The Ao Oni amino has some info on Ao Oni X. Its actually pretty cool with it having you have a chance of saving Hiroshi's friends, its much more open too! If you ever saw Ao Oni 3 it seems like ao oni x is a mix between 3 and something unique. Its much more manga friendly with a couple of characters that are from the manga alone. Theres more locations too. Thats all i can say since thats all i recall from all those years ago

That’s probably cuz a lot of RPG horror games or RPG story games were played by popular lets players but they never bothered to continue with the series or didn’t know to do so. Either they moved on to more traditional 3D horror or the next game was different from the OG. So stuff like To the Moon’s sequel, Corpse Party’s sequel, or Crooked Man’s sequel were untouched. Only channels dedicated to playing a diverse range of horror, indie games, etc. played the sequels, or any subsequent horror RPG games like Zeno, End Roll, or Omori. And it’s not helped by the fact the ppl who used to translate these games (Memories of Fear? and VGperson) don’t really translate games anymore.

Wait 'til what I got to say to you. There was a fan game called Heta Oni, which was a fan collaboration of Hetalia and Ao Oni. It changed the game into a turn based fighter like Earthbound and you got to follow all the main characters of Hetalia, however the main focus was Italy. It's still not finished, since the creator of this AU/game made it increasingly long. But it's pretty cool!

Okay so, after watching this video, I do want to say something. This actually could have been good. If this was made in RPG maker, even without changing the puzzles, it could have been at least competent. Hell, even better if everything was translated properly with some extra dialogue hinting at what to do with what. The graphics look pretty good, and if you want to keep the idea of different Oni skins, just change the function of the safes from coins to a "mysterious orb that changes the Oni's form" or something like that. I already have a small list of ideas in mind of what people could do without completely overhauling the game if this were to be competent.

One of the main problems of this game is the entirety of the level and puzzle designs. Sure, it could "be good" if you completely changed everything and made it something else that was better. I think the core of the game is bad. Not to mention the Oni itself is only prevalent through random encounters with the exception of like 1-2 scripted chases.

But the terrible translation plus the horrible design of the puzzles just completely wrecks it. Ben himself said that the game could be just that the game itself was good, but the devs just needed ads for money. But if you just fix up the translations and controls in RPG maker without changing the puzzles themselves, all you're left with is something that can be "Competent" at best. Not good, but playable.

Actually in the traveler playthrough, you're supposed to use the "small key" knife on the iv bag in the first room to find an actual small key, which opens the locked door below the room you got the "small key" in. That room includes a jumpscare that actually got me, and an item under a bed (that you move from the side of said bad), and then immediately a lil cut scene of the oni showing up behind you followed by a chase i wasn't able to get past :') there might be more though, who knows

While it is nice to see more people giving this the attention and criticism it deserves, I still feel like you have given it more credit then it deserves. I played this game a fair bit within the few months after it came out due to the fact that it had a speed run mode that I got fairly invested in trying to get as fast a time as possible. And, many of the issues that you noted or touched upon get so much worse when you try that 100% intentional way of playing it that is outright encouraged by the game. The controls will often require you to hold it for a bit before allowing you to change directions or stop making it so that the controls aren't just clunky but actively slow you down or get you killed, a lot of the puzzles are supposed to be randomized but not all of them are randomized in one play through so if you wanted to speed run (Which I need to repeat is something that the game actively wanted you to do) you would have to guess what parts have been randomized and which parts haven't which was never the same. Furthermore, a number of scripted chases not just do not consistently work, they also sometimes can trigger multiple times in one play through. And to make matters worse, it's generally preferable for their to be scripted chases triggering muliple times then them not triggering at all because theirs a timer that prevents AO Oni chases for a bit afteryou get one, and scripted chases at the very least will not spawn on top of you and will dissapear relatively quickly. Which brings us to another issue, the fact that unscripted chases can last upwards of ten minutes if you get unlucky. Basically the way that they work (And I am fairly certain this is also what caused the computers to reset.) is that whenever you enter a door there is a chance that a chase will end and that other elements can reset such as the tables where you catch the mouse but these chances aren't all tied together, and they can overlap which can prevent one of the others from happening. So what can happen in game is that you have an Ao Oni spawn and then run away from it (Just entering a door multiple times is the most efficient way) and then the chase will not end because the random chance to end the chase never occurs, or it get's replaced with a different reset. On top of all that, the ads that you would get during the game actually slow the game down some, and the more ads you see the slower the game will get. So whenever you die or save you're making the game ever so slightly less playable. Attempting to speedrun it was suprisingly fun though.

Granted, I don't think it's an official title, but from what I've seen, it does a lot to improve on the original game to the point it feels like a completely new version/sequel. I'd totally recommend covering it in another video if you're willing to cover fan-made content. Otherwise though, it's a shame that in terms of "official" sequels we got, this was the result.

It's fan made, yes! The whole thing is essentially a remake with new character designs and a new plotline. The individual characters can also all survive to the end. That is, if you make the correct choices! As well, there's multiple difficulty options added as a bonus.

