No burners needed for take off. Longer combat radius than an F-14 with 2 external tanks. ECM capabilities that make a Growler jealous. Air dominance capabilities that exceed anything the F-14 or SH can do. Precision strike abilities that smoke the A-6 and F/A-18. Better SA in the helmet of one pilot than the crew in an E-2. Can provide terminal guidance and even launch authority for SM-6/RIM-174. Performance like a turbo-charged SH. Higher cruising speed with combat load. IADS penetration better than legacy birds. Unprecedented SEAD mission profile capabilities for the CVN.

LRRPFco52 . All "capabilities"sound great and as with any new F/A aircraft bugs need to be worked out. On paper it outperforms anything that's ever flown(Typhoon, perhaps? But lacks stealth). My issue is that F-35C will lose substantial advantages because of time taken to become fully operational. Complete IOC is good but probably will need drone stealth tanker to give it the true combat radius it will need to counter current and near-future threats.

@@EgoFiveFiveSix The AV-8B and Sea Harrier are multirole VTOL aircraft with different primary mission sets depending on service. In the Falklands, the Sea Harriers were primarily used for fleet air defense with their radar and AIM-9L capabilities against multiple actual French Mirage interceptors and A-4 Skyhawk light attack jets being used in anti-shipping roles. The Brits also used the Harriers for interdiction, strike, and CAS once the islands were invaded by Royal Marines. How many French Mirage Mach 2-capable interceptors and fast movers has the Apache shot down? Not a good comparison to really mention.

juscurious - that's the point, a cheap to fly bomber for low intensity conflicts, the thing can run on bio diesel and how much does it cost to fire the mini gun on that thing vs dropping a guided bomb. I get if they want to replace it with something cheaper and faster though, some of the options were prop planes.

In 2007 A-10s mission was changed to medium altitude and do most of the work with JDAMs because of that they are looking at a lighter lower running cost alternative the Scorpion is high on the list they are reviewing. The gun run puts the pilot and plane in danger of shoulder launched missiles and AAA. In the gulf wars most of the aircraft written off for the scrap were A-10s while most of the other types didn't get a scratch.

Beutiful bird but the NAVY has traditionally tried to stay with 2 engine aircraft for safety. When your operating out in the middle of the ocean there aren't alot of divert fields, not to mention ejecting in the middle of nowhere where the nearest help may be hundreds of miles away. Totally different enviroment than land based aircraft. A-4, A-7, F-8 being some exceptions. Only time will tell.

Lockheed brought money and it's R&D team as for them it was easier to participate in VSTOL program that had been already started. This plane can hover and land like a helicopter right? So why not land it like that every Time? Why still try and trap to land? Wouldn't hovering to land avoid the dangers and difficulty of trapping to land? Minimize wear and tear to the air frame, take less time to train pilots, get rid of the danger of the cable snapping and cutting some poor crewman in half? Anyone out there in the know have any knowledge why this is? Or am I missing something with my very limited knowledge of whats going on here? Anyone who can shed some light would be greatly appreciated thanks...

There are 3 versions of the F35, this version the F35C is the Navy Carrier version with strengthened for carrier landings and it has a larger wing to carry more fuel. The F35B is the VSTOL version for the US Marines on the smaller carriers and for the Royal Navy on the UK carriers.

I thought the whole point of these was to take advantage of VTOL? Why are they still using cables to land the planes?

I thought the f35's only carried its ordinance internally (like an f22), but I see under wing hardpoints on some of them
@mississippirebel1409
@mississippirebel1409 5 жыл бұрын
It has 6 extra hard points externally that it can use when going into low threat environments. So that means it can carry a shit ton of ordinance! I do believe that the two inside outside hard points are for the drop tanks.

@@mississippirebel1409 ah I see. Well the press need to check their facts before claiming that the F35 isn't as a effective as 4th gen fighter jets because their payloads are limited to their internal storage bays

It is a somewhat double edged sword, as using the external hardpoints does increase it's radar cross section, making it more visible. To what extent however I do not know

That would be the F-35B used by the Marine Corps. This is the F-35C used by the Navy. The VTOL version of the F-35 doesn't usually operate in CVNs, they operate on LHDs

Not to mention the issues it had with hot exhaust intake via the Direct Lift system (just like the Harrier) and the stuff Boeing had to take off to make it work but they would "fix prior to production." Oy.

Plane bounces kinda a lot on release of the catapult. So much the pilots visor flipped up at 3:52. I don't think the F/A 18 bounced like that. I hope they're able to tame down the release a bit to make it easier on the pilots. It's a beautiful bird though!
