I have learned both, but not used either of these techniques very much over the years. I used to see beautiful filet crochet curtain patterns in the magazines and drool over them. But with over 200 sq. of window area to cover, in cotton thread, on a very small hook? I never got up enough ambition and courage to making them. A shawl like this is much more inspiring and achievable for me.

I’ve made several afghans that use a variety of stitches, including ones that were worked similarly to this mosaic stitch (but the designers never called it mosaic stitch). Mosaic for crochet and knitting is so different. I prefer mosaic knitting for scarves and hats. Mosaic crochet is slow going and I tend to make more mistakes and have to unravel or frog it often. Either way, you end up with a textured beauty so mosaic patterns like this is a real treat. Thanks so much for teaching us. 😊

Never had opportunity to work filet. Absolutely love mosaic crochet. P. S. If you lock the stitches in the back the work becomes reversible - no loose flaps. - Your shawls are beautiful as are your yarns.
