A little tiny hint I have - Do not be afraid to be a copycat. Don't expect yourself to be able to invent a whole new moustrap and never resort to ideas you did not invent, but rather saw in other games. If you see an idea and you think it will fit into your game - grab it. You'll tweak it along the way later and probably make it different. Maybe even better than it was where you saw it. Don't let ideas like "I'm not going to do it this way, because *** does it already" stop you.

I have wanted to make a game like the Serious Sam series for a few years now. Though considerably weirder, with a greater emphasis on weapons with their own physics rather than hitscans, and more attention brought on the plot. Someday... Definitely NOT my first game; I can tell you that!

I think it was also on an Extra Credits video about videogame narratives that it's usually best to determine what gameplay mechanics you want to use BEFORE deciding on a plot. Lay out how exactly the game plays out and what you want the player to do, and that should work out what kind of story the game should have better than the reverse. That really helped me out.

Watching this actually made me reconcider my way of tackling game development. I've been wanting to get into it for so long and I've so many ideas I want to put in, but now I realise that if I want to get into the industries, I shouldn't look to make some sort of behemoth of a game. Like you said; Keep it simple. I will take that to heart.

This episode just about sums up the first few projects I've been working on. It's frustrating, even with a team, to try to get so many new things done you either haven't done before or don't have the manpower to complete in a timely fashion. It's also much harder to stay motivated when you are working in your spare time, for free and on projects which may not succeed and pay out. It's important to keep trying and keep learning as you go. You never get NOTHING out of working on a game, even a failed project. Another good episode. Thanks a lot EC. Keep up the good work!

Back in the day I created a game in the games factory, never really got past the first few frames but I crafted my own textures, animations and mechanics... Took me years to get the knowledge to make weapon menus, selecting and stuff, then I got bored as the game factory was pretty obsolete when i finally started to get somewhere. This will no doubt get buried, but i LOVE that there are so many people who put their first games in the comments. it's both motivating for those guys, because the audiance here is actually nice and supportive, and it motivates others to try themselves. there are too many greedy corporations in all forms of entertainment, and the games industry is one of the easiest to enter, since all you need is a half-decent computer.

This video has helped me so much. My friend and I have recently started making a game, and we're designing around our skills. He's a great musician, so our game has a heavy emphasis on music. I'm pretty great at coding, but horrible at art, so our characters are fairly simplistic. As someone who has tried to make games before (and failed... a lot) designing around your skills is a GREAT idea. But don't be afraid to push yourself, that's pretty important.

I'm an engineer and let's be honest I will never be a game dev no matter how much of a nerd I may be. But as someone who has an often very difficult technical job I feel I can offer advice to people entering into something of relative scale. There is one trait you will need to be successful, and simply put, you won't be without it, that is follow through, you cannot abandon your project when it gets difficult. The best way to know you're meant to do something is if you can still enjoy it and keep at it even when the going gets rough. Being an engineer can be a bitch but I wouldn't have it any other way, it's what makes it worth doing, If you can make a game (or anything really) on similar ideals, you will be successful, just keep at it and have fun. Edit: I know I shouldn't have but I typed this before watching the video, and it actually lined up exactly how I thought it would. Just saying, keep at it, power through, and let the struggle power you through :)

Great advice. As for assets. I found that learning to use a 3D modeling program like Blender (there are TONS of tutorials online about using it) is one of the best ways. It's simple, easy to get started with and what you create will probably look fairly decent. For example, I created some walls with Blender, I angled them for isometrics and after some experimenting, I got it down pat. Walls are just cubes, reshaped, textures added is easy. An enemy is just as easy to do up. Things like sound effects seem difficult, but are surprisingly easy and fun to create. I created a cannon shot one time by dropping a book onto my desk, recording it, then slowing down the speed of the sound in Audacity (another free program for audio). I created a fire sound by crinkling hard plastic, recording it, then blowing into a microphone and recording that. I combined the two sounds in audacity and the end result sounds exactly like fire. Audacity also has some built in functions for creating sounds as well. There are lots of game engines out there you can use, but personally, I highly recommend you learn something like C++ using a library like SDL for your sounds and graphics, this way you have full control over it and for me, it is more satisfying to make my own game engine. It is cross-platform, which means if you do it right, you can create a game for different operating systems like Linux, a MAC, Windows etc. Even if just for Windows, SDL is pretty easy to use and again, there are tons of tutorials out there.

