What you are saying about cost of living in California. My daughter and son in law live in the Bay Area. Both have PhD from Stanford and hold good jobs, they can’t afford to buy a house. Currently they are renting a very small house in Redwood City, for $4,500.00 per month. Glad you are letting others know the truth.

Starting salary of $150 k for assistant professor at a small university in rural Ohio--- that sounds like an incredible package !...i have many friends who joined as assistant professor at better known universities and their starting salaries are much lower in the range of $60k-115 k which is consistent with glassdoor national averages.

Regardless of overall cost of living, the absolute amount one saves is way higher in a 150k+ job in Cali/NY vs 80k in Atl

No, actually, if you see the poverty line foe bay area, it is...get ready for it... $120,000. So you probably dont wanna live on poverty line or even double the poverty line, right? It should be 4 or 5 times higher than poverty line for a good lifestyle, so you save more in dallas.
@SHAMWOW388
@SHAMWOW388 4 жыл бұрын
absolutely agreed by $ amount. Maybe not so in % but possible still. However what happens at the end of the day is , whatever you saved thats only worth where you are living. Did you save $100K (1 year of expenses in dallas) if you save $30K thats one year of living expenses in atl. SO i would say in a ratio if you are not planning to move after saving then you might save more but it might be same or lower in proportion to your cost of living.

Even if you make 150k in Bay area which is about 7k per month, it's ok. You can stay in a lavish apt. with a friend in a 2bhk with $1500 per person in Santa Clara. You can finance/lease a model 3 for about 800. Food take max 1k. You would still have about 4k savings. Money is an important factor but lifestyle, nightlife, roads, weather, travelling and outdoor activities is pretty good in Cali. This is a real life example. Saying 150k being not enough in Bay area is not exactly true.

Sir, you've explained very nicely so that students can make informed decisions before selecting a particular university in a particular state. You've shown the reality which no other KZbinr shows with the comparison and all. Thanks for doing it. Hope to see you bring in more informative videos. Can you make a video on l1a and l1b visa? I agree with all your points. Having lived in Atlanta as well as the Bay area, I would any time choose the Bay area above ATL. I think when you are starting your career, it is important to choose the type of work you are getting over the money. Once you are in the land of opportunities, with experience money will always come by. Indians are generally hardworking and most of them understand the importance of savings. One saves enough which they won't be able to spend also. Moving to the Bay area in your early years is always easier rather than making the transition at the later stage of life. When you are a fresher, you are motivated. The Bay area gives you so many opportunities to thrive. I agree it is a bit expensive but totally worth it.

Sir, I have a few friends who work at Google- from what I understand is that $250,000 (1.7 crore) is not always per annum This includes several components - ( One time joining bonus + Stock options held over 5 to 10 years) and these are not paid every year. Could you please shed some light on these aspects as well and please do correct me if I am wrong.
@thebroadcastTV7
@thebroadcastTV7 3 жыл бұрын
Stock options are split over 5 years. Signing bonus is one time either paid upon joining (most), paid half when you sign and half when you join (fb), paid over 2 years of working(amazon) ranges from 10-100k. Rsu grants are usually 30-200k. Distributed over 4 years usually evenly. So total comp first year is high then second year is lesser because no signing bonus. When people talk about total comp they usually are excluding signing bonus. Indian media includes it.

FYI, apple ka headquarters Palo Alto mein nahin Cupertino pei hyan...also this cost of living calculator comparison is a bogus yardstick to compare salaries/style of living. If you maintain a conservative lifestyle in cupertino and make a salary of 250-300k/year at suppose FB, you can save 100-150k/year; much more that you can actually make in georgia/ohio/texas. And if you invest that savings wisely, the compounded effect of that investment is way more than that you can possibly make in any other part of the US. No wonder California has the highest no of multi-millionaires in the whole world...
@KaranDwivedi
@KaranDwivedi 4 жыл бұрын
While base salary comparisons might be true, there are huge advantages of the bay. In tech companies you mentioned a large component is equity in the company. The second major component is opportunity cost. There are way too many companies in the bay per sq ft than any other place on earth :) If you want to leverage location arbitrage then earn in the bay and then moving on later to an inexpensive place might also make sense.
@prat534

