that assesses danger, only experience matters. And this can work in perverse ways. For example we aren't afraid of car accidents, but some are afraid of flying, and most people are terrified of nuclear accidents, while in reality you are far far more likely to die in a car than being killed by nuclear radiation, and planes are somewhere in between.

I think one should not only.be critical of they have been presented with but also look out for other conclusions as well so you will have some framework to go by.

I'm a self proclaimed Tesla Elon Musk hater much like Matt lol but objectively you can at least appreciate the way in which that company has revolutionised the EV industry and made them kinda cool albeit in a goofy or gaudy kind of way. Also, Teslas are overrated piles of trash and Matt does make some good points about that brand, it's boss and how they both conduct their business but true integrity in journalism as Jason has pointed out here is simply laying out the facts for what really they are with no bias or favouritism or whatever. And Matt unfortunately can't seem to allow his judgement to override his obvious hatred for the boss (Musk is pretty easy to hate Tbf) and just call it down the middle as he should. Took me 3 days to get through this podcast.... Jason is just soo good, his views on facts vs opinions should be something everyone strides to do it is really insightful but I have to say I don't understand Matt. They talked for 2 hours and 30 minutes and not once did it seem like he understood anything Jason said to him. I have to wonder how hard the truth had to hit him in the face for him to wake up. Tesla is not an evil company by any means and they are doing so much to bring forward the whole automotive industry. Opening up their patents, the book on 48V is epic and they even store their gigacastings outside so all competitor can see them in the flesh. Seems like Matt couldn't get past the Tesla autonomy demo video from 2016. The facts are that of course Tesla should have used another language in the video, the driver was needed. When people say the video is fake it is not entirely true, the Tesla actually did drive that route in one shot BUT they tried like 100 times that failed before the "perfect" one. We are in 2023, why do we need to go back to 2016. This makes no sense! Today more than 100.000 Teslas on US roads are equipped with the FSD software. So anyone knows someone who has access to FSD. Go try it for yourself, it is brilliant for 99% of the time and horrible for the last 1%. It is by no means FULL-SELF-DRIVING but it is also not a death machine or a scam. I would love to see Matt actually try a Tesla with FSD sometime you have to face your demons... and boy does Matt see a lot of demons at Tesla. Think about it Matt or the world will leave you behind.

Brilliant comment! You are spot on here. Tesla is the most forward looking company I know of constantly improving and iterating. It makes 0 sense to point out something they did wrong in the past and get fixated on that, when by now they have already addressed it, since they are constantly experimenting and learning. That’s their company culture. I will also point out that FSD is in BETA which is why it’s clearly called FSD BETA. Personally I would never pay for beta software but the 400k people that did, they did that on their own will. They were not tricked into buying it like your typical car dealership sales guy who tricks you into buying a LoJack and a bunch of other options you don’t need.

I wanted to yell at Matt at multiple points during this podcast, just to tell him "use the damn thing before you talk shit about it." I have used FSD beta, from v10.69 to 11.3 to 11.4.9 now. It is imperfect, and I'd put it at 85-90% reliable. There are some common edge cases it struggles with. However, when you use the tech, it is damn impressive. No other automaker is currently making this level of autonomy accessible to do many people, despite it still being level 2 (which puts the onus on the driver to pay attention). I want him to get his ass off the moped, wipe the "FSD runs over children in school zone" bias from his mind, and just live with it. Perhaps only after then will he realize how capable it is and why you shouldn't feel unsafe as a motorcycle rider when riding in traffic with Teslas on the road.

