When humans first started to farm crops, the human ego also started to crop up. Because we needed to plan for future harvests, we stopped being present and started living in time. We needed to track the days and the seasons, but we lost sight of the present moment. Cities began to grow, but so did our egos. These imaginary egos began to puff out their chests, and competition became the name of the game. We started to live more and more in our heads and less and less in the real world.
Not long after, we invented a new thing called war and it seemed to really catch on. We cut down beautiful forests in exchange for shiny metal, and this made our egos feel very very good… for a short time. But soon that pride wore off, revealing an emptiness underneath. And so our egos were never satisfied, always forcing us to do more, achieve more, and consume more.
For millennia, spiritual teachers taught us how to free ourselves from the ego. Monasteries and ashrams flourished as their sacred respite became increasingly needed. But, over the last 15 years there has been a seismic shift in the psyche of our civilization. Today, instead of living in our head, we’re living online. Instead of shedding that egoic false identity, we are creating online personas and avatars. We have split the ego in two, creating an extra obstacle towards discovering our true self.
In our latest KZbin documentary film, Digital Ego, we explore the nature of these newfound digital egos, what affect they are having on us, and how we can break free from them so we can live more fully, more authentically, and with more meaning and joy.
Also out now, a new book on the subject that goes into more depth so we can all make sure that technology serves us, and not the other way around. Get your copy of Digital Ego, the book, now on available on Amazon.

Human beings have had egos since the dawn of man. Today, with social media and online personas, now we have digital egos too. Our psyche is split in two, we live for the “gram” and we crave Likes and Follows. In my book, Digital Ego, I explore the nature of these newfound digital egos, what effect they are having on us, and how we can break free from the screens so we can live more fully, more authentically, and with more meaning and joy. I still read books, go to theaters, seek out live music and walk in nature😇😇😇 however the time I’ve spent on KZbin has connected me to many inspiring beautiful souls I will likely never meet irl.... even though it’s only through technology, I love you Todd and feel your presence in the world🙏😍🌱🌎🔥🎯💫🧘‍♀️

I live alone, in woods, except for pets. I have one friend I talk to. I watch KZbin. Even when I try to join in conversations and say something nice I get attacked. Probably get attacked for this. Oh course the attacks are 'nicer' these days. I have a condition that saps my energy. I take care of myself, pets and my bit of land I am here to watch over. I talk to the trees. I wish people wouldn't keep saying there is something wrong with being alone! I did my social bit in life and now choose to be here. My body is older but my essence is forever young.

Hi Todd, I’m still among your followers, loving your calming voice and presence. Interestingly over the past months I found myself slowly leaving ‘That Platform’. Previously I told myself it was to stay connected to old friends, all friends. Then I told myself it was to set an example during Covid lockdown, I took up watercolors again and encouraged others to find a joy while being alone. Now I’m approaching my 79th birthday, and life has flown through decades. I know the truths now and everyone’s truth is their own. Love myself by living my own life. I can refuse events, parties, politics, religions and even people who are annoying. And I do. I live a life that is as full as I want it to be, I’ve found the truth of my being was within me and nowhere else.

It's all about looking outwards. Living through the mind exclusively. Projection. Discrimination. Judgements. False identification. It's all about division instead of oneness. This can't be undone without shifting our attention from outside to inside. Paying attention to our own being; with no evaluation. It's that simple, and that difficult because of the entrenched habit of looking outwards. The mind is division. Awareness is Oneness. Learn to stop. Bring awareness to whatever you are doing. That's my two cents! 🕉

When I am listening your words.. They are so nature and real. We really lost us in this things, money, material, ego.. Capitalism, system, competition.. So, we forgot our basic. I do not blame anyone. We were all born in this state, we all slowly reveal our original, actual state, we all need a little encouragement, we all slowly open and listen our hearts, become aware, wake up and finally ask and say to ourselves, just what happened to us. However, this process is gradual, everyone does it individually. All I can do now is to be awake and to be kind, real, authentic honest.. Not to be afraid or lost, not to worry about past and be afraid of the future. Not to be sad, but to live with balance smile on my face, with open eyes and by being aware of everything as some incredible part of presence of which I am.

I had huge issues with getting involved with social media. However, during covid I did because of how isolated I was. Also, the death of my love really hit me very hard. In my case i absolutely disregard and do not accept fake or negative comments or photos. In general I feel you are correct about how fake people are about portraying their lives. It is also a matter of personal judgement. More and more I have cut social media from my life. Though, there are very positive things in the social media world. You can learn to do just about anything. Also, you can get advice about just about anything. It is a tool with many positive things. Many people just choose the negative aspects as they do in life. Thankyou for making this video. We are not meant to interact entirely with machines.