This is a one sided story. Housing is really expensive but 200k in bay area can still buy you a lot and no it does not take you 12-15 years to save up 1 year worth of expenses.
@DesiAmericanProfessor
@DesiAmericanProfessor 4 жыл бұрын
the same 200k outside of the bay area, can you a lot lot more. You must also take in to account inflation. Bay area inflation is higher than the national average. So each year your living expenses go higher. In fact, I was being conservative when I said 12-15 years.
@prat534
@prat534 4 жыл бұрын
Untrue. Atleast for software engineers, the amount of opportunities Bay Area offers and the kind of income you make is great in Bay Area. Someone with 1-2 year experience can easily make 200k in bay area and for married couple who mostly buy homes that is a 400k Income which definitely rises exponentially with time. A million $ house on 20% down payment would be around 5k mortgage so including other expenses if you have 12k/month expense and the couple would make 23k/month after tax. So no it does not take 12-15 years to save up an years worth of Emergency funds.

Lots of valid points but a couple of things to clarify about living in CA: - not everyone has a 2 hr commute (in fact most people don’t) - home prices weren’t as inflated 10 years ago so if you’d moved here then, homes were still quite affordable (pricier than most of America but affordable nonetheless) - grocery prices are on par with the rest of the country (CA is primarily an agricultural economy) - if you’re working in tech, you can easily job hop without uprooting yourself and your family to a new town - Apple’s HQ is in Cupertino and not Palo Alto 😊
@Randomguy-bk8pb

Valid points. I know I can’t buy a house in bay are any sooner. But still couldn’t think about moving out of Bay Area by looking at the opportunities. most importantly I feel I get indian life in American standards here. I lived in Atlanta too. Can’t even compare the quality of life in Atlanta and Cupertino. I lived in Boston as well, where I had to change my life style completely, over the time i got used to it and happy too, but yeah , life in Bay Area for an Indian family is something else.

Salaries are given according to location. Nobody gets 150k in Texas with few years of experience where as it is common or standard for a new grad with 0 experience to get 150 k in bay area. At the end it comes to how much you are saving and at the max it comes to 500-1000$ difference in paycheck for month in LCOL area but this difference is compensated in HCOL area with good weather and opportunities. For Americans/PR above argument may be true because they need a home to stay whereas those who are on visa they can rent a place and no need to buy 1M$+ houses in HCOL areas

Not accurate data. I have lived in different parts of USA and now in bay area. Bay area is expensive because everyone wants to be here for the opportunities it provides. The industry knows about the cost of living and they pay you accordingly based on your talent. If you got more salary offered in Ohio compared to bay area, that is because you didn't negotiate well. Also, bay area is not for academicians, but for engineers working in software and semiconductor companies, who gets paid well. Please give accurate information.

Why are people misunderstanding the message. The title itself gives it away. Let me repeat it for you what this video is really about. India media converts salary in a super expensive place that is paid US dollars to rupees and projects it to create drama. This is what we are trying to debug. When seen in the true context, the starting salary is just a hype.

IITs are most prestigious institutions in India which offer world class education to our Indians at lowest. If I mean world Class - alumni base in all the FAANG companies nd also in research ! U didn't expose the reality, typically u could have just said that 1.5cr converted into dollars is average salary here in usa ! But we are not so rich . We belong to the upper caste strata from west Bengal and my father earns about 30000 rupees a month. Is there full scholarship at Stanford?? Even paying 10000 dollars would not be possible for me any hope sir??

As some one who stayed at bangalore and now California, it is unbelievable how misleading some if your data is ! E.g. you claimed 2 Cr. At bay area equals 15 lakhs salary in Bangalore. Well, it is not !! 2 cr. Is almost 300K. Which is very respectable salary at bay area (in terms of standard of living). 15 lakhs in Bangalore is peanuts !

