If I got it right : 1. You must name and reject your fear. " I am afraid of _________" 2. You must reprogram your brain with different thoughts. "I've solved other problems, I can solve this" 3. You must rebuild your brain by taking action. " I will take classes, more training, educate myself on what I dont know, and find a mentor(s) who can help" I LOVE IT!

She started off in poverty and failing most of her math and science courses. Showcasing her achievements to make little of those around her was not her intention. It was to inspire others to make the most out of their environment and opportunities just as she did at her lowest.

1. Name your fear and reject it. 2. Reprogram your brain with new positive better thoughts. Our brains are like computers you must take out the "fear" virus. 3. Tell yourself you can make a big difference. Think positive of the outcome. 4. Find Mentors that support you and can help you. 5. Rebuild your brain. Exercise your brain with confronting fear develop direct opposition to your fear. This creates new pathways in our brain. 6. Believe in your abilities and skills when confronted with self doubt or obstacles.

goldsilverandiamonds I've noticed a pattern with some Ted Talks where they reject and ignore negativity, replacing it with synthesized positivity, but not a lot of folk using things like ACT, or Mindfulness, or acknowledging their negativity as being something normal. Its not the greatest message.
@goldsilverandiamonds9 жыл бұрын
Louis Bullock I think as most people get older they start understand negativity is a toxic state of being. Why flood your mind with negativity when we can choose how to look at and react to life in a positive way. Most negative thoughts and emotions are like junk food they may initially satisfy us but long term use and indulging them takes a toll on our health and actually harms us. Would you choose to feed yourself junk food and crap if you had a choice and the money to eat the greatest, freshest and healthiest foods? I would eat the best, put the best food into my body so why not emotional do the same. Put in the best thoughts and images into your mind. I am not saying become Pollyanna but consciously direct your mind to the things that are good, healthy, beneficial and positive. We are in many ways wired to be negative and fearful and have to work to be positive. It's not easy at first, but I think you'll find that those that do and practice it have better, healthier more fulfilling and economically successful lives. In reality you are the architect of your own life you can build your foundation with dirt (negativity) or you can build it with steel and concrete ( positivity). You can use scraps of wood or the finest lumber. You can build your house with cheap, crappy foreign products or you can build it with the best, custom made and designed products. So why not use and invest in the best when clearly the payoff and investment is worth it. I think you get the idea.
@iamlouisbullock9 жыл бұрын
A fair sentiment, well written. Agreed, negativity can be harmful, and in large amounts isn't great, can make one feel unbalanced. I'm speaking more from the work that Russ Harris has done on Mindfulness and accepting that a bit of negativity is still okay, no need for one to dismiss it completely. Otherwise dismissing negativity altogether can breed people who aren't truthful to themselves about how they actually feel.
@goldsilverandiamonds9 жыл бұрын
Louis Bullock I don't think people have a problem with having enough negativity in their lives. We are bombarded with it constantly. I don't disagree the ability to live with negativity is ok. But living with some negativity and or letting or giving into negativity so that it is predominate in your life is not a wise idea. What people are really deficient in is finding happiness , current contentment with who and where they are in life. And also feeling and being positive about life and their future. No one needs help being negative. We all need help and encouragement to be rationally positive and at times irrationally positive. We are what we focus on. We move in the direction we focus on we attract what we focus on. If we are not conscious of what we focus on we easily get led down the path of negativity . It is important that we really think of what we want in our lives and from our lives. The ability to think and be positive should be high on everyone's list. This is not easily to do it takes effort. Negativity on the other hand is easy it takes little effort. In my opinion negativity should not be high on anyone's list. Have you ever watched the movie the Secret? or learned about the Law of Attraction? If not you might find the movie interesting. You can find a the full movie on You tube. You can find many videos on the Law of Attraction too. As I get older I realize there is great truth to the Law of Attraction from years of personal experience. It's important to guard your mind and feed it healthy thoughts and images. If you don't someone else or society will feed it with junk, negativity, lack and hopelessness among other things. It's is important that you learn to pull the weeds that invade your garden (mind).

