Another tough rugged workhorse put out by Fairchild Republic who also made the P-47, F-105, C-119, AC-119, A-10 etc, all rugged aircraft!

It's funny how the P-47 has an enduring image of a rough and ready ground attacker, when it was actually the premier air-to-air fighter of WW2 capable of beating everything it came up against.

FW 190's could hold their own against it, and I'm guessing they didn't much like mixing it up with ME 262's, but for sure at high altitude it was a wicked air to air fighter, and I think it was a brutally handsome plane too.

P-47s were awesome. I was shocked by the size of the one at the Smithsonian.

@@chonqmonk Me 262s we’re terrible at dogfighting… couldn’t accelerate too fast without flaming out, huge turn radius, 30mm cannon with slow rate of fire very devastating on bombers but limited in range and potential holes between rounds big enough to bracket and miss fighters.. To be effective, ME-262 pilots needed to take a page out of the US PTO’s pilots book against zeros and go boom n zoom…getting into a turning contest against any American frontline fighter such as -47, P-51, and even P-38s

You're actually the best. The F-84 is my favorite Cold War era jet, and this video isn't something I've seen before.

I know that "straight wings" aren't as fast, but, man they look cool!

I loved watching the old Wings shows on Discovery back in the day!

The Discovery Channel's American narrator's voice lives inside my head for any narrative! The 1-hour Discovery Wings show was FANTASTIC! Others tried, but none came close until Dogfights (and even that had issues).

Mike Guardia produces excellent videos that provide footage that is very hard to find elsewhere.

From a time when people could still make good and informative documentaries. I can't even watch modern docs. They are aimed at the double-digit IQ crowd and I grow very irritated with them in the first five minutes. Thanks for posting.

It's fitting given it's eventual raison d'etre that the Republic Aircraft Co. designed and built this airplane.

I always felt bad for the F-84, it always looked like the ugly sister of the beautiful F-86.
