The commentary for 'Wedding' mentions that the writers considered getting Rachel Blanchard to return a 'coup' as she was unavailable for series 3 due to appearing in the infamous film 'Snake on a plane'! They also mentioned that they wanted Nancy in the series a bit more but she was only available for a short time-possibly explaining why Big Suze was used instead in early drafts and why Nancy didn't return after series 4.

I wonder if ideas like 'Threeism' or 'Nether Zone' were on the back burner for a while before they were made as I could imagine doing an awkward dinner party with Sophie+ Jeff/ Johnson +Suze or being trapped in Elena's flat while Gail is there if they had being used in earlier episodes.

Hello Andrew. I was a long time fan of Peep Show since it began and I wondered that when you had watched this series if you had observed any odd visual artefacts on the screen during any of the episodes? I must have watched every episode multiple times but one Christmas three years ago I was amused to observe what looked to me like what I can only describe as green screen malfunction. I'm not aware of this show using green screen so my next thought was digital malfunction which might have caused this odd screen artefact. I won't go into any details on here for now but If you're interested to read more on what oddity I've found then I'd be happy to fill in the rest of the details. If you have discovered any odd screen artefacts then I'd really like to hear from you about them. Thanks.
@axw3 жыл бұрын
I've pointed out a green screen error in the show before in one of my videos, from the episode Gregory's Beard.
@jamesmills48503 жыл бұрын
@Andrew Cool. As a long time fan of the show I was amused that until very recently I had no idea of its useage. Perhaps you haven't seen all the glitches present in the show? I'd recommend watching episode 'New Years Eve', which has a very interesting visual artefact. During the conversation at the flat doorway between Jeremy and the woman he likes, pay close attention to the eyes of the woman. You may have to slow it down to appreciate the full effect because it'll zip on by. It happens multiple times with her eyes during their short chat. I think you might enjoy it. Needless to say that it's best observed in hd and on a large screen. Cheers.
@axw3 жыл бұрын
@@jamesmills4850 I just watched that conversation through a few times and slowed it down, and didn't see anything I'd say was a visual artefact, hmm. Are you referring to moments like the very start of the shot in which she says "I found out he slept with someone else", where her eyes seem to be off centre and then quickly move back into place? I think that just looks awkward because it cuts back to her mid eye-roll. Or was it something else?
@jamesmills48503 жыл бұрын
@Andrew The timestamps are: 2 mins 4sec, then 2 mins 28 sec, then 2 mins 30 to about 2 mins 41 sec to 2 mins 42 sec, then at around 2 mins 42 sec to 2 mins 46 sec. I observed this oddity while viewing the show on Netflix. Is this significant? I don't know? Sadly I don't have my Peep Show dvds anymore and so haven't been able to verify if the phenomenon occured on them too, but it was still there, visible in the actresses eyes, because I had revisited Netflix last month to show my brother this very weirdness. Happy hunting.
@jamesmills48503 жыл бұрын
@Andrew Hello Andrew. New Years Eve, episode 6 of season 7, If you can access Netflix then pause at 22:13 and 22:12 minutes left to go. Also pause at 22:00 and look at her pupils each time. Her pupils look odd throughout her closeups, but it's at timestamps 22:13, 22:12 and 22:00 that the weirdness is most striking. Anyway, I ought to have been clearer. Weird effects, uh? Cheers. Edit: from Seconds, to minutes.

She was great, they just developed her character badly. She was meant to be just as weird as Mark, just more secure about who she was. She ends up portrayed as really cool and desirable. I think she has more male interest in the end than Nancy, which is pretty bizarre.
@davidz25623 жыл бұрын
@@mankytoes How exactly is Dobby great? She's entertaining only in s5 e2, Spin War. In what way(s) is she desirable? She's well below average in looks, personality, dress sense, voice etc. The claim that she's ideal for Mark & very similar to him makes no sense - they have very different interests: she doesn't share his main interest, history, at all. She loves playing video games, but he only does when in her company, so he clearly doesn't enjoy doing so. Her having many fans makes no sense - what's her appeal?
@mankytoes3 жыл бұрын
@@davidz2562 Criticising her looks and dress sense are a bit weird mate, it's a comedy. Mark wears pretty boring clothes and Jez often dresses like a teenager, and no one criticises them for it. Like most British comedies, the cast look more like normal people, compared to a show like Friends, where everyone looks like a model. I wouldn't say she was ideal for him or that they were very similar, just that she was more on his level socially. He's constantly trying to fit in and seem more normal around most people, and he doesn't have to do that around her. I think the writers actually found this difficult- so much of the humour around Mark is about how uncomfortable he is, especially around women, so they had to make her "cooler" to get that dynamic back. She's just a funny, interesting character, at least initially.
@davidz25623 жыл бұрын
@@mankytoes Many Dobby fans say she's very attractive, so it's relevant to say that she isn't, and that several female characters in PS are. She doesn't look normal - she sticks out like a sore thumb by having by far the worst dress sense in PS. Mark has to try to fit in with Dobby as well, watching box sets of TV shows he dislikes & pretending he wants to go interrailing. She doesn't try to fit in with him. She's only funny, interesting & fun in Spin War. Why did she stay in PS for years?

What prevents PS from gaining mainstream popularity? Other C4 sitcoms - including The Inbetweeners & Friday Night Dinner - gained mainstream popularity, so what's the obstacle for PS?
@davidz25623 жыл бұрын
@Éric Rohmer Most haven't heard of it. Unless I'm talking to people whom I know are aware of it I say "The sitcom Peep Show", so that they don't think I'm talking about actual peep shows. They're only iconic to fans, who are a very small minority of the population. No ep had close to 2 m viewers. It's nowhere near as well-known or popular as The Office. It's better-known & more popular than Detectorists & PJDN put together, but that's not saying much as both of those have tiny viewerships.
@davidz25623 жыл бұрын
@@jamesatkinsonja Yet it took 7 y for FND to become popular. Who do you hear quoting PS? Family, friends, neighbours, colleagues, strangers on the bus?
@RenegadeShepard692 жыл бұрын
Well where I live it will never get popular. Even The Office US and it's line of humor was a bit niche until the pandemia here, British TV doesn't ever capture viewers here. I doubt it will have that much luck in any anglophone nations too. Nowadays even more than in the mid 2000s people are not attracted to that kind of raw depiction of human flaws. Everything is too symbolic, viewers are not left with much nuance to empathize with undesirables (undesirable thoughts, actions, feelings, people) even less laugh at/with them. Could you see Mitchell and Webb type of men leading a popular series today? They are not that type. Peep show's legacy lives on through Succession which is the most American way that a few of the writing team from PS found out to make a show.
@jamesatkinsonja Жыл бұрын
Both Inbetweeners and Friday Night Dinner have some continuity but it's fairly minor and means you can start anywhere with it like a lot of 'classic' sitcoms. Peep Show in contrast is very narratively focused so it's hard to just watch a random episode on TV/Streaming from a later series without prior knowledge [it would be hard to watch a series 5 episode stand alone for example without seeing the wedding etc first]. Peep show is a lot darker than both Inbetweeners and Friday Night Dinner which keeps it's audience niche too [I love Nighty Night for example but that was never going to be a mainstream hit].