Found the “facts and numbers” to be misleading. You’re missing out on the opportunity cost of coming to Bay Area where your equity and stock options might make you a millionaire over night. Another thing that was misleading was the parking cost anecdote. If you are working in Santa Clara you don’t go to park your car in San Francisco (since SF is more than 40 miles away from Santa Clara). Parking would probably be free since there is ample space for malls, shopping complexes and other businesses. Also no city in Bay Area has a downtown for weekend partying or shopping that anyone is going to spend on parking.

So cost comparison professor has shown works for new immigrants and H1B. But cost comparison does not work for white Americans. Here is the reason. Why is California so expensive? Who and what actually made California so expensive? Three things: High state taxes, high gas prices, and high housing prices. Why are state taxes so high? It is the maintenance cost. If anything breaks in California, it will be fixed in few days. I lived in Oklahoma for 4.5 years. If a part of road breaks, it will not be fixed for 8 months. If a street light goes out, it will not be replaced for 4 months. When earthquake demolished many freeways in Los Angeles, it was fixed so fast, people could not believe it. Same repair job in Oklahoma would have taken many years. Sure, Texas and Georgia may be better than Oklahoma, but it would be a joke to say that they are as good as California. I know for sure that they are not. Ok, why houses are so expensive in California? The power couple(both husband and wife having top notch jobs) from entire southern United states and midwest would move to California, because of its top notch education, starting from kindergarten and to Ph. D., and medical school. They do not care how much a home costs. They want the best schools for their children. That increases median price of homes, and price of all homes. Why is gas is so expensive in California? It is done on purpose, so people drive less, to reduce the pollution and push people to buy alternate fuel cars, like hybrid and electric. I saw education in Oklahoma. It is a joke. I agree Texas and Georgia are better, but nothing compared to California. California is made expensive by white Americans having best earning in the world, and having best income by both wife and husbands. Immigrants would be hard pressed to afford that.
@satishsinghal101

More Facts about California: 1. Largest number of Nobel Prize winners in a state in America. 2. Vegetarian food is actually cheaper than Oklahoma, where you can never even get sweet oranges. 3. Most inexpensive and highest quality Indian food. 4. Best medical practitioners, and best doctors on the planet earth. 5. Very low gun crimes and homicides, compared to Oklahoma and Texas. Gun control is quite tough, may be toughest in the country. In Oklahoma, possibly your chances to be killed by a gun homicide, or accidental shooting are highest in all 50 states. 6. Relatively, clean politics, because, no state governmental elected official can serve more than two terms in any one elected office. 7. Every position of significance is an elected position. All school board of governors for school, colleges, and universities in Oklahoma are appointed by Governor by his cronies. They are all elected in California. California is a true democracy, which I cannot say about pseudo democracies in Texas, Georgia, and Oklahoma, where every device is found to block minorities from voting. 8. Best consumer protection laws in the nation. It is very hard for charlatans to rip you off in California. It is somewhat easier to do so in Oklahoma and Texas. I know that lot of these factors are not important to immigrants. But, once Indians become citizen, they worry about all these things. So cost to cost comparison leaves out all these factors, which are important to US citizens.

yes, you are right. But please notice that the 100k I mentioned one could save was just on rent alone. Everything else is dirt cheap in midwest too. People are misinterpreting the video. Bay Area became expensive because of the great opportunities given to the residents to grow and become rich. if one is talented I don’t know why he/she should leave Bay Area to save on rents etc. after all Bay are economy is giving enough growth in salaries to compensate these savings anyways. and 3500-4000 rent applies only in SFO city.

I bet if you try harder you can get apartments for slightly cheap also. it all depends on where you look. simple internet research wont help here. again as i mentioned if one is talented enough to compete and survive in bay area sky only is limit. lets not destroy a beautiful tech eco system built by many talented engineers by spreading false info.

@@DesiAmericanProfessor and for a person who takes career serious why would he/she wants to leave bay area unless there is another place with equal opportunities? and bay area is crowded for a good reason. people are getting enough opportunists here to grow and survive. that explain the traffic issue.
