As a shooter , I’m right handed, left eye dominate. When I lineup the sights, everything is fine. But when I’m practicing maneuvering behind cover, and my pistol isn’t directly below my left eye (like normal) , I noticed I get double vision , and will see two of my sites, until I either close one or, or move my head and line up the sights under my dominate eye. It’s almost like each eye is sending different pictures to my brain, and my brain is trying to combine them, so I end up with two of everything because both eyes are trying to focus. If that makes semse

I was right-eye dominant before I had a detached retina a few years ago. Since my right eye never recovered fully, it would see objects about 20% farther away, giving me a horrible double vision. I've recently been trying to become left-ey dominant and have found that covering my damaged eye for a few hours per day with a patch, my left eye is becoming the dominant one and some of the double vision is slowly improving. I am right handed and have always been right-eye dominant. So far this training has been amazing and I hope it continues to improve. Hope this might be helpful to someone else suffering from the same problem.

For me, making the triangle and pulling it forward made the test more apparent. Playing pool I didn't pay attention to eye dominance. For years, I always looked down the barrel of the cue with my right eye. I recently found I was left eye dominate. Wow, what a difference. I wish Al Gore would have discovered the internet 20 years earlier.

None of these work for me. I just see double my hand, or double my thumb or whatever, and can "choose" which one I'm using to use to centre or blot out. So I can "make" my left eye dominant, or my right eye dominant. But if I need to close one eye (like when it's very sunny), I always close my right and use my left because it feels more comfortable.

I'm down this eye dominance rabbit hole now and have the exact same answer, to no avail. It's very frustrating. I don't get it. I don't understand how everyone else gets it and it's so simple to them. If I focus on a distant object and hold up my thumb, my thumb appears twice in my vision and I can see through both thumbs. I can then "choose" which thumb to cover the object with. If I focus on my thumb, the object farther away now appears twice, and I "choose" which one to cover with my now opaque thumb. Same thing with the triangle hand hole. Either two objects if I'm focusing on my hands or two holes if I'm focusing on the object.
@Kislay113 жыл бұрын
@@zacharybroussard3765 that does happen to me but in these comments I did found a way which includes checking which eye do you instinctively close when you suddenly go to bright place after coming out of dark room. My instinct closes my right eye, so ig I am left eye dominant (although it's dependent on instinct, because if you start thinking consciously you can close either one) But apart from this thing I can always chose which eye to look from and have almost the same vision the both of them

I'm confused, with the first triangle and closing eye method, i did it multiple times and both eyes ended up being the dominant one. When moving the triangle to my face, it went straight into the middle and on my nose. Finally, with the thumb method, when I put my thumb in front of the distant object, if i focussed on the object i'd see 2 of my thumb and the dominant eye depended on which version of my thumb i moved in front of the object. And when focussing on my thumb, the distant object became to blurry to make out where i should place my thumb. Equal eyes? No dominance? Idk

@@DoctorEyeHealth It's going really good. The tumor from ocular melanoma was discovered on New Year's Eve and on February 22nd of this year I had my left eye removed. I kept all of my depth perception and I went right back to surfing and doing all the things I did in the past. There's only two bummer things. One is my tumor was a class 2, which means my chance of it metastasizing in my liver or lungs over the next 5 years is about 72%. That's what makes ocular melanoma so insidious. Losing the eye was not that big of a deal. Psychologically that's the easy part. The other bummer is mt persistent Phantom Eye syndrome. I see a translucent kaleidescope pattern across my field of vision all the time. It's most noticeable when I'm tired or I'm relaxing my eyes. And it's less noticeable when I'm concentrating on something. Hopefully it will go away someday. But overall life is good and I'm kicking ass with one eye!

This doesn't make sense to me. When you focus on a distant object you get 2 blurry versions of your hands in front of you, allowing you to make either eye dominant. Take the thumb test. If you give a thumbs up in front of you, as soon as you focus on a distant object you will see 2 thumbs in front of you. If you align one of those "copies" with the distant object it can appear as if you're left eye dominant but if you align the other thumb "copy" with the object it will appear as if you're right eye dominant. Can you explain this inconsistency with the test? This also applies to the hand triangle test but it's harder to explain in a comment.

When I attempt this I just see a double image of the hand triangle. I can't center the object in both triangles so I put the object in the intersecting area of the two triangles, and as I start closing up the triangle, the intersecting area between the two gets smaller and smaller and inevitably I get to the point where I have to decide which triangle stays with the object and picking one over the other just seems arbitrary

Maybe I'm just slow, but saying "the eye that is more significantly blurred is the eye that is dominant". That seems a perfectly confusing statement to me. If you cover the right eye, and can see really well with the left, and then you cover the left eye with the right eye uncovered, and the vision is blurred (i.e. the right eye's vision is more blurry than the left), are we saying that the RIGHT EYE (the blurry eye) is dominant? i.e. Are we saying that we're inherently stronger in our non-dominant eye? Or are you saying that whatever blurry eye is covered, the one you're using to see with (the non-blurry eye that is clear) is the dominant eye? For me, I just "don't get" the hold-your-hands-up method. When I focus on a distant object, and then raise my hands, I see two sets of my hands, each with a hole and each parallel to the object I'm focusing on. If I focus on my hands, then I have two of the object in the distance. So centering the hole is a matter of choosing which hole I want to use. Same with the thumb test. If I focus on a distant object no bigger than my thumb width, and then raise my thumb, I see the one object with two thumbs in the foreground, exactly parallel to that distant object. If I move one thumb over it, I still see the object. If I move the other over it, I continue to see the object. So the blurry/not-blurry test seems more relevant to me.

