My question is, pouring from those crucibles by hand how do they insure the exact weight those gold bars are supposed to be? Is there a subsequent process to trim or add more gold to have an exactitude of the weight? Seems like a potentially fallible process. I had imagined that now there would be a mechanized system for doing this and it wouldn't be by hand. How much currency in gold are they paying these techs to make gold bars that is lost every time they do a gold meltdown?

Gold is already pure. Now if your talking about impurities, dirt dust and debris is typically burned off. But most gold is mined as gold flake or dust not as nuggets.

Except no native gold is pure, regardless of whether it is in flake, dust or nugget form. Native purity generally varies from about 16K to maybe 22K. Only some impurities can be burned off. Other have to be removed by other methods, such as dipping off dross after fluxing, electrolysis in an gold cell or by acid/cyanide dissolution.

The gold was not extracted from the jewelry chemically before melting. There will be other metals added to the gold when made into jewelry to make it more robust. just melting it does not separate these. So that large bar was not pure gold.

I'm going to pour me a ounce soon as my back heals. What sucks is if you do it right get 24k pure bar you still have to send it to a refiner to get it melted poured and an assy then they will give you an offer which is better than any scrap offer you will get.
