Apparently the Safety car crashed because of a brake failure, which is why Bernd flicked it sideways (hence the screeching) to reduce momentum before going into the gravel and hitting the barrier. So even crashing is done skillfully by this driver😅
@seashackf14 ай бұрын
I heard a caliper locked. It looks like the car pitched left. He then counter steered and it went right and spun. He was counter steering the whole way like he was still trying to save it. Kind of like an unintentional Scandinavian flick. Deliberately spinning a car at those speeds is a huge risk. The car could flip if it hit the trap sideways. Now, If he did have no brakes he may not have had an option. If possible, with a very fast corner like the Parabolica corner ahead, I’d try to get off the gas and take the corner to scrub speed. It would then enter the gravel trap in a more controlled manner and not straight on to the barriers like it did. That’s a very big ‘if possible’. I think this was a sudden failure and he was just skillfully reacting. Either way Bernd handled it like a champion.

@therealf.b.i94684 ай бұрын
@@seashackf1so do you want him to drive straight into the barrier at like 180kph (even with a lift)? When we have a brake failure we deliberately spin the car to reduce momentum, we were taught this since karting days. Spinning reduced momentum, so instead of head-on impact at 180kph it would be around 140kph instead because of the tyres scrubbing the speed, plus it's hard to spin those things anyway because the suspension is not soft like an SUV.

The safety car accident looked like a case of brake failure followed by Bernd Maylander deliberately throwing the car into a skid to reduce speed and aimed at crashing into the softest part of the barrier - the tecpro. Looks like a top notch job by Bernd in handling a very serious emergency situation.
@seashackf14 ай бұрын
I don’t think it was deliberate. It looked more like an unintentional Scandinavian flick. Maybe a brake caliper locked up. The car went left then immediately right like he was counter steering into it. Then as he’s spinning right again you can see him counter steering into the skid the whole way like he was still trying to save it. Also, at those speeds it would be far too dangerous to intentionally spin the car. It could have flipped when it spun and hit the gravel trap sideways. Now, If he had no brakes a far better thing to do would be get off the gas, take the corner to scrub as much speed as possible and go wide into the gravel trap in a more controlled manner and at an angle and not straight on to the barriers.
@LoganSergeantF14 ай бұрын
I thought so too
@Czeslaw_cn4tv4 ай бұрын
I would like some more details on this but I would consider it highly unlikely the accident happened due to driver error. I would also consider it unlikely he deliberately flicked the car. Cars are designed for head on impacts and if you know you're going to hit a barrier (he would know) you want to go in head first. This is also why road cars have dialled in understeer and the general idea when you have different front and rear tyres is to install the better ones on the rears. It's all about which part of the car gets hit when things go wrong.
@otaviopohren59984 ай бұрын
@@seashackf1Nah, bro. You can see the car fails to break. Spinning is the only way to reduce speed. Barrichello had a similar crash (with a Subaru), where the calipers overheated and he had to spin the car to avoid a frontal full speed crash
@seashackf14 ай бұрын
@@otaviopohren5998 I’ve heard and it looked to me like a caliper locking up. Intentionally spinning at those speeds is very dangerous. He had the very fast Parabolica in front of him. He could take that and scrub a lot of speed. Still won’t make the corner, but better than going straight into the barriers. We’ll see. Also wonder if Aston actually does release the info of what happened. This is one of their road cars that consumers can buy after all.

The biggest pace car (safety car) crash I recall was at the start of the 1971 Indianapolis 500. After leading the field to the green flag, the pace car, driven by a local car dealer and with one of the TV announcing crew as passenger, lost control while returning to the car's ready station and crashed into a photographers' stand, injuring 29 people. It was the last time someone without racing credentials was selected to drive the pace car for The 500.

No other cars were involved, and the Safety Car quickly resumed its duties. 2007 Japanese Grand Prix: During a very wet race at Fuji Speedway, the Safety Car, driven by Bernd Mayländer, briefly slid off the track due to the extremely poor visibility and wet conditions but did not crash or sustain any damage. The Medical Car has been in more accidents/crashes.

Seems like a braking failure. The wiggles shows that the pilot tries desperatly to loose speed, and if you push up the sound a little bit he also tries to accelerate when he is completly in the backward position. Without any brakes, the only way to loose speed is tzig Zag or to reverse the car and accelerate in the opposite direction. Bernd Mayländer is a master on the tracks, I would not be surprised if it was exactly what he was trying to do by reving his Aston Martin.

Honestly preferred the upgraded Merc, seems the drivers have been commenting on the reduced speed of the safety car this year compared to the Merc too. It's not good enough but money is money and that's seemingly more important to the FIA than driver safety.
