Note that there are effectively two flaps types on the F-14: manoeuvring flaps and auxiliary flaps. The AUX Flaps are the inner portions of the flaps and are set via the flap handle only, extending when the flap lever is set to more than 5 degrees: the AUX Flaps can only be full up or full down. The Manoeuvring flaps can be controlled by the DLC system (rotary wheel on the stick) and can be set to any desired position: their current position is indicated on the wheels-flaps position indicator in the pilot cockpit. The MANOEUVRE flaps also automatically deploy at lower speeds to compensate for the change in lift (and retract at higher speeds). All the flaps should automatically retract when sweeping the wings (and will become unavailable): the AUX flaps are disabled beyond 21 degrees of wing sweep, whilst the MANOEVER flaps are disabled beyond 50 degrees of wing sweep. The BOMB wing sweep mode sets the wings to a fixed 55 degrees as you explained and thus prevents all flaps from (automatically) deploying: the BOMB mode is thus super handy when doing air-to-air refuelling, to prevent the MANOEUVRE flaps from automatically deploying and messing up your approach to the tanker.

Pretty much common sense why it’s useful swept back or forward… forward to keep flying at lower speeds, and/or pull more AoA. Also more stability, for bombing and such as a side note. Fully back to gain more maneuverability and more speed, and to prevent wing ripping at higher speeds. That’s really all it is. No need for a dedicated video as to why variable-sweeping wings are great.

Quick update, I found out when I would launch from a carrier with after burner on, it would actually break my flaps so they would get stuck in the down position. That would prevent my wings from sweeping. Now I just launch without afterburner, raise my flaps, then kick in the afterburner and my wings sweep just fine.

Buttons, dials, switches, etc, all stuck on flat pieces of thin MDF. Multiplex them all through an arduino, route it all to the PC via serial. The only thing that makes it a bit more complicated is if you want toggle switches (for example) to be able to change state on their own, so you need to stick servos on each control of that kind (so that the board can reset itself to a specific state from outside, instead of having to move all controls to the specific position by yourself)

