Thank you for this episode, Brett. I'm a Japanese college student, and right now, there are popular Japanese SNS comic creators who promote prostitution, getting plastic surgery, all about the outside looks, and promoting low self esteem for women, encouraging them to be a prostitute, get money, and buy famous brand bags and get plastic surgery. A lot of people agree with those types of manga, who promote toxic femineity as you said. I felt confused that so many people are feeding into it, but I'm glad to see that I wasn't the crazy one.

My step daughter did this "beauty test" on an app that gives a rating of 0-100 and tells you exactly what they think is wrong with your face.. I asked her to please never do that again. I can't imagine growing up with all this technology, it's heartbreaking to watch

I did this when I was in middle school and I STILL feel like my face is asymmetrical. It only really clicked when I objectively noticed my boyfriend had some asymmetries in his face (cause literally who doesn’t) and it did not impact how attractive I find him at all.

This whole plastic surgery trend is insane. It's become so common that when i went for a consultation the surgeon wanted to make sure it wasn't coming from insecurities. I got an eye lid reduction at 19 because i had only 30% of my field of vision and could barely see without holding my eyes open. Surgeries that are used to help because of something like that are ok.

Things like that I totally understand, or doing something like a nose job because you've broken it in the past and can't breath right. But plastic surgery should be something you can't notice, something that looks natural.

If I was going to be a plastic surgeon I would only do cases like yours, where an actual medical problem exists. Cosmetic surgery should be for reconstruction or corrective for actual issues. I saw a guy on botched who had gone in because he had a severely deviated septum, first doctor just about destroyed his nose-he just wanted it fixed because it was causing severe migraines to have airflow so limited. People who’ve been injured that need reconstruction? That makes sense. Breast reconstruction after cancer treatments? Makes sense. People who have issues like yours that just happened naturally? Makes sense! But to just feed into this ideology of “perfection”? I couldn’t do that. And when it’s done in cases like yours the patients are usually much happier with the end results-cuz you aren’t looking for “perfect looking eyes” you were hoping for the ability to see without your eyelids blocking your vision.

I took a chainsaw to the face when the machine malfunctioned. My jawbone was intact, and completely bare from the tip to my neck. The plastic surgeon tied the chunks back together and repaired my jaw so that only a scar was left. The nerves are even slowly returning.

I wonder if that brown liquid was cooking oil, I watched a documentary ages ago about black market cosmetic alterations in Brazil and a woman had cooking oil injected in her face, buttock and other areas which has left her with fatty deposits and irreparable damage, I know of others that have had dodgy silicone injections which has also caused damage to their lips and cheeks, one of the few only good things about fillers is that with collagen ones they are dissolvable with the harsh black market silicone ones that is not possible or easily done.
