Eye Contact means not Autistic?

When you go into an #Autism assessment and you list the entire diagnostic criteria to the doctor for being #Autistic but he thinks making eye contact means you can't be autistic.

As a young person in a 14 month waiting list for an assessment, it took me three doctors appointments for them to be convinced I didn't have teenage anxiety at 4.

After multiple months of research, I had come to the conclusion that I likely had autism and ADHD. Finally was brave enough to mention it to my doctor, who referred me to a counselor. Counselor took my and my parents’ testimony and said that I likely had OCD. Told me to schedule an appointment with him to work things out. It’s been five months and we had not mentioned OCD, ADHD, or Austin once and instead keeps going on about how “my desire to become independent and express myself has lead to a strained relationship between me and my mom. 😅

Yeah I had a doctor say something similar to me. Brought it up in therapy later and was told that wasn't necessarily true.

My doctor asked me if I would feel upset if my mother was sick and I said yes and she was like nope! Not autistic.

My autism got diognosed at a later age and I never used it as an excuse for anything I kept it a secret even from my school I did not want any help because I wanted to overcome it instead of being a victim. Now I'm a cybersecurity engineer at one of the biggest banks in my country at 21 years old.

Wow, so sad that this wrong diagnosis comes so quick. I had a friend whose son was autistic. He made eye contact when it was a subject he was enthusiastic about. He found out I loved Sci/fi and he chatted on with me for hours. His mom was baffled. I just hit the right subjects with him.

My son makes eye contact, is super organized and doesn't walk on tippy toes. Alot of people say he doesn't look autistic

Sometimes sensory integration disorders would be wrongly diagnosed as autism. The main difference is in the social aspect.That is why eye contact is critical when it comes to autism diagnosis

Eye contact is just as a common as no eye contact when it comes to autism and socializing can come in the form of being over social, or low social, Over social as unaware of personal space, talking a million miles an hour about a million different subjects they find interesting. Over touching people, absolutely no understanding of personal space. And it can be completely opposite to that also. My son is in the middle but if triggered will go to the no social end
