Not sure if there was any milling done to the heads or block but if there was....The FE head gasket and intake gasket surfaces are 90 degrees relative to each other, so any machining operation to the heads or block deck will have had a corresponding impact on the intake fit...which would cause leaks.

Glad you found that before you put coolant in it. I didn't know how you were gonna go back with the engine. I would of wrapped the header over by the starter. Just saying because fords and headers don't always work well together. Those header gaskets looked a little thin that you put on there. I used the thick white header gaskets on mine when I put it back together. I used the original cast exhaust manifolds on mine. Originally they used the metal gaskets. FE's are notorious for leaking exhaust manifolds. The intakes on FE's tend to weep oil on the front or back where it goes across the engine. I never had any problem with the sides like your experiencing. I hope you don't have a cracked intake. Hopefully the gasket just moved when you were putting it together.

More than likely the intake. Gasket was for a tall port. If you got the small port gasket use them instead. Also don't use the cork end gaskets use about a 1/4 inch bead of rtv or right stuff, if you have it then let it set up 15 minutes or so then replace the intake Ps if you can check the geometry angle. The head to the block then the intake to make sure the angles are the same.

I ALWAYS use FelPro Printo Seal intake gaskets on the sides & straight beads of silicone along both China walls. Also, you may need to machine a bit off of the bottom of the intake manifold depending on how much was machined off the heads. The manifold can be a bit too wide on the bottom & not allow the sides to drop down enough to line up because of the angles on the sides. You should get a cap for the air tube on the carb choke housing. It will suck air in through the carb that will make the choke stay on longer & also allow dirt (dust) to be drawn into the engine. There is a possibility that it doesn't have a hole at the carb main body behind the choke housing or you may be able to locate or make a gasket without a hole in it. You should make certain that air is stopped from getting into the carb main body by some method. The hole will enter the main body just above the booster ring in the rear corner of the choke flap opening.

I think people put some sealant on those aluminum head gaskets to seal the water ports running from the engine to the head, I run the same HEI type distributor on my 74 F100 2wd with a 360. I could not reuse the factory aircleaner as the HE

I've been there and it is frustrating because of all the maybe's that you think of. Plus being so careful and things still go wrong. At least the engines in to stay! I don't know what the angle of the intake to the heads are but I'm guessing that its off just a tad and letting air out into the engine cavity. It might only be a half a degree but if you have a head that you can lay flat and get the degree of angle and then the intake angle as well... this is just a guess... good luck

Thats another thing I didn't think about... if someone machined that junkyard manifold to match another set of heads...
@callmenortnortin467
@callmenortnortin467 4 жыл бұрын
Just a possibility here but you might consider,, If that manifold was ever shaved to seat on heads that were planed??.in some cases when the head get planed the intake manifold needs to be planed to match ,,because,, When heads are planed,in effect ,they sit closer together on the block as a result.this makes the angle of the manifold flange not sit fully face to face to the head(s).This makes manifold planning necessary for a good seal between the head(s) and the block.This may not be your case I know but!! if that is your situation sourcing another original spec manifold ( new or used) may not solve your issue. Enjoy your videos and hope you come to a simple solution to your issue .
@330_garage3
@330_garage3 4 жыл бұрын
Thats something I should have thought of with a used manifold, that came off a motor that was pretty freshly machined. Very likely that manifold could have been machined to fit on some shaved heads

Well at least it looks pretty! Hey it wouldn't be a "real life" situation if everything went perfectly. This isn't TV...lol Speaking on the Heater hose fitting on the intake, I'm betting Drake, Dennis Carpenter, C&G Ford, or LMC Truck has the correct one available. Your original sure seemed taller than what I'm use to seeing. The OE ones typically were just tall enough to align with the water passage that was in the carb spacer. Then the heater would hook to the rear exiting side of the carb spacer. Not really sure why Ford did this unless the 2bbl didn't get enough heat from the acres of iron intake...?? Also one last note. Keep spare starter around. I looks like you coated your headers? Hopefully that coating you have reduces the heat as these headers, non-coated, have a tendency to cook starters. Ask me how i know.... (and how i get that top starter bolt easily ;-) )

Come on BLUE OVAL People someone step up and help the young man out!!! I would have went with a little better gasket set up remember when you torqued them they crushed out a little . Also your intake manifold may be the problem, that cover inside needs to be just right . You put a bigger cam in im guessing swap out that cast iron boat anchor paint your new / used aluminum intake and let her work . Those pistons need help too in my opinion but its your money and i understand you may be looking for something differant . With 10:1 compression id be curious what your h.p rating is 390 were high winding .

I have had this issue using the steel shim head gaskets in a 390. I ended up having to use the blue multilayer head gaskets from Fel-Pro. They sealed and no more issues. I would assume you are having the same issue i had. I also noticed that you did not pre oil the timing chain. Not good to fire up on a dry timing chain.