I agree with the concern, and working alone will most certainly help make the learning process easier. Lunarex in particular brought up an example I know all too well. However, if the circumstances are right, it's fine to work with a partner. The most important part is to make sure your partner is both contributing to the game and motivated to make it as much as you are. Prior friendship is entirely optional. My first set of games were made for Global Game Jam (which is coming up soon!), and everyone there were really motivated in making games. I found that teaming with others who are equally interested in making the proposed game idea were the best teams, even if we had no prior experience working with each other.

I'm actually starting a project with a co-worker, to be free on Android, and I must disagree with you strongly. Not everybody will have the uber bad experience of working with a team. Further, people ofter compliment each other. Where you are weak he/she may be strong and vice versa. In our case I'm a software engineer while he's a graphics artist. We both have enough experience in each other's fields to understand what is going on so we can communicate effectively. I would hate to undertake even a simple game alone simply because there is so much to do. Controlls, graphics, sound, music, etc ....

I made my first game in GameMaker 11 years ago. It was full of glitches, in fact, I couldn't even make moving left and right work properly. I just pretended that I meant for the game to behave the way it did and designed my levels around these glitches that I couldn't fix. Now today, I'm working on a simulation game with a team of incredibly talented 3D artists and I'm still trying to pretend like everything is going according to plan. haha In my opinion, that's the best way to make games :)

I don't know anything about coding, or any of the terminology, I'm just an artist with a story to tell, but this has given me hope that I can learn. Like you said, I just have to remind myself that I'm not going to learn how to do this in a week. It took me about 11 years to be able to draw as good as I can now, its probably going to take just as long to make decent games.

What are your thoughts on starting with making mods for existing games? To me it feels like it would be a good way to get some experience in the design aspects, and possibly coding and art aspects depending on what game you mod, while still being able to push out something that's actually enjoyable to use. Though granted, personally I've always just had interest in modding, rather than creating, when it comes to computer games (though I like creating when it comes to board games). But can that be a good idea to start with, or is that also a pit fall?
@ultimaterc
@ultimaterc 9 жыл бұрын
The scope is much narrower, so it's easier to get started and actually complete something. But as you say, depending on what game you're modding, the range of skills you can acquire are also much narrower. That said, I DO know of quite a few people who work in the industry now, at AAA studios, who started as modders. But they're mostly Art and level design types. Nothing wrong with that if those are your interests and strengths (and the amount of art needed in games these days is enormous), but if you're more technical, modding doesn't offer as much.
@cshahbazi1220
@cshahbazi1220 9 жыл бұрын
I've worked on numerous RTS games for modding and I can say that modding is great to learn design, granted that you know some theoretic stuff too, otherwise it'll end up being something you "feel" is right. I'll admit the scope of my work were also very narrow as I worked with map editors and didn't touch the tools for models/art. An important thing from my experience is that the tools that you're provided with would make the world of difference, both in how easy it is and how much you can get done; for example Red Alert and Tiberian Sun's editors were a bit hard to get into but ended up being rather easy to work with, scripting was hard (at least back when I was doing it, I was only 15 years old then) and your options were open. Meanwhile Warcraft3's editor had tons of more options and you could build almost anything from it and map design was also rather easy to get something acceptable done, but on the other hand scripting was a nightmare and I couldnt get anything meaningful done. On the other hand, Stronghold Legends' map editor was very easy to get into and the scripting was also much simpler and easy to do yet your options were more limited, but it was also a game I went a step further and also started messing with audio files too. The good thing is that if you can get work done like I did in Stronghold Legends, you can exercise game design pretty well, but not so much the rest of the aspects like art, modeling, animation, programming etc. It also doesn't teach much teamwork because at best you'd be working with 2-5 people and those are like "big" projects. I can also admit that despite the amount of time I did invest, I don't particularly feel more ready to work on a game, I don't feel like you could throw me in a studio and tell me to start working because I don't have the technical qualifications. Perhaps in the next episodes someone like me would get more enlightened, but so far I feel the need to prepare myself more technically. TL;DR: It gives experience to practice some game design but not the other fields of production. It's more of a personal experience than something that readies you to work within a professional team.

I've actually been hoping for them to do an episode on modding (even though I've never asked them to or brought it up, just a silent hope). I myself have been modding for Fallout 3 / New Vegas for quite some time, and given how easy modding has been made for those games, at least for those games it definitely gives you more in the design chapter, unless you're like, fixing scripting errors or something. But yeah, I think it can be a nice gateway, at least to get you started. If you've started out and gotten a taste of what you can do, then that might just be the incentive you need to get over the thresh-hold of learning to use an engine from base or something.
@dak1st
@dak1st 9 жыл бұрын
Depending on what you mean by modding. Modding can be making Warcraft 3 maps using the pre-made world editors or hacking into .DLLs and changing code. If you go for the first kind you will learn quite a lot of game design without having to bother about coding or content creation. If you go for the latter one you will focus more on coding and less on the other areas.

