There’s two reasons to press on the floor. You can increase motor unit recruitment and weight of the movement more then a normal bench press. This can be good if the athlete is injured or you just wants to get him strong without tempting injury. Also a floor press does less muscle damage and has more tricep activation

@nao nino It reduces lower body involvement emphasizing the upper body and as a consequence, closely simulating a position MMA fighters might find them selves in.

Great stuff brodda. I implement a lot of these movements with my clients which consists of mostly the general population. Functionality is so crucial in all facets of life whether you're a highly competitive athlete or just the average individual trying to improve their daily function through exercise. Can't believe I'm just seeing this in my timeline. Iron sharpens Iron as I have just subscribed brodda. Putting science back into the equation. Explaining the how and why these movements are essential to the person's respective goal. Biggup!!!!.

Hey Phil, I'm a 52 year old firefighter. I use some of these exercises to benefit me when dragging charged lines or just moving heavy objects in precarious positions. Mostly lifting of obese individuals. But just wanted to say thanks. I may never throw a punch, but the applications are many to your exercises.

Hey Phil, just wanted to say much respect! I've been a striking and S&C coach for over 25 years and I can honestly say you have a hands on approach (figuratively and literally) and attention to detail that you just don't see that often in the field. You also come across as tough, but humble... a great combination. I came across your videos because a client of mine introduced me to your channel saying you remind them of me. I take that as a great compliment. You're a great influence to future S&C coaches!

Great video Phil. Your knowledge, experience, and coaching style is direct and extremely inspirational. Now to my "very basic" questions: how many times a week should you perform a workout like this?? And how long would you have this workout in your client's schedule before changing to a different routine?? Granted, I won't be in the ring with a UFC heavyweight in the foreseeable future, but that doesn't mean I can't partake in the obvious benefits of this level workout. Great stuff.. Thank you for sharing this with us all.

Hey there, got some questions, first exercise; why he should keep his knees on the "line"? Where was the explosive effect? Later, he did benchpress, where is the advantage when having no bench, starting from the ground? Please correct me if i Am wrong, but your Athlete did several strengthening exercises, the only true "explosive" exercise was the ones throwing a ball. As far as i got it explosive strengthening happens when fast movements work against resistance. Most of the stuff shown in the vid was kinda slow.

Hey Phil, just wondering at 2:10 what is the purpose behind doing the press on the floor as opposed to the bench wouldn't you get more range of motion from the bench and therefore more strength? Is it that you're training him to increase his strength at a certain range of motion specific to the punch? Thanks.
