Agree. Great casting. For a fairly "realistic" film about actual "knife fighters". With I think pretty much no camera tricks (e.g. speeding up the film, CGI...). but they could have done even better by...tweaking thee story...TK's character would have to have trained PC's character for at least a decade in a private location...no "house call". No "knife fighitng in what looked like a few hours?". :) it's a skill. Add you need to be of a certain mindset to be okay with using a knife to kill another human being. Add. Wht if PC's character...a photographer..has none of the neeed physical attributes needed?? Speed, quick reflexes...coordination...guys who beome photographers ummm...usually weren't the athletic type to begin with. Take the kids in school who became the "yearbook photographers"...HEH...not that far off from the kids who went to "band camp". :) To train a kid/person with that kind of physical ablity to be a "street knife fighter"??? :) They should have made PC's character at least ex-military...with only brief knife training..at least he had some "battle time"...some degree of strength and physical ability... This would be like taking Joe Accountant and trying to mold him into TK's caracter. :))

I wonder if Tcheky Karyo's knife instruction was for real or did the director create a knife fighting system for the movie? I was highly impressed y Tcheky Karyo. He was one tough, bad a$$ dude in this movie. You don't need to be a handsome stud to be a tough guy in the movies. Karyo's character, Hermes, was actually an anti-hero. This movie really had no heroes. Karyo's character was actually a, "knife-for-hire". It's not known if he killed innocent people or not. Most certainly he carried out tough jobs for his mentor boss, who needed a skilled knife bodyguard or someone who could take out other bad guys. I think Hermes didn't kill innocent people unless they attacked him first.

The martial arts adviser for the movie was Chris Kent, a JKD and Kali guy. I think in the book (in which the characters' fictional style is "PerSev") they reference 20th century military knife systems (Biddle) as inspiration, so while most of the knife work on display in the movie is Filipino-based, brief reference is made to Western techniques (passata sotto and in quartata)

Amanda Pays character upset that Peter Coyotes' character was trying to ensure. What to them would never happen again. By training in this martial art! Why would she be upset with him for that?

no sequels for good story like this. Modern tv series are great but have gotten us addicted. I like self contained stories that leave more mystery and unanswered questions. Just my opinion.