Since there is a lot of speculation here on who the CT customer is I want to weigh in here as a CT reservation holder. But first, Great discussion and kudos to both Mike and Jason for getting this done with civility. I currently own a very early Tesla Model 3 (roughly 10,000 serial number) and a 2012 Ford F150 Ecoboost. As an outdoorsman and engineer, I’m both very motivated by the implications of climate change and qualified to evaluate impacts of human tech/behavior on it. My opinion, after much research on the topic is that a transition to BEV across vehicle fleets is a key component do reducing climate impacts of human travel. Improving the efficiency of autos by 10-30% with hybrids isn’t enough and models claiming the opposite make the fallacy that lithium and associated minerals are a bottleneck. The six years of driving my model three have been the most enjoyable and trouble free of any car I’ve ever owned. My motivation to drive nothing but BEVs and my experience with the Model 3 (one of three teslas we’ve owned as a family, all of which have been incredible) prompted me to reserve a CT on reveal day in 2019. To be clear, I don’t give a fuck what it looks like, I don’t care for or desire the attention it’s going to bring me, but the utility does matter: 1) my current F150 is scratched to shit after more than a decade of off-roading around brush. The stainless of the CT should eliminate this concern. 2) off-road capability on paper seems to either equal or exceed my F150 3) towing capacity is equivalent to my f150 4) payload capacity exceeds my F150 5) storage exceeds my f150 6) maneuverability exceeds my f150 7) maintenance: if my experience with other teslas is an indicator, maintenance costs should be much less than the $1000-$4000 I spend each year on my F150. Ignoring the notion that to some extent, form follows function, none of the above has anything to do with how the vehicle looks. While there are more players in this space today (rivian, ford, gm (hehe), etc…) that I will be evaluating at the time my reservation is open for the CT, my bias is towards Tesla for the following: 1) past experience with the brand has been overwhelmingly positive. 2) of the current offerings, Tesla has the best chance (IMO) of being around in 10-15years when I need service. 3) I’m not giving one more fucking penny to legacy automakers who, very profitably, sat on the sidelines of the clean energy transition while letting a startups lead the way. They’ve taken none of the risk and now they’re standing around with their hands out, failing to compete in a segment that was theirs for the taking. With regards to autopilot: I’ve used many of the competing products provided by other brands. None have performed as well as Tesla AP does on my 6yo Model 3. Yeah some idiots use it irresponsibly and the naming is lame, but the product should be judged on the data of its performance in aggregate.

This episode in a nutshell is "I agree with your facts, but my opinion..." That aside, I still give Matt credit for actually brought Jason to talk it out and to apologize right at the start. He could've just ignored it or just talk to Jason in private and never make this public, but here we are.

There isn’t one specific reason why I listen to any one automotive journalist. That being said, Jason presents more reasons than anyone else. Your last name should be Charisma. You are my generations Clarkson. Entertaining, informative, funny, not ashamed of your boyish sense of humor. More than anything though, your content never disappoints and always makes me happy. Just make sure when you get stale you buy a farm 😘

Jason's understanding of the crash test thing is still wrong in this video. The 10% is not the maximum they though was possible. 5 stars is for any car with 10% or less chance of injury. I don't think many car companies compute and publish their chance of injury under NHTSA conditions but based on that definition I'd have to assume plenty of cars fall in the same range as the Tesla mentioned.

The irrational "Elon Bad" goes beyond Tesla. It's because Elon bought Twitter and put an end to the censorship. It is political. Granted there are some diehard gear heads out there that hate all things Tesla simply because of the success Tesla is having and how bad legacy auto is struggling. Jason's review of the Cybertruck was IMHO the best review out there. And he admitted at the start of the review that he thought the CT was a joke. I know he got a ton a negative backlash beyond what he got from Matt. This is political, the attacks on Jason will continue, it will become more irrational. Eventually Jason's political views will change as well. What I described above will happen more & more across the land. Groupthink is bad, it has run it's course.

I think I’m the only one that was glad VW did what they did. Screw the government and their BS regulations. Anyone that had a VW diesel at that time knows how great they were. All manufacturers try to beat the system and they did. The really amusing thing is VW’s penalty in the US was to build a public EV charging network. That explains why it’s shit 😂

I like Matt, he's a good journalist, but Cammisa just taught a masterclass on being an exceptional journalist. Jason presents himself with a very silly persona, but I always knew there was utter brilliance underneath the fun exterior. How many people can claim to have a background with law, psychology and engineering, along with being fluent in German? His intelligence is clearly extremely understated and it's amazing that he is such a talented presenter as well. I honestly believe his is the best automotive journalist of all time, bar none.

Matt is constantly frustrated with his low view count on his review videos, meanwhile, Jason is absolutely crushing it. And this conversation shows exactly why that is happening. Matt is far too emotionally connected to things, and puts far too much of his personal bias into his reviews. It’s exhausting to watch. I used to be an avid viewer for years, but I’ve grown to trust him less and less as time goes on. Meanwhile, Jason is crushing every single thing he does.
