Just because you don't understand the plot doesn't make it bad, plot DOES matter it's just not necessary for every peice of fiction. Good stories are fun to experience but great stories have good plot, characters and tone
@sorenkair6 ай бұрын
"just because russian people can't understand you doesn't mean you're speaking bad russian." a plot's coherence, its ability at effectively communicating its events is arguably its most important quality.
@JacktheStripper-tc5pn6 ай бұрын
@@sorenkair So you're saying every piece of fiction should be catered to slowest humanity has to offer just so everyone can understand, is that it?
@JacktheStripper-tc5pn6 ай бұрын
@@sorenkair I agree there is a difference between complex and indecipherable but I wasn't talking about one piece of media, I was talking about plot as a whole. Historically mentally ill people tend to be more creative
@sorenkair6 ай бұрын
@@JacktheStripper-tc5pn the plot serves very specific functions. i would only agree that a bad plot doesn't necessarily make bad art. there is a correlation between certain mental illnesses and creativity, but we don't know the cause. it could very well be the art and stress of making art that causes the suffering, as well as survivorship/confirmation bias.
@JacktheStripper-tc5pn6 ай бұрын
@@sorenkair I can agree with that. My theory is that mentally ill people are more creative/ seemingly make better art is a combination of venting and not being held back by society but most is commonly due to escapism

this video said what i've been thinking for a long time, very directly and efficiently. i've always been very high on character dynamics over plot in a story. it's probably homestuck's fault-at many points that comic almost feels like the characters are fighting against the concept of plot itself, and winning. the plot is kind of an afterthought, and the characters constantly stop in the middle of it to hash out their drama. i love love LOVE it when linear storytelling is sidelined in favor of interaction, because honestly, it just feels more human to me? my life is a blur, and ALL of the things that stick out to me in the end are moments, not episodes. over the past year i finally started doing what i've always really wanted to do-make comics with my original characters-and realizing how little of a shit i give about plot has honestly made my comics better. (BLAME did this for me big time and i was surprised and extremely satisfied that you shouted it out here.) they're about shards of myself chatting and bickering and kissing one another, not things happening to everyone in sequence. people are a lot more important to me than events. shit is beautiful. well said.

Hard agree. Been hanging a bit in the Pschology-Media space after jumping from Philosophy/Analysis and it's made me more appreciative about the "emotional connection" being far more fundamental, if not instinctual to what people take from art. I don't know if it's just me, but "over thinking" on explicit, implicit or really any particularly "heady" theory crafting does a disservice to the experiential nature of a work cuz yeah, it can be pretty, and any larger calculated message might be worth a thinkpiece or two, but if it has no "soul" that will people really want to engage with it, much less get catharsis for it?

Just stumbled upon your channel by chance and apart from the interesting and really well-made videos I've seen so far, I cannot, and this might be a tad inappropriate to say, stop listening to your voice. You have such a captivating way to speak, somehow soothing and energizing at the same time. Thank you! ☺

though I love Tenet, I understand your criticism and I also love some movies that have zero plot but still are so great to let them go through you: Jim Jarmush' Paterson and Wim Wenders' Perfect Days are recent, perfect examples. Also, I need to point it out, I LOVE your original scores for videos, and your voice. Subscribed for these reasons, too.

Any kind of art has always been about communicating emotion :D I think we often forget this with movies. Sometimes it's not about the story it's about the emotions. Very cool video and observation!

I would argue that it’s the characters that matter in a story over anything else. If the characters suck then what’s the point if the story is good or if it looks pretty?
@timrosswood42593 ай бұрын
Well that gets very subjective. What does it mean for a character to suck?

I've been thinking about this topic a lot in regards to video games and my issue with most modern games. I adore a good story but it's ultimately more important how it's written instead of what it's telling. I just got back from a new giant AAA Jrpg and found time to continue a retro Jrpg that's much simpler in scale yet so creative and fun within it's limitations. Nowadays games tell huge stories that are portrayed in this over the top bombastic way, handholdy explanations and "realistic" looks. It is kind of overkill yet misses the essentials of good writing

THANK YOU for the criticism of Tenet. In my opinion, the criticism that movie gets should go to almost all of Christopher Nolan's other movies too. He barely ever had anything to say past Memento. He himself said that what his movies are about is that reality isn't exactly what you thought it was. But what the fuck does that mean? Absolutely nothing. It's a cis man's desperate attempt at finding some conflict in the world to make art about, so he makes his movies complicated exclusively for the purpose of feeling smart for having figured it out. There's never any meaning in the plot's complexity (except for Memento). And that's just amplified to the max in Tenet.
