Yeah I know, when I practice my shots at the elbow, I make only like 75% of them, but this season at my junior high school, all my points were from the elbows, mainly right elbow, most of them were catch and shoot, and I would get the ball, and that adrenaline would pump in me when I shoot, and every single time I shot it except for maybe 2 times, I drained it. When I shoot from three I lower my release slightly, and so did Austin as he got further away, so I think it may help you Devin if you want to jump less as you move really far out. Another thing that my dad and I have found is that if you bring the ball straight up and not bring it towards your face it will help with consistency. One more critique for your shot Devin is you kind of hitch the ball, and that will decrease power from your shot.

Practice finding the form that best suits you, if you don’t know what does then do your best to imitate your favorite shooter and build your jumper from there, it’s not rocket science or something you have to be born with. @zeokenX I've been playing various leagues for 20years, Yeah, I don't play that much anymore. But I guess I did play and practiced way more than you. It's a different thing when you deliberately practice a technique or try to change your habits or fix things, than practicing fast shooting, shooting of the screens etc. During the practice, we often had shooting sessions where it was important to loudly say the current score, how many shoots we took during shooting. Also almost after every practice each of player would shoot free throw and coach would indicate how many FTs need to be made in order not to do suicide lines. That was shooting under pressure, because your team mates would laugh at you, the coach would be teasing with you, and it could be that because of you everybody including you would be running suicides. Or practicing shoots when after a miss you had to run the whole court. Here the situation is totally different.

As someone who picked up basketball late compared to most (6th grade, but didnt actually play serious till 9th or 10th grade, like I literally couldn't dribble between my legs till 9th grade) and when I started to take it serious, I worked religiously on finishing at the rim with english, but I was never a shooter. As of my first year out of highschool I one day just decided to become a shooter and within a week or 2 became a perimeter threat and slowly started to increase my range to shoot deep. All that said the keys to becoming an exponentially better shooter (if your not a shooter already) is confidence to take 3s in game as often as possible and to look for the 3 ball. And shoot it one motion, dont halt at the peak of your release with a set pt, transfer your lower body momentum into a fluid one motion release.

If you watch he's using a similar form but changing the speed and force he performs the shot with. Also, the further he moves out the more force he's deriving from his lower body and arm movement. More force and more speed equals more power which means further distance. The trick is to practice this so it becomes natural with your shot form so you end up with a consistent shot from all ranges knowing just the right force and speed to use. There are huge benefits to having a single motion shot which takes the path of least effort and finishes at the top of your upward motion rather than a broken motion or shot that moves above your head and backwards before coming forwards.

His shot form did not change. Only the point of release to facilitate distance. When you are shooting up close your shot is up but the further you go its not so much lower but the release is up AND OUT. They didnt explain it well but this drill is important. Not so much about maintaining your form but more on transfer of energy. The body subconsciously knows to move the ball further you have to shoot the ball one smooth motion and not stop the energy. This is obvious in dev who pauses his release on the top of his form but the further he gets the less he pauses. Weve been taught power comes from the legs for so many years but it really comes from the upper body. Reps will make it consistent. Sorry late reply I know.
@dpandmj49693 жыл бұрын
Yea you’re not wrong but important mechanic or skill to add to your shot is being able to change your set point. Obviously what I’m talking about is technically different since my principle would relate more to raising it for contested shots, but you get the idea. Basically what I’m saying is that his shot does technically stay the same in his mechanics, and his set point did get lower but it’s to cope with distance.

At normal 3pt range, most players shoot with the posterior muscle of their arm ( triceps). By increasing range of shot, they must utilize their biceps and other anterior muscles. They push the ball. But if you shoot too much and get tired, your shooting form goes wrong. And you don't want to get used to that wrong shooting form. So do not shoot too much when youre trying to increase your range. Go to the gym. Do workouts for both anterior and posterior muscles of your arm. Its the key to develop your posterior muscle. Because shooting by your posterior muscle virtually makes your shot accuracy. Its also important to develop your wrist strength. I couldnt shoot at the 3pt range. But after 5 days doing workout for my wrist, I did shoot from 3pt line.

@msarek41005 жыл бұрын
It's a really good drill to create form and make a player gauge power v distance. But...the release point is changing, so the power is generating less from the shoulder and more from the arm's momentum. Like pitching a baseball vs swinging a golf club. Because Austin's eye-hand is so elite he can keep the target on point. By adding the hop, you're taking some force exertion out of the arm's swing which should produce better accuracy. A full jump would change the upper mechanics. This is all good, but its application has to be scaled down based on age and male or female.

@Devin.Williams The reason you cant reach the net from deep range is because your doing a quick 2 motion shot, (Watch closely) if your trying achieve that pure 1 motion shot, shoot the ball like a rocket. The problem I see you have is your bringing the ball to your set point and focusing too much on it and that takes away the pureness away from the 1 motion. When at the 3 point line shoot the ball the same way you shoot in the video because your strong enough but if you really want that quick release shooting deep range has to be straight up, like you mention shooting like a kid as if your just throwing up the ball (set point (set point being lower,) also focusing more on your shooting hand

So anyone wondering why austin is taking free throws to half its to facilitate and focus on transfer of energy. By removing the jumping your it forces the shooter to shoot one motion. This is most evident in dev who pauses when the ball gets above his head, but as he gets further the pause isnt as long or almost completely gone. This is because the body already subconsciously knows that to move the ball further, the motion needs to be smoother (one motion/transfer of energy). This is the best way to increase range. This is also a reason why nba players are adopting a set shot form more and more because it is only recently become common knowledge that shot range and power come from the upper body and not the lower body (as it was religiously taught in the past.)

I really need some advice : whenever I shoot ( I am right handed ) my wrist seems to make a 360 motion when the ball is released. My hand then ends back up at the set point. I am questioning if this is affecting my shot.

Can someone whose a little bit more experienced explain to me what he was saying about the 1-2 step he does before every shot. To me he looks as if he catches the ball, then takes two steps, which would be a travel since he didn’t set the ball down before taking a step. I understand this is practice but you should also practice as if you’re in a game. Any clarification?