If you have a need to stay in touch, I do so one-to-one on WhatsApp (there are various chat & media Apps available) so that you can avoid a lot of the traps, negativity & marketing that takes place on social media. I always thought Facebook was a stalker's paradise & that my own privacy was sacrosanct to me. I used Twitter for about a year, but ditched it when I realised I was spending too much time on it (and also getting angry 🫣) I was a consumer insights analyst and understood full well what social media's 'black heart' and purpose was. I disengaged from it in the inception days already. I may have 'missed out a lot' in terms of not being able to keep in touch with friends. But my nearest & dearest I retain daily contact with & my friends whom I haven't seen in 6 years since moving country, we are all still in contact & seek quality time to chat, engage, support, care & share on WhatsApp.

I have never owned a cellular phone, & I never will. Toward the end of my employment years, I had a few jobs where the company required the carrying of a phone provided by them during hours on the job so they could contact me as necessary. I went along with that but refused to make any personal use of the thing or to take it home or with me off the property when I was clocked out & on my own time. Over time, I've been disbelieved more often than not when I tell this to anyone. As the fact that I am not bullshitting starts to sink in with someone, I can always see the confusion & befuddlement take over as they visibly appear to be thinking, "Oh my god, how can he live like that?". Many times, the person will then settle in to go on to say that they wish they could "get away with that" & how wonderful they think it must be to do so. Or they will say things like, "That means 'they' don't even know you are here, right now; 'they' can't track you around like 'they' do the rest of us.". But when I simply suggest they just turn it off, leave it in a drawer, or even just shut it down & throw it away I watch their faces cloud over & those notions discarded out of hand. Whatever ..... I have a sister who I hadn't seen or had any contact (for various reasons) with in over 13 years. Last spring, she & her husband & their 2 grown children came for a visit. She took a lot of photographs while they were here &, one evening, when I mildly stated that I did not want anything of my son or me or our house to be posted to her voluminous Facebook pages, she took immediate offense & began to fight me on the issue. Things immediately got out of hand. I truly believe that I could have spoken with disfavor or even abusively toward her kids & gotten a less volatile or relentless response than what I got for airing, in my own home, my views on most peoples' addictive & interminable social media practices, & my refusal to take part in the same. Two long days later they left, & we have had no word or association with each other since. Not only was her attachment to Facebook the thing that she was willing to cling to over & above her wish to re-establish relations with me & her nephew, but she also felt compelled to "sneak" in a shot that did somewhat include my child among all the others she'd posted. Maybe she didn't understand how seriously I take all of this & told herself I'd make some allowances, but the fact is that my feelings & point of view were not what meant anything & she could not do otherwise; her self-imposed digital master would allow for no less. And we, here where I live, are better off without.

Hate being in company when people get their phones out, it’s so inconsiderate, even worse some of them in the same room I’ve been in together, message each other. Seriously offensive. I leave because there’s nothing there for me & the two messaging each other within the group are beyond my understanding.

YES!!! Thanks you so much for putting these 'counter understandings' out there in such an easily intelligible way. Todd, you have a great perspective, having been an adman, of how creative/media agencies literally dream up and create marketing which is designed to constantly intrude on our lives, as frequently as possible, & which is crafted to create needs & 'addictions' that we otherwise would never have bothered about. These campaigns are paid for & crafted by marketer's throwing $100millions at their campaigns annually. You, Todd, well know that, but most others don't really give it much thought. We have become habitualised so we don't recognise it for what it is. Social Media (all media) & the algorithms/research that provide 'intel' to weaponise our own behaviours against us in terms of ensuring we are bombarded by marketer's messages everywhere, crafting 'herd mentality' and prompting you to spend spend spend or constantly desire more & more & more. It thereby throws the individual into a state of lack, financial stress, worrying about things like physical acceptability & status ..... Social media literally creates a herd mentality & then constantly tells us as individuals that to 'belong' we need to 'comply' and 'mirror' in some way. But it is purely a Capitalist tool designed to impoverish the individual. Financially, mentally, undermine individual worth & undervalue individual/unique abilities. These are fictions designed by capitalist marketers to ensure they leverage as much of our available financial means as possible. The entire system is so corrupt, so heartless, so all encompassing that the individual needs to really stare the Beast in face and know it for what it is. One can control what one engages in on the internet to maximise personal development, knowledge, compassion - but even then one is 'delivered' several marketing messages with uninvited sub-conscious messaging - so every engagement with the internet is kinda an obstacle challenge for one's sense of self & peace. Thanks for telling people clearly how real & insidious it is in bald-faced reality. The individual has been reduced to simply a source of revenue.

This phone ain’t my family pardon the grammar this phone ain’t my friend or co-worker and any other form of life. It’s just a device that gives information some communication and anxiety wow ! Where are we?

This is a genuine question and I am not trying to prove or point anything. But when you do these videos of yourself and talking about what you talk (which I like and listen by the way) aren’t you afraid that they get into your own head and turn into a hidden ego? Something like,”look at me, see how calm I am. This is the truth…” I noticed when I explained my way meditation and feel of serenity to others, if I am not careful gets into my own head so I stopped doing that.

I REFUSE to join the social media blaaaa since day one it started, as thankfully I could see what’s happening. tv has become pants. I watch in wonderment at people in public all stuck with their faces to a miniature screen like nothing else is in the wold but them and it . Will the human race learn to let go and live. 👍🤷‍♀️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
