I played this at my dad's funeral 3 weeks ago. There was me and my 3 brothers there, i watched him being a fit, Increadibly strong 70 year old ex royal marine who did marathons, and played football with his grand children for hours, And talked about his time in the falklands war. Till a Frail Little man in less than 2 months thanks to covid. RIP Mick AKA best Grandad, AKA best dad AKA my Hero.

Our roles reverse in life. As a child our parents take care of us, they're our heroes, they chase the "monsters" away. As we get older and our parents get older they become child like and it's our turn to chase their "monsters" away. I've lost all my grandparents, and both of my parents. I have one son and one daughter left. My youngest son committed suicide 4 months ago, so I lost another loved one. Your beautiful baby girl, stay strong. It's all we have. 🤗😎😊🤔

Don, the song reminds us to tell the ones important to you to tell them you love them. I just lost the love of my life, and we told one another every day how much we loved one another. Knowing you are dying is tough and full of fear and sadness, and that is what made it hard to for me to chase all the monsters away. I tried and now all I have is memories and sadness. Like you I won't forget and pray the hurt becomes easier to bare. Bless you.

James Blunt wrote this song for his father, Charles Blount, a former cavalry officer in the 13th/18th Royal Hussars, helicopter pilot and colonel in the Army Air Corps. His dad has stage four chronic kidney disease, and this minor-key piano ballad is a tear-stained tribute to his sick father. but he found a donor and is still alive today but when james sang this he thought his dad was dying.

This gets me every time I hear this. It takes me back to 2003 on the night my dad left us. He had a long hard fight with cancer too. I flew to Chicago to spend his last three days with him in hospice. I hope he knew I was there. I’m so sorry for your grandpa and your loss honey. 😞

His dad had stage 4 kidney failure when James wrote this and a donor couldn't be found. After the video was released a distant cousin came forward who was a match. He donated all the profits from this song to Help For Hero's a UK veterans charity (both him and his dad were in the military). They did this in one take and at the end everyone in the studio was crying except James' dad who said 'why all this I'm not gone yet'.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I know how difficult it is. I lost my Dad to prostate cancer in 1999. They didn't have any treatment for the prostate and it metastisized and spread through his whole body. So I'll definitely keep you in my prayers for your peace and comfort.

Friends, please heed the following words: "The time is gone." If you think tomorrow or the next second is guaranteed, you are sadly mistaken. Realize that James was at least able to sing this song to his father who, as I understand it, later recovered. Many are not as lucky. I am one of those unlucky ones. If I could retract the last hateful words I spoke to my father, I surely would. Dad passed away in 2018 and we never spoke again for four years from the time we last fought in 2014. My only hope is that he is now able to hear my words and know my heart from this life to that. If you love them, I implore you, never allow them to wonder. With deep gratitude I bid you peace. I love you, father, and miss you every second of every day. I am sorry.

I know how youre feeling. I lost my grandpa last year due to complications from cancer. He was 84. It was hard but seeing my dad have to go through the trauma of watching his dad deteriorate like that was just awful. This song just brings me back to sitting next to my grandpa's hospital bed, stroking his hair and letting him know that its ok for him to go and how thankful i was for everything he did for our family. I miss him every day but this song reminds me to feel secure in the knowledge that i did my part to chase his monsters away and make his last days less painful.

My relationship with my pops is two parts, from childhood until 15 I was scared of my father as he was strict and hardly ever around due to working overseas 8 months at a time. Seemed to me he would look for faults with his kids the 2 months he was home and I was glad when he would go back to work. Then he asked me to come with him to Japan for the summer, I did and got to know the man that I only new as my father previously. From 16 to 21 I joined him living in Japan, Norway, Singapore, and Brazil from as short as 2.5 months to as much as 1.5 years. I knew the man that was my dad, we shared everything, likes/dislikes, talked music(he was a Buddy Rich guy and I like Carl Palmer), his relationship with his father(I just thought I had it hard) and was with him as he took his last breath holding his hand and chasing his monsters away. I'm so glad I took that opportunity and recommend to anyone, if at all possible, reach out and get to know the man that is your dad.

My dad is my world, my mum and best friend. He has always given me what he could as a single parent of three through long hours and hard work. He taught me right from wrong, how to respect women and enjoy life. He never, ever criticised my life or decisions, he does and has backed me in everything I've done and has always been there for me. My dad is 70 this year and he is in good shape, but like most, he is at that age where bad shit starts to happen and it scares the life out of me. My world will crumble when he is no longer here so I make sure to tell him whenever we talk on the phone or in person that I love him and am always grateful for him. Love your parents and regret nothing about them. Beautiful reaction, thank you.

Tasha...I was reviewing reaction video's on Blunt's song...and as I really enjoy watching reactions from different 'corners' of experience...as I'm a 67 yr old white male...with a gazillion other things that shape how I see and feel. So I had just watched a series of different folks...and yours was in my search list and gave a watch with you. Let me offer a couple things... First...sorry you lost your grandfather before a time you could easily let go and absorb his loss. The whole journey of life is addition of people and subtraction of people...and trying to constantly adjust. Grief...is the emotion of meanings you can't figure out...related to that which is gone...and will be felt until the mind figures out what meanings are hiding that make you feel small in front of the memories of the lost. Secondly, something to think about...is recording yourself as unconstrained, open and honest as you might be...in what you feel and want to express no matter the nature of the raw emotions. People watch to enjoy music and the reaction videos looking for honest, open, transparent human emotions. You watched Blunt's tears...and you couldn't turn yours off...and that is a mark of a great singer and song. My suggestion is to NOT fight your tears...but let them be...as you and James will call people to the tears of their grief yet to be expressed. It is good that you feel emotional input...that touches pain...and you exhale the tears of your grief. Videos are better received when they are the real person, the real you...not the cool...or tough...or stable or whatever you 'don't want to look like' as you keep trying to swallow your tears. The more you make visible what you feel...the more you invite your audience to feel with you...because of you...thanks to you. But be honest. Drama-queens drive people away as do folks fighting too hard to be visible. Many watching...will have lost a grandparent, too. Your tears invite them to breathe their unfinished grief. It's okay to be there with a tissue...and dabbing at tears...but trying to wipe away the tears and keep dabbing to not run makeup...what the audience is watching then is someone fighting for control and image...instead of someone allowing others to revel with you in what you fel and want to share. Be here in this moment...now...without the concern of what others feel and think of you...but that you so delight in sharing your world with others. Breathe that audacity of who you might be. mark

Am I the only one who heard you say ' monsters' with a growl and a little laugh and thought 'you have no idea what you are getting yourself into'? This song is amazing and WILL make you cry...

I feel like this song captures the pain of losing (or nearly losing) those who took care of us when we were children. It's a special kind of loss that brings with a special kind of pain, one that we all inevitably share. It's sad, but because it's also something we all experience, regardless of race, sex, wealth, or political party, there's something profoundly connecting about it. A reminder that we are all only human.
