It’s crazy what one year does to a drivers reputation. Went from a lovable underdog to probably the most hated and dogged on driver this year. Especially being a fan of his since joining spire, I’m just depressed at this point.

tbf he was never actually a loveable underdog. People on the internet were just convincing other people on the internet that he was a loveable underdog, when he never was. He was the worst driver in the field when he went full time cup 7 years ago and wrecked every race and people ragged on him for it. Then when he came back a year or two later he publicly hated on the fanbase for criticizing all his crashing, then he started a podcast and suddenly a few people started rooting for him for some reason Obv im not hating on your opinion but in all honesty, he's never even been close to a loveable driver. He just happened to have a strange cult following on the internet and for that reason people assumed he was a likeable guy when he actually wasnt.

@@MrJohansen People wanted him to be Matty D 2.0, underdog B+ driver trapped in C equipment, when he almost won that Atlanta SS race in July '22, he gained a ton of fans. Similar to when Matt almost won the Bristol Night Race in 2019. But in reality it turns out he's not that good and is just a slightly above average superspeedway racer at best. Nothing against him personally from me, but he fed into the hype himself and consistently outdrove his capability leading to all his wrecks this season.

It’s come close to happening 3 times in NASCAR’s modern era (Bobby Allison at Dega, 1987, Carl Edward’s blow over at Dega in 2009, and Austin Dillon’s blow over at Daytona in 2015). Funny how just over 20 years from its inception, restrictor plate style racing has come full circle to the problem it set out to stop.
