Today, when a movie franchise becomes a trilogy, there is always speculation about a fourth film going into production. Franchises like Fast & the Furious, Resident Evil, and Mission Impossible have all gone way past three movies, but it's a risky decision, especially if the third film wraps up the story well.
Back to the Future, The Dark Knight, and The Godfather are some of cinema’s greatest trilogies, and people have speculated about fourth films for all of them for years, but they have never happened. Let's take a look at why some famous trilogies never got a fourth movie.

'The Dark Knight' saga ended a movie too early. While I am glad that the greedy studio was humbled, I still want to see 'Ascendant' produced. I wish 'The Chronicles of Narnia' saga could be completed too. We could have had 'Spider-Man 4' and who knows what else if it were not for the power-hungry studio.

Trilogy: Opening, Struggle, Resolution. Only in Greedywood do they think that the end of a book series needs two movies to finish it and that Trilogies just need more movies put out. Are you waiting for the 4th movie in the Star Wars Original Trilogy? It was bad enough The Hobbit took a short story and turned it into a bunch of movies and somehow Twilight and Harry Potter needed two movies to tell the story of the last book. In short, its a trilogy. Stop trying to drag out movie stories because you want (us) to pay for more movie tickets.

There actually was a screenplay written for Godfather Part 4 centering on Vincent, who was named the new Godfather at the end of Godfather Part 3. However, it took too long just in the writing stage and Coppola wasn't interested.

Bane wasn't a bitch, he and Talia were working together to fulfill making Gotham out to be beyond saving and nearly succeeded where Ra's and The Joker didn't. Bane was a leader in his own right, like a general and she was a political figure. He cared about fulfilling his duty to The League of Shadows since they saved him, and he believes in their philosophies such as Gotham being corrupt due to finding Gordon's letter and working with John Daggett. Bane's death also made sense. It took a bat-pod cannon to kill him, pretty badass. Batman already had his rematch with Bane, where he used his training in The Pit and adrenaline rush/fear of death to fight smarter and defeat him. We were given the emotional closure with Bane and Talia needed, and she went off to ensure that the bomb goes off and floods the chambers to ensure that there's no way of saving Gotham; Batman was subdued, held at gunpoint. There's no need for another rematch where he rips off his mask and blows him up with grenades. Catwoman had no qualms about killing him and it contributes to her arc of selflessly saving Gotham City and redeeming herself. It perfectly ties in with Ra's al Ghul's quote "Death does not wait for you to be ready! Death is not considerate or fair!", which is somewhat of a running motif with the finality of death in the trilogy- Rachel's boss, Rachel being blown to smithereens, mob accountant Laou being burned alive, Two-Face being tackled off the ledge, Mayor Garcia being killed in the football stadium. Death isn't pretty and ceremonious in this series, and Bane, who along with Talia and The League are the greatest threat that Batman and his city ever faced, shouldn't be treated differently but it doesn't make him less of a character.

While not a film Back to the Future did get a 4th installment as a video game. Christopher Lloyd returned as Doc Brown. Michael J. Fox didn't return to play Marty but does cameo as his ancestor. The person they got to play Marty was so good that Lloyd at first thought it was Fox. The story deals with them going back to when Doc was a teenager. I actually quite enjoyed the story.

The Chronicle's of Narnia was an amazing set of books. I really hope someone will be able to do the whole series into movies. I really enjoyed both the BBC version and the Disney version. I just want to see all the books come to life.

0:58 I agree he didn't have an interest, I don't believe he told a complete story. Reasons for this? Well, the Bat spotlight is repaired and we see Robin find the Batcave. This suggests there was a possibility there would be a fourth movie. The setup for the next movie was there, he just decided not to do it. I could see Batman a few years later returning when the City needed him most. One final reason, I believe there would be a fourth movie, he states in his will, if you listen, that parts of the Estate were to remain with Alfred, meaning that Batcave and some other parts were to be there when it was needed. I just don't buy that he intended to finish it there, something else must have happened to make him not to do it. Back to the Future didn't get one because it closed the movie arch. Doc Brown says it best at end: " It means your future hasn't been written yet. No one's has. Your future is whatever you make it. So make it a good one, both of you." -Doc Brown This line is important if you think about it some about the movies.

I actually think Blake finding the Batcave should have lead to a spin-off Nightwing movie series. Nightwing could work, because he rides motorbikes, does martial arts, and is cooler than Robin. But the fact that they have rebooted all the movies for the DCU puts paid to any more Nolan-esk "Dark Knight" series films.

No. Nolan cared about TDKR; making it a definitive and epic conclusion to the series and don't be mistaken, the ending is not meant to direct to a sequel. It indicates what'll happen afterwards, letting viewers piece things together themselves and for their imaginations to run wild. The legend lives on. Bruce is not going to return as Batman since he barely made it out alive in TDKR, though he could most likely train John Blake in secret given coordinates that were left to lead to the batcave, and Alfred saw Bruce alive.

I loved the Chronicles of Narnia books growing up. When The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe came out I was stoked, but then immediately disappointed in what I saw. I waited for video for Prince Caspian but turned it off about 20 minutes in. It was a mercy that they canceled the series. Hopefully someone decides to do it right someday, books should be made into tv series' anyway. Much more time to do it justice.

I just wish the Night At The Museum series had ended with a better movie. The second one brought back all the historical characters from the first,but also introduced new ones. I mean,why was Sir Lancelot seemingly the only wax figure on display at the British museum? Where were the other characters from the Arthurian legend,like,uhh...oh,I dunno....THE GUY THE LEGEND'S *NAMED* FOR?! AND....it's the British Museum!!! Where's the wax figure of Winston Churchill? I loved those books as a kid. Bums me out that the movies weren't more successful and petered out halfway through the series. Hopefully Netflix will do something decent with the rights at some point.
