In Indonesia the spoon is supposed to act like a knife while you hold the meat with the fork. The reason behind this is that we don't have many big chewy food like steak where you have to really use a knife for it. If we do have to eat something chewy in our food it's usually already pre cut into bite sized pieces where the knife would be then unecessary to use. For more complicated foods like crabs we just wash our hands thoroughly first and use them instead. This is how i as an Indonesian would understand it. Have fun exploring Indonesia!

Thanks for showing me the parts of Jakarta that I've never seen. Menteng and Tanah Abang are the financial high-rise capital of Indonesia and so unlike the rest of the country. In the center of big cities like Bandung or Jogjakarta the tallest buildings are a dozen stories and there are just a handful of those. You are always going to be noticed and stared at in Indonesia but don't take it for unfriendliness. Everywhere I went people asked personal questions and, of course, everyone wanted to get a selfie with me. The spoon and fork thing is also common in other parts of SE Asia. Your meal had a lot of protein: fried egg and bakso and chicken. Much more common would rice and vegies and one type of meat.

Parman Avenue with 1,5 kms square, PIK 1/2 CBD at North Jakarta and Tangerang-Banten Surabaya has more skyscrapers but not as many as Jakarta also Medan, Batam,Balikpapan and Makassara well, Bandung and Yogyakarta can not have many bcoz both city have tectonic and vulcanic earthquake potentials I believe, CMIIWW

I can tell you're being very respectful toward us and i really appreciate that 🙏. Anyway, you can always ask for a knife in any restaurant that you visit. It's just not a common costum using knife here but you can always ask for a knife in wherever place you go

Here some tips : 1. i suggest you learn basic word/conversation in indonesian language, and you can ask people to help you here. 2. always prepare yourself with tissue, because not all public toilet have them. 3. always ask/tell your spicyness level of your food before you order on low-mid restaurant / street food. because mostly of them normaly serve food with spicy. 4. about dress, we consider long pants was formal dress for public routine and indonesian woman aware about sun tan, they dont like skin being tanned. 5. some people will ask you for photo/selfie, it just normal, they want to be friendly with you. 6. some people will ask you for name, where you came from, your age, married or not, your job etc, sound like intrograting, don't be blame them, its normal here, they using that topic just for chitchat, they want to start friendly talk from that topic, although they will forget it later. hahaha :D 7. about people staring you, yes you are right, more remote area more are starring you, dont be insult by them, it just because they stunning by your beauty. just stay chill. :D i hope you enjoying your travel in indonesia, take more time to explore every place you have to visit, and again indonesia is full of surprice experience (in positif way), ^_^

Hi welcome to Jakarta, hope you will enjoy your stay here. Jakarta is not really a tourist destination city compared to other city in Southeast Asia like Bangkok for examples. So you won't see much tourist around and things can feel bit out of place and confusing sometimes because lack of information of what to see and how to get there. But local government are fixing it I'm sure, improving the area and rebranding it with the hope it could become more hospitable or tourist friendly. Compared to few years ago, Jakarta is actually a nicer place now specially in the downtown area. If you have enough time you could visit a beautiful thousand islands not far away from Jakarta's shore. A nice beach retreat before you going to Bali or other area. Regarding avocado Juice, most Indonesian only know Avocado as fruit that used in juices and dessert, compared to western world specially US or Canada who are get used with avocado in savory dish due to Mexican's cuisine influence like Guacamole. So just like how you surprised finding Avocado in the sweeter side, my mother also have the same reaction when I introduced her to savory dish using avocado. A real cultural exchange 😃.

Hi SpellOnYou, but the lack of tourists compared to Bangkok can actually be a good thing in one way as you get a more authentic feel for the host country. 2019 pre-pandemic ASEAN visitors. Indonesia and Philippines need help to bring up their visitor levels. Thailand - 39.80 million. Malaysia - 20.1 million. Vietnam - 18 million. Singapore - 15.9 million. Indonesia - 13.62 million. Philippines - 8 million. Cambodia - 6.7 million. Myanmar - 4.3 million.

17:52 Spoon is typically used for any type of rice dishes, it's the common way of eating. Even with fried chicken, people will normally use either fork + spoon or their hands to rip the flesh.. or both in conjunction. You'd be surprised to learn this but this is the normal custom for Indonesian here (as an Indonesian myself). I believe the eating culture of using spoon + fork was brought by the Dutch. Also, I think many modern restaurants might serve knives but try ask for one next time you visit another restaurant. Chance is small if you go to local restaurant instead ("rumah makan", "warung" etc.).

Hope you are well Alina. Harriet and I have been to Jakarta to visit my brother . Some of the places you went to we've been to such as the Moja Art Gallery and into the Financial District and Old town Dutch town Historic District. My brother lives just outside of Jakarta in a District called The Golden Triangle. We enjoyed the food and drink there. Incidentally , most Indonesians eat with their hands at home. But at a restaurant they will use utensils with no knives. Much of the food eaten is considered finger food. No knive necessary. Harriet and I think the reason you don't see as many tourists there is Bali is the big draw and some of the strict protocols the west feels uncomfortable with. We didn't mind it at all. Alina, Have a Wonderful Time there. Feel Better, Be Well, and most of all Stay Safe. Sending you lots of love💖💖💖 Harriet and Jim. Richmond, Va. .