When I'm not wearing glasses, my left eye is dominant. I can function pretty well without glasses - I can drive without them, it's just more tiring, etc. My right eye is however definitely my worse eye - I have mild myopia in both eyes, but in my left eye I have barely-there astigmatism (pretty much the lowest measurable amount), but in my right eye I have astigmatism that's actually noticeable (still relatively mild though). I find that when I'm wearing my glasses - meaning, my eyes have pretty much equal sight - I no longer have a consistently dominant eye; it's pretty random what results an eye dominance test will give me. Also, if I do the triangle test and it shows my right eye as dominant, I can unfocus and then refocus my eyes so that my left eye becomes the dominant one instead (and vice versa).

I am right handed and I am very left eye dominant. I have a astigmatism in my right eye which is probably why my brain prefers to utilize my left eye more. It definitely affects sports where you are sideways, such as tennis and baseball. I teach tennis and I am perplexed why some students just can not hit a one hand backhand well. So many good athletes can't that I suggest learning a two hand backhand instead since anyone can learn that, and you are less sideways. I can hit a solid one hand backhand with my non dominant arm but not my dominant. It is because of my eyes. Cross dominance.

Hey - ok I have a crucial question that I’ve never gotten an answer to: So... You’re trying to center an object in the triangle you made with your thumbs and index fingers... If My hands are in focus the object is doubled. If the object is in focus my triangle is doubled. OR... they’re both doubled. And then If I close one eye the object simply shifts to one side of my triangle - and Visa-Versa What do YOU see? Also - are you able to look at a word on a piece of paper and then consciously shift from making one eye dominant and then the other? Thank you! What do YOU see???

@someguy84434 ай бұрын
This sounds kinda like bs. I can choose which eye my mind "sees" through, and even if you arent aware of it you can too. Your mind does it automatically when you block vision in one eye, but you dont have to block your vision to do this. You can choose to focus with either eye, or even with both at once. Hold your thumb out and look past them into the distance, you'll see two thumbs. The same is true for the triangle method as well, you'll see two wholes in your hand(s). This one tricks the brain a little though and melds the two perspectives of your hands into a single hand with extra parts. Practice changing your minds focus on either thumb or both simultaneously, switching between the options. By blocking an object with one of the apparent thumbs you change which eye will still be able to see when one is closed.
@t0asty.pvppy_4 жыл бұрын
Oh by the way I have a question! Since you’re an eye doctor I’d think you’d know so, how long does it take to change your dominant wearing an eye patch? I would think it would take a long time. But I wanted to know how effect are eye patches for changing eye dominance

Is this normal? My eyes when I do the first test, it's my right eye and when I do the second test, it's my left eye. I even tried two different objects. It's really hard because my eyes can't seem to look right at it without changing after I put my hands up. I tried without my glasses on, but it changed at random and my eyes still change when my hands "zoom" in on the object. Edit: also, when I put my thumb out I see 2...what the heck. Aaaand, if I focus on my thumb, then the object is doubled (and blurred, obviously lol).

dont understand; When im focusing on the object, the triange formed with my fingers is double, because im not focused on my hands
@DoctorEyeHealth2 жыл бұрын
Yes! That is called physiological diplopia. You want to quickly move the hands and go with the one you prefer first.

Ehhhh... I’m left handed, but I was kinda curious about my eye dominance; whenever I do the finger test, either my thumb duplicates, or when I focus on my thumb, anything in the background duplicates, and when I try the triangle with my hands, I end up struggling to center the object, as it slightly duplicates and makes difficult to center, but when I DO center it, and close my eyes, it kinda goes both ways to where I can’t see the object with either eye, does this mean that I don’t have an eye dominance? Sorry if the comment seems a bit difficult to understand, it’s a bit hard to explain; but if you do end up seeing this comment, could I receive a little context? I’m a bit curious

Thank you Doctor. Just discovered I'm left eye dominant and shoot right handed. Have some work to do.
@holycrusader42054 жыл бұрын
This video was made a while ago, but I still want to comment this. When doing these dominant eye tests my right eye is dominant, but when aiming through a scope I use my left eye since I can see much better and its easier to keep my left eye open rather than my right eye, and this confuses me since your usually supposed to look though a scope with your dominant eye. (I'm right handed)

