Күн бұрын

The latest storm to hit the UK and Ireland. Deirdre, arrived on the morning of the 15th and is set to last well into the 16th. For the most part bringing freezing rain, temperatures very close to 0 and very gusty winds.
I was positioned on the T3 Car Park this morning to capture some of the action in the Storm and I was not disappointed, winds were out of the south east, a direct crosswind for MAN & gusting over 30 knots, making for some bumpy approaches. Some great piloting in this video!
Two go arounds in this video, definitely two of my best this year. The first was TAP A320 CS-TNH from Lisbon, the aircraft rolled side to side over the runway, touching down twice before the pilots applied TOGA and climbed away, encountering more harsh gusts as they did. The next aircraft to make an approach, Austrian A321 OE-LBB from Vienna, got as far as 50 feet over the runway before the pilots opted to abort due to being unstable, both aircraft made it down safely second time around
Hope you enjoy this Storm Comp, a full compilation from today will be out shortly!
Thanks for watching!

Uff that TAP GA was amazing. How the f*** can it be that you have sooooo many storms in the UK :D. We never have storms in Germany. It has to be so much fun to see all the go arounds. Well anyways great video as always :)

++FlyingLjas++ We have so many storms here in the UK Due to a number of geological factors - 1. we are an island. 2. we border the Atlantic ocean. 3. we are subject to weather conditions generated by 1 and 2 above. Germany must be a very boring country to live in if it never has storms!

Wonder if any research is available comparing yoke to sidestick. Or whether it’s caused just by limited hand on flying
@harrykarmel4943
@harrykarmel4943 5 жыл бұрын
I expect it’s due to side stick vs yoke rather than hand on flying - the amount of hands on is due to airline SOPs e.g. Flybe requires all landings to be ILS which IMO completely undermines the flight crew, but this is just an example of an airline SOP - so I would have thought it’s due to the sidestick
@AviationUpclose
@AviationUpclose 5 жыл бұрын
Flybe definitely doesn't require all landings to be flown with an ILS, For example at my local airport Liverpool we had a few months where our ILS was out of service, Flybe continued to operate as normal with the Dash 8 and ATR flying RNAV Approaches and VOR DME Approaches as well
@harrykarmel4943
@harrykarmel4943 5 жыл бұрын
AviationUpclose that’s interesting. I recently went on an air cadet course in Dundee and I spoke to the people in ATC there. I got talking to them about previous flights there - Flybe has operated there but EGPN (Dundee) only had ILS in one direction so they cancelled the service. I don’t know if that’s still a regulation but that’s just what they told me

It might seem a lot of fun watching these difficult landings, but they represent the limit of an aircraft's and its flight crew's abilities. Pilot's are only human and their skill varies. Airports should not be built without crosswind runways. Landing directly into a strong wind is far safer than having it at 90 degrees to you
@AviationUpclose
@AviationUpclose 5 жыл бұрын
It's quite uncommon that we get wind from this direction, so most of the time MAN has runways well suited to the prevailing wind direction

I flew into Manchester on Saturday morning (15th December) on a Flybe dash 8 from Southampton, it was like a tumble drier as we came into land, slight delay taking off due to the weather conditions in Manchester and the amount of go arounds, we landed at about 08:30. Although scary I never felt in any danger... but its strange sitting at the back (Row 14) and watching the front of the plane jerking up and down, left and right.

Some pilots were in total control, others over controlled, one flared too high, others insisted on a smooth landing at the risk of landing long.

I think every pilot had control of the aircraft, the wind just had different effects on the different aircraft as well the chance of sudden windshear

Landing in turbulence is like martial arts fighting against an invisible enemy that is trying to kill you. Not all pilots have the same abilities. It is problematic after a long flight on autopilot to wake up the legs and wrist into fighting mode for fast and accurate corrections in a manual landing.