Not my first game, but what was supposed to be my first non-text based game. I had this grand idea of Ultima style game. After working on it for two years I actually did the math and figured out that even if nothing went wrong just writing the code would have taken me almost ten years. Nowdays I probably could make it happen with RPG Maker or such, but it's still very important to start small. Your first game will not be your best game. Unless you stop making games after the first you will be making better ones later.

Does "RPG Maker" count as an engine? :D I've worked with that, and actually 'finished' quite a few small projects, and I can ABSOLUTELY relate to everything said in this video. It's SO easy to underestimate the work that goes into even the simplest games, and even with such a easy to use 'engine'... ... I also have to admit that I started FAR more projects than I ever finished, and that, I think, is also part of the experience. Even an unfinished project (hopefully) taught you some things, and be it only the fact that you are just one person. There's only so much you can do in a certain time-frame, and only so much patience for a single project...
@QXbR9
@QXbR9 9 жыл бұрын
RPG Maker does totally count as an engine, and although it's not to my tastes, I disagree with those who say "It's not a real engine". Software that can make multiple genres of games is technically an engine, not a maker. I totally relate to you on the patience part. I am not a patient person. >.>

While you can certainly learn a lot from unfinished projects, it's always best to get out of the habit as soon as you possibly can and get into the mindset of finishing every game. I fell into this trap myself and got caught in a really vicious cycle of never getting anything done for years. Even if it's just something small, having something fully completed is always a good thing.

Back in the day, I thought this was sound advice. But the more that I learn about classic game dev, the more I realize that this advice is really geared towards non-programmers. Almost all of the advice tend to go around a game engine's learning curve or limitations. Of course you can only start by making simple games with game engines; you can't really make a Super Mario Bros. clone with a game engine without an adequate knowledge of the engine. This being said, if you are learning and making games like how devs from the 90's did it, all you need to learn are certain programming fundamentals and it will be 1000x way simpler than using a game engine (it's still hard, but you have more ideas on what goes wrong). You still can't make a God of War, but you can definitely just make your dream game as long as it has only 16 or 256 colors. If you're a non-programmer and don't know nor care about terrible coding, anything more complex than Gamemaker (Unity, Unreal, Godot) will more likely hamper your progress than help it.

It's not easier at all because you need to design and implement most of the systems yourself, as well as code a load of boilerplate. Using Unity or any other engine is far easier, in my opinion. I've used both methods. Sure, the API can be hard and confusing but you don't have to implement things from scratch and it's not like you have to learn all of the API at once. You just learn what your game needs and what's relevant.

My first game was a Pac-Man clone I made with Game Maker 7, with the final area being 9 screens in size. It included all sorts of wacky elements, like one way paths, warp zones (including warping to previous levels), death pills. I've since lost it and would have to start from scratch if I were to make it again. My most recent game, Ball Popper, I made with a purchased copy of Construct 2. It's extremely unsuccessful and freezes (but my friend says it works fine in both his computer and his tablet so ... I dunno what's going on with that). I'm in China teaching English now.

I have re-made a few classic games although I want to expand my programming and game making ability, I study it at school and I study it at home so literally 24/7 I am making games. I want to build a career from it and have wanted to for 3 years now. My laptop broke a few weeks ago and I remembered we had a spare one that no one had used for years, I grabbed it and booted it up, I was so excited because the first thing I did was download Unity, I went to download it but it said I needed Windows 7 to download it. I then checked my Windows version and I found that I was running a Windows Vista laptop, I was SUPER unhappy when I found this out because I thought my game making career was over. Luckily I have found Game Maker, I am still learning the basics on it but have made some classical games such as pong, Fruit or Die and much more, it would be awesome if someone would like to work on a game with me! If you want to leave your skype down below I will happily add you and we can start programming some games! Thanks for reading!

You know what's a great example of constraints forcing us to be creative? Five nights at Freddy's. Love it or hate it, look at what Scott has done with HIS limits. Look at how he went from trying to make a happy and friendly game like chipper into that simple horror game we all know and love/hate. And it was ONE game after it. Not a big and long incline of success, one game and now almost everyone knows him.

lmfao the thing about the 2d platformer was ME! holy shit. I remember making a level of it, with a circle as the main character, and the terrible collision physics which would cause the circle to clip through the stage and platforms! I did this all in Flash MX. That's right Flash MX (and later, Flash 8). This was before Adobe bought out Macromedia. I used to code in ActionScript 2.0, and when they released 3.0, I just gave up instead of learning the new language! hahaha thanks for reminding me about super circles adventures!
