Deri Llewellyn-Davies deals with the three big F words, to unravel why fear can feel so real, whilst being entirely irrational. Fear is implicit to courage, a supposed essential trait for success in business and life, but what is it really?
This talk was delivered at Edinburgh's iconic Central Hall on Thursday, February 18th 2016 and was a part of series of talks given at the TEDxUniversityofEdinburgh 2016 Conference.
When it comes to Deri Llewellyn-Davies, the phrase ‘suited and booted’ takes on a new meaning: there aren’t many men out there who spend their days in a pinstriped three-piece and their spare time climbing the highest summits in the world. Deri Llewellyn-Davies is a speaker, entrepreneur and author. He has climbed six of the highest mountains in the world, completing the legendary Ironman, and recently made an attempt to scale Everest. Using the principles of purpose, vision and values, Deri aims to enable businesses and individuals alike to fulfil their potential.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I am a Nepalese and I saw and felt that catastrophic disaster. Whole country was restless as well as sedated at the same time. I was in a room preparing for my final exam. I could barely walk, I somehow managed to find my mother and sister we hugged each other for 2 minutes. we could do nothing, but pray for our lives. That's the closest I have faced death, then we ran to an open space barefoot. We had nothing to protect than our lives.

People who live life according to their own rules are often criticized by those who are afraid to step outside society's boundaries. It's easy to sit back and judge him as arrogant, vain, boring, self-grandizing, etc while you troll the internet looking for some inspiration to help you live the life that you are to afraid to live.

People hating on this guy because of his attitude which you perceive as arrogant, are afraid of the truth. This guy is living his dreams something that i can say that i am not and something that most of the commenters are not doing either, which is why we watched a ted talk like this in the first place. You special little unicorns want everything sugar coated for you so you don't have to face the reality, but in order to solve you real problems you need a real solution not a sugar coated one.

What is it about fathers and sons.. The moment he told the story of his father on his death bed was the moment I cracked . The hard truth of that moment when life is about to end when you finally realise too late that you could've done so much more. Even the small things of saying to your 8 year old son that you're too tired to go in the garden and play ball with him and then you watch him slump on the sofa disappointed. Those small things bite you back later. So get your arse up and play ball with your kid, write that book, do what your gut keeps telling you to do . That's it really!

hey Deri, awesome talk! I listen to Ted talks while I clean at night. I've had such bad anxiety for the last 5 years and these talks have helped so much. yours resonated with me because of recent events in my life...both loss and unexpected responsiblities. I agree with the ego fear thing because I've lived it. dealing with the fear is becoming easier because of talks like this! thank you! it's the beautiful moments

That's our problem when we hear and see someone like this guy who is obviously successful courageous, confident - and handsome taboot - up comes the green eyed monsters with their envy, jealousy and judgements. God forbid we will ever be any of those things - of cause it's ok if we all act humble and apologetic - then we are not judged.

Skydive!!!! Climbing mountains and skydiving and such are risk based choices one can make or not. Real fear involves situations in which we have no choice or control. Illness and death, being confronted with a armed robber or assailant/animal ,going into a prison and numerous post-accident scenarios'

Anyway fear creates anxieties so yes it is very important learn to face your fears. However it's okay to be afraid sometimes but it is also okay to kick fear in the teeth and show Fear who's boss. Don't let fear control you. You control fear otherwise fear Can hinder your life and stop you for doing things that you want to do in his life. However used common sense if something doesn't look right to you if it looks dangerous stay away from it don't pursue. There is a such thing is being overconfident so got to be careful.

To me, this guy sounds like he’s bragging a lot. In my mind it’s easy to face a fear that is an actual rational fear. To face the fear that you’re convinced someone’s watching you in the middle of the night, that if you do complete that obsessive ritual you’ll crash the car and die, the feeling of constant worry, over irrational fears, that’s what’s virtually impossible to overcome.

who let this guy onto a ted stage? for the record, i think ted talks are a national treasure. i have watched most of them but this nigga? shit he like a well mannored, well spoken Jersey Shore cast member. This talk has 10% to do with the complexities of fear and 90% to do with how much of a bad ass this guy thinks he is. He spends the majority of his talk regailing us with tales of of his adventures and presents nothing substantial on the subject of how and by what proccesses one should go about "facing the fear"

Ironically, this idiot has been driven to do all of these things by... his fear of having regrets on his death bed. There might (and infact, probably is) some truth to what he says, but he's still clearly deeply concerned with image and guided strongly by status (or ego/self whatever you want to call it), and is therefore utterly useless to anyone concerned with the truth (which should be everyone).