That elevated tunnel going across the street that was in the form of square frames arranged as a spiral was interesting. You may have to visit the caves Japanese hid in and the one where they found Java Man! I think Java Man was the missing link between Australopithecus and the Neanderthal or something. And I am pretty sure there was some intense WW2 action in Indonesia, the Battle of the Java Sea was just off the coast. In recent times there have been problems with diving scrappers looting the US, Australian, and Dutch ships sunk there, they are protected as war graves, but the bronze propellers off USS Houston disappeared along with an entire Dutch ship Awesome video, Alina! 👍😊🇨🇦🇺🇸

I lived in Indonesia (Jakarta) from 1992 to 1995. It was a much more liberal country then. I loved the friendly people and the beautiful country. I've been all over Java, Bali and also went to Kalimantan. You are correct that if you want to experience the "real" Indonesia you have to goto places outside Bali. While Bali is great and beautiful it has a totally different vibe than the rest of Indonesia - one of the main reasons for this is that the predominant religion in Bali is Hinduism. My favorite dish was Tumis Daging, not your kind of food - its meat. I would suggest you try Nasi Padang, it is rice (Nasi) with lots of small dishes of different food. They keep refilling the dishes and you typically pay for what you eat. Be sure to goto a busy restaurant so you know they make it fresh every day. Traditional Indonesian food is eaten by using your right hand with or w/o utensils. Spoons are used for eating Soto (soup) or cutting instead of a knife. Good luck with you exploration of Indonesia.
@rynaldycavdra82362 жыл бұрын
Plz don't called liberal, not many people like that here. Just called little bit freedom.

@IndonesiatanpaAsuwaja2 жыл бұрын
I agree more liberal and crazy
@saltyliquorice71572 жыл бұрын
@@rynaldycavdra8236 I just write it as I see it. I do not want to start any discussion about religion or politics as everyone are entitled to their own opinions - my point was that it seems Indonesia has gone to a more restrictive / traditional interpretation of Islam. During my time in your country, it was the exception to see woman and children with their head covert - this date this seems to be reverse. We also all know about the attack on the Indonesia Chinese in 1998 and the Bali bombings in 2002 and 2005 which to me shows that the country has become more radical in its view.
@saltyliquorice71572 жыл бұрын
I was not trying to say that individuals are still not liberal, but from what I have observed the country seems to have become more radical. I explained my reasoning in a reply to Rynaldy Cavdra take a look at that please and see if it makes sense. I do also not mean that the previous additional freedom was only a good thing. I saw especially females being exploited and drunkenness which was the other side of the coin.

(also if you’re right handed, spoon is on the right, fork is to help you pushing the food to the spoon). 2) Locals staring: yup indeed, we’re still lacking foreign tourists (especially in non-downtown/ central Jakarta area). But the locals are suuuper kind! Don’t hesitate to ask for help or say hello to them. Google translate might help breaking the barrier as well :) Enjoy the rest of your stay! Thank you for visiting Indonesia and for this very well made video! I am Chinese Indonesian who has not been to Jakarta for the longest time. The last time I went home and walked around a lot, I was also stared on. So yes, being a non- Indonesian will attract more attention,but also the fact that you walk around is also not something most people would do. And you’re spot on, what you wear also matter. Aside from religion and being conservative aside, Indonesians wear more layers/ non skimpy clothes also due to how we try our best not to get tanned from the harsh equatorial sun in Indonesia. Look forward to watch more of your contents!

Amazing tour of Jakarta! I've always been intrigued to know more about this city ever since a friend from school moved there in early 2000's. Truly the most insightful video I've ever seen of this beautiful city ✨️🇮🇩 Ps: MOJA Museum looks so much fun! Definitely the highlight of the video for me 😁

Good to know that you like Jakarta, I appreciate how you started your vid with the historical background of Jakarta, and you have already visited those main landmarks, try also MRT one day, it is now expanded to the north until the old town, currently under construction. What you ate in Bakso Lapangan Tembak (my favorite eating place) was fried rice, famous Indonesian dish, and those in the avocado juice is brown sugar, not chocolate, We rarely use knife, only spoon and fork because we rarely eat meat😅 just kidding, but this is our normal daily practice, we sometimes just use our fingers!. Look forward to your next video exploring more about Jakarta.. safe travel and keep healthy.

@@deddygiririndjani635 Thanks so much for the info. My wife and I will only be in Indonesia (mainly Jakarta) for about 6nights. It seems a long way, so we might just have to try and get to Bandung instead.

We are moving our capital away from Jakarta to Borneo Island. You are seeing the last year's of Jakarta being the national Capital. Welcome to Indonesia, please visit Labuan Bajo as well if you plan to visit Bali 🙏🇮🇩 @8:40 don't feel bad about what you're wearing, you're totally fine 👍

If you have time, you should consider to visit the city Bandung! It's a 3 hour train ride from Jakarta, but it is higher up in the mountain so it's cooler. From there you can visit "Tangkuban Perahu", a volcanic crater that you can actually get close to (and even boil an egg in the hot water!). The city itself has a vibrant, young atmosphere (stay at or close to Jalan Braga, where lots of the cool cafes are located). Good luck!

Not really cooler weather. It can be damn hot in the day even in the higher part. But if it rains a lot it can be quite bad if you are a tourist. Also that crater smells awful with the sulphur.

I kind not agree that she have to visit tangkuban perahu or kawah putih she will cost at least 90-110 usd to both of place which is not small money for foreign tourist, and i don't like the local goverment about the price to become high for tourism, so not recommend if she just travel alone to tangkubang perahu or kawah putih better she just chillin in villa in area hills like dago in bandung rather she visit tangkuban perahu or kawah putih

hi alina.. just to correct you on the name of the area that you mentioned at 2:57, it's not menteng, it's thamrin area named after the name of the street itself - menteng is located a few blocks away from thamrin.. if you were to get on a taxi and asked to be driven to menteng i guarantee you you will not be driven to that place again..🙂 and if you are interested to stay back again in jakarta near the scbd area, the one nice and quite affordable - yet at the same time clean and cool hotels to stay at would be the harris hotel located on top of the fx mall, from there you can go to scbd and senayan sports area within walking distance..