Is there a relation between eye dominance and myopia/astigmatism? I have a higher degree of myopia in my left(dominant) eye than my right one, but i have astigmatism in the right and none in the left. Also, i notice that when the sun or a bright light hits my face, i close my dominant eye and keep the other one open
@DoctorEyeHealth4 жыл бұрын
That is a really good question. Unfortunately, I am not sure. I also close one eye when in bright sunlight. It is believed that people with high exophorias tend to close one eye in bright lights.
@davigurgel20404 жыл бұрын
@@DoctorEyeHealth interesting. Completely unrelated, but can you explain why lenses make it harder to see at a close distance? I am using a contact lense in only one eye, because the other has fallen when i was putting it, and when i am looking at my phone or reading i can only see with the eye that has no lenses

Thank you so much for making this, very helpful. I’m a newer shooter and I thought that maybe I’ve been using the wrong eye. Afraid not, gotta keep practicing.

Is there a way to change eye dominance for example I'm left eye dominant but I want to be right eye dominant
@DoctorEyeHealth5 жыл бұрын
I like to think you could...perhaps with vision therapy...but I am not 100% sure. That would be an interesting study.

I had cataract surgery in my left eye. I have good vision but I am near sighted. This is my dominant eye. I have a cataract in my right eye but not sure whether to go with distance vision in that eye. Everything I have read is that it is preferable to have good distance vision in your dominant eye and near vision in non-dominant. I would have the opposite. Considering PRK for left eye to switch to distance vision before cataract surgery on right eye. How important is it to have good distance vision in the dominant eye versus the opposite?

Well, I can't cover things up with my thumb, as my thumb is transparent. If I do the triangle test, if I close either eye, the item is cut in half.
@DoctorEyeHealth4 жыл бұрын
You're probably thinking too much about it, try to do it quickly and off your first natural instinct.

@@DoctorEyeHealth no, that's what happens either way, each eye seems to be seeing half the image

When i close my left eye its not only off center but its completely out of the triangle, such a huge difference. Does this mean anything else in particular ?
@F17A5 жыл бұрын
I find it impossible to frame the object in the center without focusing on one eye. Does that mean I’m cross-eyed dominant? Edit: I tried focusing on my hands rather than focusing on the object and it worked!

My right eye has exotropia but the school evalation in January 2021 said it is my dominant eye . I thought - Left eye will be dominant eye because I have exotropia in my right eye. Tests (expect for magnify glasses) - I have got both eyes as dominant . Did I used any correctives ? Glasses - nearsightedness for both lenses and corrective lenses in my right eyes . Patching (2012- 2013 , 2020) Vision therapy (2012- 2013) I didn't have any problems for seeing things far until I was 11 years old . I know also had poor depth perception 6th : no depth perception 7th : 1 depth perception I do belief it is a higher depth perception because I am no longer scared of excualavators or stairs . I not perfect depth perception but better than what it is was in the past . I will not know until Sep 1st , 2023 about the changes of my prescription glasses .

I have read online of people using wet ones wipes for their blepharitis and crusts at the Base of the eyelashes . ..however I am unsure whether it's safe or not and if it could work for me, what would you say ?
@DoctorEyeHealth5 жыл бұрын
I am unsure if those are approved for eyecare use. I know Burts Beese form of wet ones is approved for eyelids. My concern would harsh chemicals getting into the eye or damaging the skin.

you can also tell eye dominance by the ear dominance never encountered a person with a different ear dominance to their eye also I noticed a pattern since I got interested in eye dominance most lefties are right eyed

what if I get double vision? Like with the thumb test I see two thumbs when focusing on the target, and two targets when focusing on the thumb.

How does eye dominance develop? Can it be changed?
@DoctorEyeHealth5 жыл бұрын
The dominant eye has more neural connections in the brain. This could be due to many reasons. Lesser prescription in that eye, more use of that eye starting at a young age..perhaps better alignment of that eye during the first few months of life. There is also some evidense about the shape of blue-cone free zones within the retina... In theory, it would seem likely that you could change the dominance...but probably very difficult to do. Like training yourself to be left handed after 20 years of being right handed, and vise versa.

I'm left eye dominant. My left eye see better when there's light but my right eye sees better in the dark is that normal? Also why some people are left and others are right eye dominant? Why doesn't both eyes work equally with every people?
@beachboardfan95445 жыл бұрын
Awesome vid 👍 I'm right handed but do not have a dominate eye, dunno if its because I had LVC but, not having a dominate eye has caused me quite a bit of trouble as I do several types of competitive shooting. Since identifying the problem, I have to shoot with a piece of scotch tape on my safety glasses over my left eye to occlude it, but not alter the amount of light it receives because of sympathetic reflex. Struggled for years until I had a friend whos an assistant at a local eye doctor, ask me some questions while we were shooting skeet, and he was able to identify that I was struggling to see one sight picture and subsequently didn't have a dominate eye. The scotch tape makes all the difference in the world, it greatly improved my game, and I'm super grateful for the knowledge eye doctors have and share.