Hi again Grim Reapers and thank you for this video. I've been doing the in-game tutorial about it, but maybe I've forgotten something or not, cause after I put the wing sweep lever down (with right click on it) it should normally go to AUTO mode, but sometimes it works to have my wings sweep automatically, sometimes it doesn't do anything giving similar conditions, so I suppose there is some bug also which makes the AUTO mode do nothing sometimes and you're forced to manually control the sweep. I'll try using the AUTO mode with a key assignment as you did and probably like that I'll have it always automatically handle my sweep. Now, on the other hand, sorry, but I've heard you saying that you're afraid not to "stall" the plane by putting the wings at a higher sweep at that "X" speed! Well, the stall is nothing else than an airflow reversal and separation across the lower pressure portion of the wing (be it upper or lower, depends on AoA, positive or negative) which usually reduces your lift to about 45-50% of the maximum possible and that ONLY happens if for whatever reason the AoA goes above X value and it has absolutely nothing to do with speed, never ever, just AoA! Sorry sir, but due to my respect towards you I considered it's not worth letting you misunderstand the stall as many people out there actually do. Cheers!
@eddievhfan19843 жыл бұрын
As far as stalling, that's pretty much just a consequence of angling the wings back and reducing the effective span of the wing. At lower speeds, a fully swept wing would require higher AoA in order to maintain level flight, and as you saw in the video, when Cap manually swept the wings back, his center of lift changed, and the aircraft nosed down. If this occurred in especially slow/high-AoA flight like TO/LDG/dogfighting, you could quite easily trigger a stall unintentionally. On a related note, this also explains the purpose behind BOMB mode wing sweep, which is really just a preset in MANUAL mode. Jet aircraft of this era were designed to perform high-speed glide-bombing runs, more or less, so using the F-14 for ground attack, the pilot would be running in at high speed compared to something like an A-10. By keeping the aircraft in a manual sweep mode, any small changes in speed wouldn't result in a sweep change that would alter your trim forces and could throw off your aim. The 55° may have been chosen either as the most efficient wing sweep for the intended bombing speeds, and/or it also resulted in minimal longitudinal trim change after weapons come off the racks.
@Maverickf22flyer3 жыл бұрын
@@eddievhfan1984 Thanks you for taking the time to explain details (the way you see it) about sweep configs for bombing runs, but..., with all due respect, learn some more about what a stall actually is. The stall, in it's correct and unambiguous definition, is nothing more than a flow separation (with the consequent flow reversals) on the low pressure area of a body (any 3D shape) that has the consequence of reducing the pressure differences between one side and another of the body/shape, also reducing the lift generated on it. That is the 100% complete definition of the stall. It has nothing to do with airspeed, altitude, wing sweep, flaps/slats & other mechanical inputs, orientation relative to Earth (attitude angles), the Moon, the Sun or other celestial bodies. The one and ONLY thing that affects this undesirable type of flow which is generically named "stall" is..., the angle of attack (AoA)! Nothing more, nothing less. Only the angle of attack, has a positive and negative limit beyond which the airflow becomes "stalled". That, I'm pretty sure you've heard of many times and is called the "stall angle of attack". Indeed, this stall angle of attack is always affected and can change a lot with airspeed (IAS, TAS), Mach number, slats/flaps, boundary layer controls, other surfaces and mechanical deflections and even engines thrust (which more or less affects the airflow ahead and behind the aircraft), but the stall... is only related to this angle. Do not mix things wrong!
@eddievhfan19843 жыл бұрын
@@Maverickf22flyer I am aware of all this. (I took two semesters of aerospace engineering in college and continue to do extracurricular reading on it) If I mention speed in connection with stalling, that is merely to indicate that in unaccelerated 1g flight, stalling AoA and dynamic pressure/indicated airspeed are inversely correlated. The unintentional stall I mentioned would be a result of a pilot overcorrecting after selecting a full aft wing sweep at lower velocities, which would both reduce available lift due to the decrease in effective wing span AND change the center of lift on the aircraft's wing and body (the F-14 provides a significant amount of fuselage lift), which would result in a nose-down force. So if the pilot did not expect this, they may give aft stick, and if they were in a low-speed attack run rather than the high speed nominally required of this flight profile, they may cause a stall accidentally. That's all. OTOH, it has also been mentioned elsewhere that a 55° sweep also disables the maneuvering flaps on the wings, which may have a greater influence on smoothness of control in ground attack than minimizing trim changes, though the latter may still play a part in that.
@Maverickf22flyer3 жыл бұрын
@@eddievhfan1984 Look man, don't get me wrong, I don't want to sound ridiculous or too far fetched, but even after your second attempt to define the stall, you failed! Sorry...! First of..., to understand how things work correctly, it can only take 5 minutes or simply an eternity if you have trouble connecting the things correctly in your mind! I'll try to correct some of the things you've said here and there, before we can move on: 1. "unaccelerated 1g flight"! If you want to refer to a perfectly horizontal flight and the G is along the vertical axis and it's positive, then say it! It's usually very important to mention it completely. Anyone can take that as very intuitive and easy to understand what you're referring to, but it's very important to say the stuff complete/correct and not leave any chance for abiguity! At least, that's how I do when I talk, I take things very seriously, which is very good! You can have a 1G flight no matter the attitude angles and therefore you have an accelerated flight (turn, dive). 2."The unintentional stall I mentioned would be a result of a pilot overcorrecting after selecting a full aft wing sweep at lower velocities, which would both reduce available lift due to the decrease in effective wing span". Overcorrecting..., what you're trying to say is... over-passing the critical AoA. You can "overcorrect" by passing beyond the critical AoA at ANY speed, not low, medium, high or whatever you name it! Why don't you use the right words for what you're trying to mean? Those right words are...: angle of attack! For you, again, a stall occurs when your effective wing span is lower? Where have you learned that?. 3."AND change the center of lift on the aircraft's wing and body (the F-14 provides a significant amount of fuselage lift), which would result in a nose-down force.". Continuing, you talk about the aft (although you didn't normally mention the direction, let's consider it obvious) shift of the neutral point (hope you know well what that is) on the aircraft's wings, but then you also mention the fuselage and the fact that it also generates lift...! Man..., if you're talking about one thing, then finish the detail about that things before moving to the next one. By what you wrote you only seem to want to prove that you've heard/learned some incomplete details about various stuff and try to make a soup out of them and mix them incoherently! You will only make yourself look worse than as someone who knows what he's talking about. I'm telling all of this as a friend...! The fuselage's neutral point isn't going in the same direction as on the wing (because you've said "wing and body")! And the stall..., which indeed first occurs on the wings, won't care for whatever goes on with the fuselage, as the wings airflow alone is the one mostly responsible for any yaw and roll departures that may occur. About what you're saying related to the dive bombing wing setting, yes..., that sweep angle has been chosen as a best compromise for that purpose, but I only felt the need to correct you and talk about the "stall" effect..., not bombing techniques!
@eddievhfan19843 жыл бұрын
@@Maverickf22flyer Your passion is enviable, though I'm not so convinced the way you channel it does it justice. I know about laminar vs. turbulent flow, the flow separation from the wing that occurs in a stalled airflow, neutral point, coefficient of momentum, aerodynamic center, the rest of it. I just elected not to go THAT deep into elementary aerodynamics. There are more polite ways to correct or flex than going full throttle like that.

19 seconds "2 electrical system that drive 2 electric servos that sweep the wings back and forward." That is absolute nonsense. The F14 had a single hydromechanical screwjack actuator, per wing to drive the sweep. There's no backup for that, if it fails, it fails and the wings do not sweep The emergency system is just a backup method to send hydraulic pressure to those actuators... Eg different way to control the hydraulic valves. The normal valve system is electronically controlled, the second is not.
