No airfields of any accomodating size that would have been worth flying from are found anywhere near Howland Island. The island was bombed in WWII, and was also an anchorage for float planes during the war. There was plenty of air activity around the island. There was no distress radio call indicating a ditch in the ocean. I would hope it's her plane but I doubt it. Plenty of aircraft crashed in that part of the Pacific. We'll see what happens. Good luck to the search crew.
@James-mz7tv
@James-mz7tv 7 ай бұрын
To power the radio adequately, the engine needed to be running normally, firstly. As her engines cut out due to being starved of fuel, it is likely that her radio would have been "chugging" as well, meaning turning off and on as the engines struggled in the moments before she lost the engines for good. It's also important to note that her engines cutting out would have likely sent a big flush of panic as the gravity of the coming moments became instantaneously realized. Her whole focus would have likely been diverted in muscling the stick and trying to land the aircraft safely on the surface of the ocean. Don't forget, Earhart was flying exceptionally low, 1,000 foot or below, meaning she had moments only after those engines sputtered out to try and get the plane down safely. Alternatively, she may have switched to a different frequency in a desperate attempt to be heard, and the Itasca simply did not receive the broadcast.

I don't believe the plane would be so intact after hitting the water. It is likely they bailed out before going down. It would be too risky to try an unpowered landing on water. Her navigator was reputed to be a drunk that other pilots would not fly with. He may have miscalculated their fuel consumption and mileage. Years ago a fishing boat pulled some wreckage including landing gear out of the water. They released it back into the deep after being told to do so by the authorities. I believe that is the more likely scenario.

Take into account damage suffered. Looks like the fuselage is broken and to the left. With it being so poor quality, there is interference in the return, so that'll come into play. With the apparent level being so deep, there's no telling how the airframe would be deformed. Any sort of compressed gas cylinders, if there were any, such as O2 might not have reacted so well with the depths.They'll get back out and get better cleaner images upon their return.

@@shondrawhite9317 If the plane crashed into water at a high rate of speed, basically crashing into concrete, there would have been nothing left of it, especially not the wings intact but just slightly bent back. If that is the plane, what would make the most sense to me is she had control and had to ditch on water. Then it wouldn't have been a steep angle and could possibly explain the swept back wing and the plane being somewhat intact and not totally destroyed.

It's likely her aircraft, and I say that because I'm going to assume that this team has information they're holding back and not disclosing, which appears to be the case if you listen very closely to the myriad interviews they've been doing. If indeed this image is all they've got, I still believe it's highly likely it's her aircraft. The wings would have endured some damage on its long journey to the bottom. That's a lot of drag pulling them upward toward the surface as the plane fell nose-first into the seabed. As the aircraft entered considerable depths, there would have almost certainly been implosive forces at work due to her having converted the majority of the Electra's 12-seat capacity cabin into a network of reserve and primary fuel tanks. The front-heavy electra would have sank rapidly, and considering that fact, would have been filled with air pockets of substantial size, which would have all imploded and caused significant damage. Plus, once the aircraft hit the seabed, an hydrologic-quake would have bore down, further damaging the aircraft. It's likely the plane received all sorts of damage, and if it is whole at all, it will be a testament to how well she dropped it onto the surf.

Yep. I'd say they KNOW what they've got. They probably have a lot more images that are even clearer. I mean, if you got that image, would you say, cool, let's go home and talk about it? No, you'd keep going over that spot, getting as many images and closer ones as you could. That would be for the purposes of presenting it to investors, recovery experts znd getting your legal house in order. 100% they know they've got it. Playing poker face right now.
