You ever think about how a 1950's pulp comic series about a Native American fighting dinosaurs became a 1990's videogame franchise? Like what a trajectory.

Well that happens when a videogame company buys the comic book company. ^^

Turok Evolution may not be fondly regarded, but it is the game that forced me to learn how to play FPS games with dual analog controls, since the sticks could not be remapped. For that, I will forever be grateful.

Here in Italy, the N64 wasn't as big as the PlayStation, so in my youth I wasn't even aware of the console. When I was exposed to it for the first time as a teen, Turok was one of the first games I saw on it. Got to play Turok 2 on PC recently. Was having a blast for the first three levels and then the Lair of the Blind Ones happened and it kinda ruined everything for me but man, up until that point the game was amazing.

I vividly remember playing Turok Evolution as a kid and being too terrified of the dinosaurs to ever play past the first level lol The intro cutscene thing where the tomahawk splats the head of the lizard guy was also the goriest thing I had ever seen at a 6 year old. I remember having nightmares about it. Good times!

If I recall correctly, Joshua was actually an unlockable character in the original N64 version. Except the unlock conditions were rather difficult. I think you had to finish the game with both characters back to back on a higher or even the highest difficulty and never dying once. Yeah, good luck with that.
@PNDKM14 күн бұрын
I couldn't see anything online about it but perhaps I didn't look hard enough. The raptor is new though im fairly sure?
@blackm4niac14 күн бұрын
@@PNDKM The Raptor is new, at least I never heard about him being unlockable. It's a bit difficult to confirm the Joshua thing given that every walkthrough page lumps the original and the remaster together, so it's hard to tell if that information was added with the remaster or has always been there. But I'm fairly ceratin Joshua had always been in the game as a secret character.

I played so much Turok Rage Wars in my childhood. My cart was the original black N64 cart, and it was a bummer when my buddies and I learned it was impossible to complete in coop due to a bug with that copy. It was out for too long to recall, so they just shipped normal grey carts in waves after the initial release. Still have to get a copy of that one. It wasn’t just a PAL issue as mine was NTSC, but I don’t even think we could get to Tal Set. We could do some trials here and there, but sometime after Syra and Warclubs in a Frag Tag match is where the issue occurred. No matter how many times we won, we always failed.

I always loved how the cerebral bore didn’t work on the Pur-Lins. I guess their heads were too thick but child me always thought they had brains too small and smooth to drill. Maybe it’s a bit of both. Just little attention to detail moments like that really made that game special to me

Also what was strange with the 2008 Turok was the inconsistancy with violence. Like in the video shown Dinos get turned into gibblets but the human characters just get some slight partical effecta when there hit.

I just finished the Turok 3 remaster and they really nailed the visuals for that one. A Rage Wars remake (instead of remaster) would be amazing for Nightdive, especially if they added more characters/skins and perhaps even fixed up some of the map layouts. I have no doubt that Nightdive Studios would bring something special to the table if they worked on that.

Turok Evolution on the GBA was one of my favorites for that console. I'm glad that this video gives it the recognition it truly deserves. That being said I think Rage wars deserves to be re-released. I think with the amount of people into retro nowadays I think it would flourish especially with a modding community. Seeing Saber in the new game with other potential Turok makes me ask questions because as a comic book fan as well because like Ketchup said in the video Turok is a Mantle Passed by the Saquin Tribe from generation to generation.

I remember how shocked I was when I first saw Turok Dinosaur Hunter. I went from playing DOOM on the SNES to seing Goldeneye and Dinosaur Hunter in a few days time and it blew my mind. My overall take for each game: - Dinosaur Hunter is defintely the 2nd best and still an awesome shooter that stands the test of time. - Seeds of Evil is easily the best one and were the series peaked. To this day, alongside Perfect Dark, I consider it one of the more technically impressive FPS games ever, even when compared to many modern ones. - Rage Wars is just a fun time and I love that they included a Trails mode and not just simply multiplayer matches. - Shadow of Oblivion took steps forward in the technical aspects, but steps backwards in the design aspects. I still have a soft spot for it because it's gameplay basis are solid and it have a excelent pacing. - Evolution was very dissapointing. I did played it a lot, even though deep down I knew it was bad, because I was coping as a Turok fan. It have a few highlights but not enough to safe it. - 2008 is one part dissapointing because it's not really a Turok game but still a pretty fun and solid shooter that I did enjoy. And it had some very cool gameplay ideas such as the knife kills. As for the new Turok Origins; admitedly my reaction was one of anger at first because I was hoping for a DOOM (2016)-like game for Turok. But after some thinking I calmed down a little bit. I am still not sold on the game yet and I hope that newer information can convince me that it's gonna be a worthy follow up to the N64 trilogy. My biggest issues is it being in 3rd person and a co-op experience, which screams to me as trend chasing. But it has the cyborg dinosaurs and aliens involved, I do dig the new Turok biosuits, and the enviroments so far look pretty neat. I hope that Saber prove my doubts wrong eventually, because I do want a new Turok game that is at least good.

Fun fact about Rage Wars: with that bug at the end of the game, Acclaim was aware of the issue. So for that reason, anyone that wrote a complaint letter or something to the company, I think if you mailed your copy of Rage Wars to them, they send you a replacement in the normal grey cartridge but with the bug fixed. Something I wish you mentioned in the 2007 game was the stealth and interactive elements. You could shoot a flare towards the enemies to draw raptors towards them which was really neat back in 2007. The enemy AI logic was really good too from what I remember they'd try to flank you, smoke you out of cover with grenades, and the tall grass let you play silently with just knife and bow kills if you wanted. I really liked 2007 as a game but yeah I agree it wasn't Turok.

Turok 08 suffered because it didn't have extra media to draw from. Around 2008, Dinesh and his friends were attempting to gather the rights to the comics but Jim Shooter found a higher bidder. Shooter pocketed the money and screwed over the then budding Rebirth of Valiant comics. Dynamite comics, the current rights holder, has no interest in reprinting the old books and some of the Gold Key characters are now owned by a new company. This further ties up any republishing of the Acclaim era stories.

Turok 3 is definitely structured and paced differently than Turok 1 & 2, but even 2 felt like an incremental deviation in some ways, and 3 is way good for what it is - a very Half Life esque game - especially for it's time.