Hi, veteran Ao Oni fan here who has dived head first into all corners of this series and who's favorite game is actually Ao Oni 2, I want to clarify a bit more about the other games that you skimmed through, as well as explain a little more about Ao Oni 2 and some of its criticism Ao Oni 2's main story was their first attempt at a Ao Oni-styled gameplay, which is why it can be seen as a little confusing, they were still trying to take their grounds on this style and they would later get much better at working with this style. Even so, I still like how creativity the later puzzles are, some are genuinely on-par with 6.23 in quality However, Ao Oni 2's scenario is what I'd say are the best parts of it, which can be easily unlocked by changing your language to japanese, which being in japanese doesn't change much since the game's dialogue isn't really anything major and you can tell the story from the gameplay alone, which, Ao Oni 2 genuinely has a fleshed out story hidden within its extra scenarios! This is mainly what puts it above 6.23 for me, since 6.23 had literally nothing on story I've always seen people complain about the ads and the gacha mechanics, but they really don't matter? At worst, there's that pop-up ad that shows up when you open the menu- which can be closed immediately, it's easy to ignore. The gacha mechanics are completely optional, and do not require microtransactions at all, there's no way to buy Blue Coins with real money, and none of the skins change the gameplay at all, they're all just design changes, and you aren't required to have them at all, it genuinely is not a problem and so much people really insist in it being a problem for whatever reason?? Not much to say about the portrait mode, I've grown completely used to it, maybe Ig it's a little annoying in a first playthrough??? But you'd get used to it With all that said, please do not give up on more about this series, all issues that might've been in Ao Oni 2 are fixed in later sequels Talking about the rest of them, Ao Oni 3 takes place in a mysterious island erased from history after the ship Hiroshi and his friends were in crashes, the game is especially interesting because they experiment with a lot of things in this game, such as directly interacting with items from the menus, character switching, a map that takes the player to multiple regions of the island, and even special chases and bosses, it has a lot to offer! The game is super experimental and nothing alike Ao Oni 2 where they were still playing a little safe, they really went ballin' with this one. Although, be warned, that there's been a bug in the game for a while that softlocks you in a part of the game, you'd need to likely find a APK of an older version to make it work Gachikowa is a difficult game to describe, since it heavily relies on dialogue due to the nature as a chat game, it was also uniquely not developed by the usual developers of the Ao Oni mobile games, putting it in a unique spot. If you have a auto-translator at hand, then maybe it could be a fun experience since it still relies on puzzles, but probably a lot more difficult thing to experience Ao Oni Online is a 100 players battle royale where the players are placed in a map and have to surprise as Ao Onis are deployed into the map, with the last person standing winning, although it also has a lot of other game modes and events that appear from time to time to spice up the replayability. It is overall a much more sillier experience that shouldn't be taken too seriously (Because I know people who seriously do...), it's fun if you're feeling it, although the game breaks if you try and play it in a non-existent english server, so I think it'd require a VPN of some kind to make it work Finally, Ao Oni X is the last Ao Oni game released to date, and it is equally as experimental as Ao Oni 3, with its main focus being on branching paths and choices, which allows you to save or kill any of our friends, which is something in EVERY scenario featured in the game, although it also suffers from the same problem as Ao Oni Online which makes the game broken to us, and likely required a VPN to fix This should be all I wanted to explain, I want to make sure there's as much clarity as possible about these games, since information is usually scarce to the english-speaking side of the fanbase

For those who want to get into a certain mood when playing a game, the ads would be impossible to ignore. Even if they were to look away. It rips them away from what they call "immersion", or it "interrupts the pace" of the game, even if its a second, just having to pause and wait, feels like mini whiplash. For the length of the game, may be to many for some.

@@xXSamir44Xx This game was their first attempt at a Ao Oni-styled game, which they got far better at as time went on, it was a bit clumsy on some areas but there IS genuine effort put onto it which you can see on the improvements made for the extra scenarios and later sequels This is judging a game by its cover, the team was clearly willing to make the game the best it could, and even if they struggled to do for the first time, they improved a lot and that's something that I think needs to be noted I have played everything there is to be played on these games, I think these are worthy successors to Ao Oni and I really hate this weird "This must be a cashgrab" mentality, but if it was, they wouldn't even try

This is weird, because when I played Ao Oni LOOOOONG AGO, my friend who was super into it, had me also play a sequel, that continued Hiroshi's story, where the Onis escaped, and were now haunting him on the outside, as he tried to move on from what happened, and continue a regular school life

You can totally brute force your way through the 3rd game with some assistance from online walkthroughs at times. I did it. Seems like every game resets the timeline. The final chase of that one was definitely not what I was expecting. Also your game specifically seems to be off. My phone's pretty old now so it might be a compatability thing. I was able to do a good amount of the gachas. They do get pretty wild. My favorite is the giant spider that exceeds the oni's normal sprite size.
