Love the makeover!! My dad used to own his own home remodeling company and when remodeling our own house he had me help him with a LOT of projects, including putting board and batten (aka wainscoting). What we always did was use a thin sheet of plywood and put that over the existing drywall then nailed the trim ontop and onto the plywood. Not sure if it’s considered “more” correct, but it sure is easier to nail trim onto the plywood instead of finding studs when drilling directly onto the drywall!:)
