@tomrace4586 For me this is a great conversation because I'm a man of science (BS in biology and now a nurse) and still a theist. I have no problem with scientific facts (evolution, the big bang theory, the many issues with the Bible, etc.). My faith in the almighty is based on faith, an irrational belief that there is a creator while my scientific side deals with the physical world what we can observe, measure, and create reproducible/consistent experiments to demonstrate aka the scientific method. The thing I love about Matt Dillahunty's atheism is he always tries to get at the facts, acknowledges that both atheists and theists have irrational beliefs, and is perfectly willing to take, "I don't know," as an answer. When discussing the universes, humanity, and what it all means there is much we, as human beings, don't understand. I find these debates outstanding.

"Ate a man once." "You ate someone?" "Just a leg. In a siege." "That's horrible!" "Not with mustard." I have cats and eat bacon. Not only that, I've raised and slaughtered a pig myself. That pig was the fattest, happiest, most frustratingly crafty and smug little bastard I've seen in a long long time. It had a good life which was ended quickly enough that he probably didn't even have a chance to realise it was happening. Locking a cat in a crate is harmful. Locking a pig in a crate is harmful. I would avoid eating a cat as much as I possibly could due to sentimental attachments to other cats. To be fair, I was a bit sentimental about the bacon also. And having raised calves and cows for butchering, I've had the same issues. One of our ways of dealing with that was to swap with a neighbor. Sure we know that the cow is going to be killed, but we knew that from day one also. And again, they had good long lives breaking fences and generally misbehaving. Boxes were not involved. I know of another family that reared three pigs for the table. They had young children who played with the piglets, and knew it might be an issue later. So they named the pigs Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Animals were very well treated. Sure their lives were only about two thirds as long as they might have otherwise been, but they only existed in the first place due to the farm also. There's also a case to be made that two thirds of a fantastic life is better than all of a short hard brutal life that it might have otherwise had as a feral animal. Or even a long hard brutal life spent mostly hungry and constantly in fear of not finding the next meal.. Yes it's a bit uncomfortable, but not horribly so. Besides, several animals that turned out to have an excess of personality ended up dying of old age. Ever seen a black cow turn grey with age? Damn thing would come when you call and lead the others around. Hell, we treated her arthritis. Proper farmers DO care for their animals. It's battery farms and mass production in the name of money that are where problems are.

Although Albert seems to have difficulty formulating the contradiction, I do agree that it's there. Most people that I know of agree that animals have moral worth. Less than that of a human, but still worthy of moral consideration due to their ability to experience emotion and subjective experiences. If companies treated cats or dogs the way we treat pigs and cows, people would be burning slaughterhouses to the ground. The way industry treats these animals is absolutely insane, and people generally want to remain ignorant about it so as to not feel any obligation to change their behavior.
@blccdcrange5 ай бұрын
Matt's initial explanation of how he makes moral decisions is "If everyone lived this way, would it be a benefit to humanity" completely breaks apart when he is confronted with eating bacon, most of which is aquired through unnecessary suffering in factory farms. If everyone sustained themselves on factory farmed food, which is becoming a bigger reality as years go on, it is detrimental to human life, animal life, and the life of our planet. His justification for it being "situational" is utter nonsense in this case, because the situation isnt forcing him to make the decision to eat bacon, there are many other options that objectively cause less harm. He just isnt choosing that option, because, as he said, his enjoyment should be considered. But level of enjoyment is irrelevant to the morality of all other harmful actions. No one would think you are morally justified to dump oil in the ocean, just because you enjoy it. But the animal ag industry causes that level of environmental harm every day.

Are cats as delicious as bacon? Do they taste like chicken? Hmm. Nah, raising meat-eating animals for meat is just silly. Herbivoricide ftw!
@jacobmarley24176 ай бұрын
Your comment regarding taste doesn't change the cognitive dissonance that caging animals for 6 months is abusive unless they are to be eaten. The question is not raising and killing but whether common production methods are abusive and tolerable in modern society. Full disclosure i love chicken.
