Very informative. Thanks a lot. I am changing out the front diff on a 2002 mercury mountaineer. Didn't understand how to remove front drive shaft till I watched this. It's the exact shaft. Thanks again.

i know this is an old video but it is as good now as 8 years ago. I just installed the drive shaft CV using this video.I have one comment. The fellow mentioned that the old bolts need to be used because the new ones are shorter than the old by about 1/4 of an inch. The reason is because the bearing has to be drawn into the metal cup. It is difficult to do that and I did not realize it was necessary until I went to tighten them. In fact I found it difficult to get all of the bolts to catch on the flange holes until I tapped the back of the cup and realized it was walking itself onto the bearing. Then when I tightened the bolts after they would catch it took about 30 turns to get to the point I could torque them. My suggestion is that when one is installing the bearing on the bench, take and install all the bolts along with the spanner plates, Then find 8 nuts for the bolts and use washers and draw the bearing into the cup. By carefully tightening the nuts equally you will pull the bearing into the cup and it is preferable to do it on the bench rather than under the car. Good Luck.

Thanks very much for the video. Wifes 05 Sport Trac has been making a rattling noise since the fall. Forward drive shaft had a lot of play and then I found the boot was all torn. I have never pulled a drive shaft before, but put the truck up on the front ramps, followed your video and had the new CV back in under two hours. I didn't have the clamp tool and couldn't get it tight enough using needlenose and so I used a worm clamp. No vibrations or balance issues so I am happy.

Thanks for this video. A local shop wanted to charge me $275 to do this for me. That was with me taking the shaft off and installing it. I had to buy a couple tools but when it was all said and done it was about $80. It was not as hard as I thought it would be and it fixed the vibration/noise.

Also: For other people doing this job: In this video, The CV joint was only lubricated from ONE side... (after putting retainer clip on, at time marker 7:40 to 8:05 ... and extra grease wiped off at 8:52 ) It would be better to grease BOTH sides of bearing, and use half grease on back side (facing rubber boot) before installing on shaft, and then use 2nd half of grease as shown in this video, to keep joint well lubricated. Plus, if working on front section of drive shaft also... When you have the drive-shaft OFF during job, it's good to replace the rear "tail seal" on your transmission, while you have things apart: (only about $14 part) This is the round piece of rubber at the rear/tail of your transmission, which the front slide-yolk of your drive shaft slides into while it is going onto the metal shaft from the transmission. Replacing this when you have a chance (or every 90K miles) can prevent one of the more common types of transmission fluid leak. You may also consider replacing transmission oil filter, while working under there.

It’s off the transfer case. They’re bolted on the front diff and the rear. It’s not a slide yoke you slip out to remove the seal.

Thanks. Very similar to how it's done on my 2002 Dodge Dakota. But the one I got for my Dakota had a gasket that went in the cover before the bearing assembly. It also had some small external weights that went on with the cover bolts.

Lubrication could have been better. That is not how you pack bearings with grease. Also, lubricating the boot makes it slide easier instead of risking tearing the boot with a screwdriver.

It is so disappointing to find aftermarket and often OEM parts with that Made in China sticker. "Manufacturers" boost profits by using minimal or substandard materials and labor, plus the part's inevitable replacement in a short period of time ensures repeat business. Chinese-labeled parts used in critical safety areas like brakes, steering and suspension scare me! But what can you do if there are no better quality alternatives?

A dude,your a skilled mechanic that does the job right..enough bragging about you lol,can u show me how to change out my front differential in my 95 explorer..I been keeping the parts store in business with the junk I got off of Craig's list.under research I found out the most common this to go bad on my truck is the intake air control valve ( I already know how to fix) and the front differential gos bad..I been hearing a noise that sounds like a ole world war fighter plane then I thought was the wheel bearing but when I changed the upper ball joint on the drivers side the sound went away,that is unless I steer to the left or hit a bump..the noise with the shuttering vibration while driving with my research lead me to check the front differential.I found a leak right where the cv axle gos in,but I think it took me to long to find the problem to fix the differential I have so I'm going to put down the money to get a new one..I like doing research before I do anything.I'm sure I could replace it with out any help but I'd rather get the full grasp on what I'm getting into for time management and so I have all the right tools.could you make a video please
@evilassaultweaponeer9 жыл бұрын
Are you talking about swapping the bearings in your diff? If so, it's in no way a small job. It's doable, but it requires setting precise tolerances and potentially multiple iterations of the same work to get it right. You'll also need tools the average home mechanic doesn't own. If your noise occurs only on left turns and bumps it's probably not the differential anyway. Did you check your CV joints? CV axle shafts are generally pretty cheap (> $60) and easy to swap out. You might want to try that first.

Calling him a fool is inappropriate. If you watched the video, the replacement bolts were the wrong size. Is that the quality we ought to accept? I'll bet the FoMoCo part isn't made in China, and with just a little looking one can usually find parts made in the USA. Dorman is well known for providing cheapie China made parts. Say what you like, but not all parts are made in China, nor will I buy them if I have a choice.
@Galgamoth6 жыл бұрын
fomoco does not sell the part. you either buy a whole new driveshaft or you buy this kit
