Exterior Brick House Makeover With Romabio Masonry Flat Paint

Welcome to the very first episode of BREW CITY BUILDS!!! Watch me give an exterior makeover with Roma Bio Masonry Flat Paint to the brick house I recently purchased with my boyfriend, Ben. Painting exterior brick is WAAAY more intense than I initially thought, but I love how it turned out with the Roma Bio Masonry Flat paint I ended up using. Looks legit. Just wish I would’ve used a paint sprayer.
A little backstory on me ... I’ve been living and working in NYC for the past eighteen years, but with everything going on in the world 😷 I decided to take a little break from Brooklyn and buy my first home in Milwaukee with my boo. That way he has a place to call home since he already lives here and I'll have a little escape to go to when I have downtime from work. I’m definitely not a carpenter by any means, but I do think I can accomplish what I have planned for this little house. I have big plans, so hopefully you’ll subscribe and join me on this journey of turning this old house into a home.

you should! ours is holding up great. i would suggest using a paint sprayer. it’s probably was easier than how i did it.

amazing! it’s a really great product that has held up perfectly since it was painted. i would suggest using a sprayer, if you’re going to do it. the prep is a little more annoying to tape everything off, but i would definitely go that route if i was to do it again. think it would be a huge timesaver. thanks for watching!!

Turned out nice. You can get Romabio tinted with Benjamin Moore colors. Romabio is a great paint but they don't have enough stock colors. I buy mine from JC Licht Benjamin Moore down in the Chicago area and they tint it whatever I want. The limewash they make is great too.

This is great! I also want to use romabio. No latex paint on exterior brick! What’s great to see is that you were able to do an even not splotchy coat. A lot of photos have thar splotchy look! I only have a small area like tehe left side of you house. No back or sides either.

hey nancy! thanks for watching :) the whole process was pretty easy and the splotchiness wasn’t an issue for my brick, luckily. i definitely suggest using romabio. it’s been a year since i painted the exterior of my house and it’s held up beautifully. let me know if you have any any more questions when you do it.

Great video. Thanks for sharing it! Did you find the Romabio to have good coverage without original brick color showing through? I’ve seen that with other Romabio users as the look they were going for, but what you did really caught my eye.

thanks will! i used the masonry flat paint rather than the lime wash for a more opaque look. i didn’t want to see any of that old brick color coming through. it’s a super matte finish, which is what i was going for. thanks for watching!

thanks so much! that was definitely one of the harder jobs so far on this house, so i was trying not to lose my mind during the process. as far as your question, i did a a little mortar repair on any little cracks before i started painting, so the romabio rep told me i should put a coat of primer over that patching to make sure the paint would stick since it is designed to absorb into stone only and the mortar sealant had a little bit of silicone in it. just an extra step to ensure not having random little dark spots all over the mortar when i was done. thanks for your comment. appreciate you watching :)

I have a question have you run into any feedback about using a airless sprayer for this product? One person I found recommended not to. I was really biting my nails when I saw you rolling it on the wall as information was told to me it’s only good to do by brush and I totally feel you about that laborish Time Framing it takes to do that 😅

hi! i think it’s okay to use an airless sprayer if you’re not using any of roma bio’s textured paints. if i was to do it again, i would definitely use a sprayer. not sure this link will work here, but there’s a page on their site that gives tips on what sprayer to use with their paint. hope it helps put your mind at ease :) romabio.com/how-do-you-use-a-paint-sprayer/

Do you notice any cracking in the mortar? I just did a first coat of masonry flat and as it's drying I'm noticing some cracking around the edges of the brick

Dear Brew City Builds, I used to have a disco ball hanging in the doorway in front of my bedroom. I took that one off and put it on the trunk in the living room. hey toye! roma bio is great. was pretty easy to use and has held up perfectly through the cold, wet winter so far. i used a roller and wish i bought a sprayer from the get-go. not sure it would have made the process easier, but i’m assuming it would. are you planning on painting with it?

hey roxanne! i did a bunch of research before starting this project and the romabio masonry flat is supposed to last for 20 years. it’s been about 15 months since i painted and it still looks amazing! not sure on the exact terminology, but i think it’s still considered lime wash, but i didn’t spray water on my brick to dilute the paint, so it’s super opaque. thanks for watching!

it really depends. i didn’t have to for our house, but i know in some cases priming is necessary. it’s best to call the paint manufacturer to find out what you need to do.

romabio offers a primer to go with their paint. if you’re thinking about doing it, you can call their customer service and they will answer any questions you have about what to use with your brick. that’s what i did :)

hey karen! i only used a primer where i patched up the tuckpointing. it wasn’t necessary for our particular brick. i think you only need a primer if the brick has existing paint. hope that helps!
