Joe Kious(1st blade) is an outstanding knifemaker and talented artist, i believe his focus now is on knife art, with some unique models(real piece of jewelery) being sold for thousands of dollars. But all knifes showed are excellent choices.

From left side: Randall #2, Applegate-Fairbairn dagger (manufactured by Al Mar Knives probably, postwar design, not really used by English commandos, but based more-or-less on WW2 Fairbairn-Sykes dagger), Randall #18, Joe Kious custom Subhilt Dagger, Randall #14, Benchmade Delta Raider, Buck.. 120 or 119, and I do not recognize the last one :)

When I saw the movie on DVD i thought the last one was a Gerber BMF but while the color of the materials could fit the overall design doesn't.

Thanks for the run-down! Did this movie predate the Böker run of Applegate-Fairbairns? I know they offered the pattern at least as early as the 90's, but not 100% sure. And I'm gonna join the chorus of folk drooling over the Kious. Unlike Peter Coyote I'm not planning on gettin' into any knife fights, just the sheer aesthetics of the thing beautiful!

I just love this film's soundtrack in the background, it brings back great memories of my past, stories and tales that I lived. I was part of a group of friends, by the way, it was not really a group, but rather kind of a gang, and we made big messes and fun together, until for reasons of fights and bagging a part of the gang (my friends ) separated from the other. And with that, we become enemies and fight the other. Until I finally managed to fulfill my revenge mission against one of the guys who had betrayed me, and I left my friends. I may be reading into the dialogue, but it seems Hermes chooses the Kios for Peter, who is a relative beginner. While the subhilt does make grip transition impractical, it also offers more stability for the grip, which is very important for a novice. Also, the Randall model 14 is considerably heavier than the Kios, which, combined with its finger-grooved handle, can make grip transition difficult as well. Finally, the Kios's full double-edge make flipping the knife less necessary.

I was really impressed, when I saw the dvd... The end was different!!! Italian state tv had shown a shorter version. In the original version, the photographer meets his girl again, in an archeological site.

Peter Coyote as Mandrake and Tcheky Karyo as Hermes. The movie was filmed in 1991. I got my DVD on Ebay.

Thanks a lot for your help, but I've got a question for the knife expert/enthusiast you are: don't you find strange that a knife fighter like Hermes, very keen to the rapid change from overhand to underhand, fells in love for a sub-hilted double edged fighter??? I've always found it an impossible movement.

E' stato un "uovo di Colombo": la tipologia sub-hilt è tutto ciò che rimane della scherma di "rapier" italiana e spagnola, e se ci fai caso, l'Exposure knife non altro che una spada "da moschettiere" accorciata; doppio filo simmetrico, guardia con aggancio per il dito indice.

I recall hearing that Kious stopped making fixed blade fighters...because he didn't like them BEING fighters. Most of his knives are folders now. Perhaps that's why in the movie his knife (borrowing heavily from a Loveless design?) was "rare." More realistically, the movie is just a movie. The Randall 18 is not a "classical randall." That would be a model 1. The 14 is sort of a fighter but I've heard it was apparently also nicknamed "the spade" because it was very utilitarian. That "Applegate Fairborn" was just a fancy 80's dagger with movable weights in the handle. Daggers in general are not a great choice.

Applegate Fairbairn is not bad but for both offense & defense the Model 14 is better I'll take. I'll take the Kious 2 my friend.

You're absolutely right. Anyway I'd have choosen the Kious first... also, the relatively short grip of the model 14 would have made the transition even more difficult (and dangerous).

If you search the internet, it is possible to find pictures of the knife you seek. Type "Joe Kious subhilt fighter" in the search engine. As you probably know, Joe can no longer make fixed-blade knives (I think due to arthritis), which is why this knife is so rare. However, if you like the design, you may want to a De Leon model A (subhilt fighter). Other makers construct a similar model. Continue searching, and you will find at least something close to the J.K. subhilt.

The beauty of this Joe kious knife is unbelievable.Look at the balance he swings i't with...amazing. I would like to know who got/own it now - and I think the price would be 10 grand, seen in the light of Joe don't makes fixed blades anymore. If i got the money I'll buy it.The movie are also known as "EXPOSURE" I got it on videotape - and I think, I have seen it on DVD..trying to find info about it, and post the info as comment to this video.

Google "Loveless subhilt" It's a common design. The Kious in the movie is likely made of polished 440C which an utterly crap steel for knives...but it polished up well and was popular among stock removal makers in the 70's and 80's. That Kious is a beautiful, but it's mostly an art knife at this point, not a read using knife.

Have a reproduction of the kios. Harder to knock out of your hand then the Randle 14 I own both. My Favorite knife for when I travel is a small 4 inch folding snap shot knife razor sharp on one side. Can keep it in your pants pocket in case you need it. God forbid you need it the fight is over in fraction of a second.

No. The model 2 is the Randall version of the Fairbairn-Sykes commando knife, while the Arkansas toothpick is actually classed as a Randall Bowie.
