The Crimson Topaz hummingbird can be found in Brazil, Venezuela, the Guyanas and Suriname. It has an irridescent green throat that shines with shades of gold when illuminated, and black tail streamers crossed and pointing outward. The rest of the hummingbird is shiny red. The female has a dark green back, throat and abdomen with crimson discs on the throat and abdomen. Her tail has violet, green and chestnut colored feathers.
When I photographed this hummingbird a couple of years ago, I only saw a juvenile male that had not grown in his tail feathers. But recently William Orellana was back in Brazil and got some beautiful video footage of the Crimson Topaz and the Fiery Topaz for Hummingbird Spot.
The Fiery Topaz was once considered to be a subspecies of the Crimson Topaz, but there are slight differences in their feathers. And their territory is separated by the Amazon River and the range of the two species does not overlap. The Fiery Topaz has a black hood and a lime green gorget. The tail is bronzy green in the center, and he has the two long tail feathers that cross like an X.