This is by far one of the best TEDx Talks that I have seen thus far. Olympia not only shared the 3 steps to reprogram our brains to overcome fear which by itself in a monotone manner would have been sufficient. She also showed us how to effectively communicate. How to talk in a paused clear way while articulating every word. She handled perfectly the great and confident motions in platform. Starting from the engaging beginning to catch everyone's attention and get everyone engaged by applauding the enactment of a rocket launching. While sharing that she made it from the below average to become a great rocket scientist. Great job Olympia. You are an inspiration.

Carlos Vasconcelos don't be so faint of mind as to accept emotional persuasion or stylish rhetoric over legitimate fact. This "speech" is merely her saying saying this is my opinion I have accomplished all these things so it must be true. When in reality it remains, only speech. Certainly motivating, but scientifically illegitimate. You mistake depression for vision of what is true, and self help bullshit.
@Nicodemosfreitas9 жыл бұрын
james dean We choose to believe in whatever we want. It does not mean I'm accepting it as absolute true. A fact you can not change is that she is successful and it did work for her, she want to help other people using her life story, by the way a few people can do it. What about you? What can you tell me about your life that can be inspiration for others or even for me? Maybe you don't like self help, it is called pride. Pride is the worse character a person can have. I was in your place before, so I don't judge you. Hope one day all negative and bad eyes you have towards others can change for something good.
@isillor5299 жыл бұрын
Carlos Vasconcelos all we know is that she was successfull. We don't know how she got there. My story could not inspire people, no. But that matters little. Inspiration is in many ways false hope. Thinking you can achieve something you can't makes you waste time and nothing else. I don't hate self help becuase of pride, but rather becuase its just talk. It makes you feel good and empowered, but leads to no results. Much like a new years resolution. You may feel inspired, but you are no closer to "reprograming your brain". So the speech is wasted.

It is important to know that you can conquer a daunting task. 8.18: Step two is to reprogram your brain with different thoughts. Take the "virus" fear out of our brain so you can think properly. 10.37: Step three is to rebuild your brain and the neurons in your brain to take action and see results. 11.25: I like how she explains how mathphobia can turn off our frontal lobe and prevent us from problem solving. Being able to reprogram how our brains work can help us overcome this issue. Great TED talk!

Her fear was being a woman who could not succeed at math. She not only named it but gave it a classification called mathaphobia. Her environment growing up was full of dangers and challenges to her self concept, yet she found a formula to overcome them.She "reprogramed" her brain, telling herself that she was educated with sufficient personal resources and networks of mentors to overcome the fear. Then she confronted the fear directly by creating behaviors or actions in direct opposition to the fear, causing her to get busy and redefine her success. Pow! Fear overcome. Now, she can launch all kinds of rockets. And, she wore that outfit like an olympian and strode the stage like a goddess. Olympia LePoint is firing on all cylinders, and anyone can learn from her example, even men.

This is such an inspirational video, understanding that fear only inhibits your brain to problem solve or critically think, my dad always told fear is really not a really thing its basically your body trying to protect itself from what it perceives as danger or over exhaustion

Wow!!! I really needed to hear this. Name and reject your fear. I really could have used this during my younger years but i will take and run with it today. The sky is the limit!!!

Inspiring! Often, people who are in such a trying situation to begin with don't rise above their circumstances and become successful against all odds. I teach this all of the time...in order to do what you want, you have to first believe that you can.

I am very happy for her and I believe it must have been a lot of work. Good for her. She mentioned this person which helped he, this Man. Well this is what every person needs, a mentor, a hand on your shoulder, maybe a kick in the butt sometimes but if people who were lucky enough to get somewhere would help just one person, it would change the world like it changed her. Good luck.
