I spent 12 years in Army Aviation (UH-60s). On one deployment we worked out of 2 hangars at Balad. Looking down at the floor you could see a HUGE patch job on the floor. Bigger than our helicopters. Look up and there was a patch job on the roof about half as large. EVERY SINGLE METAL DOOR was bowed outwards along the ones in the underground passages. Most INCLUDED the frame around the door. Those before us dropped some party favors and later when we took over the base they patched them up so we could use them. More than a few hangars were left blown to hell. In the back of your mind you think. Lotta good these hangars did for the last owners. Here we are working away in them..... Mortars and rockets bouncing off them. Thanks for the flashback. Awesome vid!

The Legacy Hornet is better looking, faster, and (mostly) more maneuverable. As they say, "There's nothing 'super' about the 'Super' Hornet. PS - Of course the 'Super' has much better avionics and quite a bit more gas...and thus, more drag. But still, Legacy Charlie's for the win.

This event is actually narrated by the pilot himself on the Air Warriors episode on the F/A-18. It actually says he shot his first missile (Fox 2) as is customary for under-10-mile engagement, thought it didn't connect, and fired a Fox 1 just as the first one impacted the bandit. It's a nice recreation here.

There's just something about the legacy Hornet. I think it's because the design was originally developed for the same competition that produced the Viper, so it's still got some of that agility and speed even after saddling it with the A2G capability. As opposed to the hulking behemoth that the Super Hornet has become.
@termitreter6545 Жыл бұрын
Its also just being a carrier plane, same as F-14. Needs low speed agility to land on carriers. The F-18s we got in DCS are also one of the very few US Hornets that got a more powerful engines. I think the Marines got 10 of those, rest was export. Navy only had slower Hornets.

A lot of young folks don't know that a "jack" is a journeyman in a trade; for example a Master violin maker may have several journeyman doing the rough hand work or the fine and finish work under his supervision. GS, I love your videos! A little bit of error in the historical accuracy of your video. 1) The hornet didn't have a helmet mounted optical system in 1991. 2) Coalition aircraft had a 10000 foot hard deck on all non-search and rescue missions. Planners were more worried about the large number of Iraqi radar guided AA guns than the Iraqi SAMs. Besides, the F-117s were the only aircraft allowed in the areas with heavy SAM threat. This combined with the low supply of precision guided munitions contributed to the very low accuracy of bombing missions. The Mk84s you used could miss the exact aim point by up to 6 feet for every 1000 feet of altitude. 3) I don't know for sure, but I don't think JTIDS, the Hornet's data link system, entered the fleet until 1 or 2 years after desert storm.
