Experiments with D-Class individuals have invariably proven fruitless. However research using a coyote chasing a roadrunner led to a brief period of levitation before the coyote looked down.
@-KiTToBuG2 жыл бұрын
Ah, so you're familiar with the Warner experiments. The instance with the rabbit and the hunter was particularly fascinating, as the hunter acted identically to the coyote. Whereas the rabbit seemed to be in full control of his personal gravitational interaction regardless of his situational awareness or proprioception. Perhaps this "Bugs Bunny" originates from a higher dimension (pure conjecture).

@@-KiTToBuG Come on man if you're going to comment about anything SCP like, even as a joke, then it at least has to make sense. 'Gravitational interaction regardless of situational awareness and proprioception' is just nonsensical. @@jameswalsh1452 You might want to look up "special proprioception". Our muscles and other tissues contain pressure receptors that, networked together, provide "which way is up" information independent of the otolith based sensors in our inner ears. If those two systems disagree with each other and/or with the semicircular canals in our inner ears we become dizzy or otherwise disoriented. The systems and their interconnections, and how their signals are processed in the brain, vary slightly in different species and classes, for instance between mammals and avians. Yet, the Warner experiments demonstrated similar results when a duck was substituted for one of the mammals in the human/rabbit trials.

This is similar to The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. In that book series, you can fly by "missing the ground". This is achieved by forgetting you are falling after you notice you are falling, which makes all the momentum and gravity effects be neutralized, and from that point on you can fly freely like a bird.

I got a different vibe from this. My interpretation here is that this is a cognitohazard / anomalous meme, which somehow spreads through Rainbows "teachings" and "exams". The more you listen / watch, the more it affects you. The effect of the cognitohazard is believing in this reduction of gravity effect more and more, until you want to try it yourself. Note how the effect gets stronger every time, and the researcher ends up watching the original video over and over a lot of times before even making contact. Maybe the strength of the effect also correlates with how close you are to the person you see jumping, idk. The people don't ACTUALLY float or fall slower at all, that's just the cognitohazard affecting you when watching. This is shown by the old lady dying - a fall slowed by that much would likely not end up lethal, unless somehow momentum is still preserved. We also see the characters getting more and more convinced by Rainbows ideas the more they're exposed to them, which even more fits a cognitohazardous effect rather than belief actually warping gravity.

This is such a beautiful analogy to religions -- they absolutely work as what they were meant for, but you have to believe, and you can't stop, even if you know that you are very likely being deceived. The value of magic is in people believing in them, even if magic can not be proofed to be real. The leap of faith is illogical, dangerous, and you can be denied when you start doubting even if you have reached the other side, but they do work like their intended purposes on the minds of the crowd, even if they do not stand under scientific methods.

I'm thinking of adapting this for the DnD campaign I DM. Specifically, Rainbow will either be the avatar of some form of celestial/outsider that's feeding from the belief generated by the leaps or he'll be the chosen thrall/prophet of that celestial. Either way, a passing grade at the 'final exam' means the victim has successfully leaped into a pocket dimension (by way of belief) where said celestial tries to encourage the victim's delusions for as long as possible in order to feed on them, but always ultimately fails and the subjects fall to their deaths. It will be interesting to see what my player does with this setup, given it's the victims choice to leap (at least to a large extent) and they die with a fulfilled expression on their faces. Plus, I'm using this in the context of a rather bleak and war-torn world and, thus, a desire for escapism is somewhat understandable.

@@lholliday198 Thank you. Many SCPs lend themselves to being integrated into DnD campaigns, if the setting is flexible enough, and this one struck me as rather easy to implement, since all it really needs is some sort of human society, a few cliffs, pocket dimensions being a thing, and the ability to insert amoral celestials into the campaign. Especially if dimension-hopping and time-travel are on the table, all sorts of medieval cults, ancient secret orders, and lovecraftian horrors best left forgotten could be integrated into a DnD campaign.

Kind of reminds me of the Pickup Artist Manual SCP. Forget the number but it kind of seems similar to this where some sort of self help manipulates peoples minds for some reason despite it being nonsensical

God! Yeah! That one was creepy AF! With the wax statuettes jumping into the women and the way it ends, it's awesome horror stuff!

Anyone remember Coyote Bongwater from Destroy All Humans 2? That's who I'm picturing when Rainbow is talking.

Why, yes, but I didn't parallel it with this. Man, I hope the nearing Reprobed release of the game is really good.

@@michaelandreipalon359 Oh yeah personality wise they're very different, just got similar vibes mean. I really liked the first remake so I'm optimistic, hopefully if they remake 3 they can make new ones after.

Ohhh, this was good and also genuinely creepy, I love it! I honestly don't think there's anything anomalous about Rainbow or an memetic weirdness regarding what he says. This felt like commentary on new age mysticism, if you've ever heard Deepak Chopra speak, I got that feeling from this. Imagine a more detailed transcript of some of Rainbow's speeches/sermons, replace "good airwaves" with "good energy" and you have Deepak Chopra, who claims that if you're ya know, in tune with the universe you can cure all disease and even halt or greatly slow the aging process and people fall for that BS by the 100s of thousands, this is that, just taken a little further.
