Hello, Mr. Frank! Thank you for another nail-biting explore! You make everything look so effortless, and you simply amaze me! Here are a few fun facts about rats: They CAN go straight up a rock wall. They cling like Velcro because they have four long, clawed toes and a nub of a "thumb". There are also little raised bumps (or "pads") on the bottom of their feet for extra clinging power. A rat can chew through rock, steel, brick, and concrete. A rat can fit through a hole the size of a quarter. If the head fits through, the rat can make the rest of his body fit through. Rats are very social, they live in colonies, and there is an actual hierarchy within the colony. My pet rats were trained to use a litter box - they like to be clean and neat. In the colony, they have separate rooms for food storage, and for trash/toileting. All mama rats raise the young, collectively. If a mama rat is ill or out of the nursery, the other mama rats watch after her ratlets (bats do this too). And rats are highly intelligent. Plus, they are omnivores, so they are very easy to feed! I actually miss having rats, but I own two cats right now and it wouldn't be a good mix. :) Again, thank you for another fun (scary) video. Stay safe!

They can go up really steep walls but it depends on how smooth the wall is. I have been to many places that they can't go!
@madamemulot7614
@madamemulot7614 5 жыл бұрын
@@exploringabandonedmines Oh, I agree with that! And I think one of the reasons that you don't always see them deep inside a mine is because there is no food source, or not enough food to support a colony. Wherever there is one rat, there will be more, as they aren't solitary creatures. Even pet rats need companions/companionship. Oh - and will you please do more magnet fishing? That was actually pretty interesting! Thank you, and be safe.

Watching this is just freakin awesome, I am always left thinking how long those places had laid, undisturbed, deep in the earth while time went on above. Just exactly how you see them in these films, lonely ladders stretching into the gaping maw of a incline shaft, deep mysterious pools of water, ore chutes left to rust, underground forests of timbering, it's all so humbling to see the remnants of once fine places of production and work.

If you come across a lot of filings or nails, etc when you are magnet fishing then you can save yourself a lot of time and effort by putting your magnet into a plastic bag (or something a little tougher even, synthetic burlap?) and then if you reel in a lot of hard to pick stuff all you have to do is take the bag off of the magnet or the magnet out of the bag for a quick and easy cleanup. Its much better than picking ad grasping all of that stuff off of your magnet.. Happy splunting and Best regards.

Frank you always go that extra mile to get into every possible area of the mine, and it was good to see Steven sharing that experience with you. Glad to see you achieved what you set out to do even though you had to make do with webbing instead of your harness, oh and those “maybe, possibly” 😀 sketchy ladders. You did alright with the magnet fishing too, not a bad collection, although it sounds as if Sandy reeled in the best catch. It looked like good fun anyway. Thank you for sharing. Hi, Mancunian. As an ex DCC (Alderley) miner myself, I think it's difficult to compare the mines. The Alderley mines are relatively shallow mines in sandstone. Bearing in mind that they began in Alderley 4,000 years ago with nothing more than antler picks and maul stones, the miners there never had access to the more aggressive industrial- scale mining techniques that we see with Frank, such as dynamite, ventilation systems, electric powered compressors and air drills etc. That said I'd like to think that Frank would be greatly impressed with what the old Alderley miners achieved in West Mine.
@antl82
@antl82 5 жыл бұрын
@@frankjackson8 i do agree, alderley mines are a place of beauty.. fun fact, my late uncle and his best friend was apart of the first lot that made their way back into west, over near the huge bricked up entrance in west, off the the left there is a little ladder, those two placed that ladder there. I'm not claustrophobic but crawling through a passage where my chest was on the floor and the back was pressed against my back was where I drew the line. @cheryldavis5228
@cheryldavis5228 5 жыл бұрын
Right on Frank...the four mantras of mining. DrillBlastMuckAgain (Okay, okay, repeat!) You explain things very well so the non-mine explorer can understand how it all works...in fact, your videos show (I think) much more "explanation" of how it all was done than most of the others out there. Having said that I have two other things to say...I think BIGBADWOOD was asking for one more aspect of it and that was "the dig out" part of his question. You have often explained that miners like to "dig up" 'cuz it was much easier to let the rock (ore and waste) to drop down to where it could be hauled out. So, when miners "dig out" they are generally digging "up". And shafts start (generally) as raises...until they "drift off into a new level." Then they are manways or ore chutes or even Shafts with hoists to the surface (or even hoist-shafts between several levels. There is so much more to it. So, maybe I'll find the time to go through all of your old videos and put together an illustrative video that you can narrate to pull it all together. If you'd like me to---or not. Anyway, the other thing is quite awhile ago I meant to say that I thought that your unexplored manway might be the 1930's attempt to reach the lower workings of the Maple Leaf Mine. I've seen, If I remember correctly, four different references to the Union owners trying to tie in to the Maple Leaf ore body. And they had to go "up" do try to do so. You, of course, are the best one to judge the age of the areas you just found.....so I'm only saying this is one possible explanation for these upwards explorations. But, somewhere in the Union, there is evidence of their attemp(s). Just a thought. Please keep exploring (we ALL do appreciate it) and, well, I guess, it is kinda foolish to tell an old "Cattle Rancher" to stay safe (YEAH, you wouldn't been in the business if you had to worry about all the stuff....you just go do it!), but, Please Stay Safe.....hell, we don't really care about you....we just want more videos. (JOKE). Cheers. @@exploringabandonedmines

this guy must be on creative mode because he didn't run into any monsters. he really should have a couple of diamond picks so he could dig his own way out.

@Exploring Abandoned Mines Great video Frank!!!! It's probably a dumb question, but what does skookum mean? I heard Yakima Canutt use that word once in an old John Wayne western from the 1930's.

@@exploringabandonedmines Thanks!!! You are the only person in real life, that I've ever heard, use that word. Now I feel like I'm a little smarter for knowing that.
