This whole saga exposed and burned out Dave forever. He will never be able to recover from that fall IMO. Alvarez kinda got 3/4 of the burn too lol, I think he's slowly trying to salvage whatever he can to be relevant for the upcoming years. Overall Dave was used by his sources ( we all know who they are in AEW let's be real ) to spread BS, he got super lazy ( if he ever was a pro to begin with ), didn't verify sources that were very one sided, but the truth always prevails and time gave CM Punk reason. Now they stopped feeding Dave his weekly CM Punk rumors because obviously Punk is gone, but also because they don't need him anymore. The rest of the roster who didn't get the favors of the EVPs and defacto stood with CM Punk don't want to talk to Dave either because they know what he did to CM Punk. Tony Khan probably doesn't want to speak to him anymore because he knows he took active part in having CM Punk snap and leave. The WWE people don't want to talk to Dave because they saw what happened with him and AEW. He is DONE.

The statement that Bryan and Dave and Wrestling Observer as a whole had no role in fueling the rumors of Punk and Cabana is an utter lie. Even during the feud with hangman when all of the conflict was strictly behind the scenes, Dave alluded to there being some truth to Hangman's ramblings in the promo. Then, Dave made a report on the website, while Punk was out with the foot injury, that there were rumors about Punk having something to do with Cabana's demotion/firing. These reports came well before Punk ever made the live shoot promo calling out Hangman on his return. So, yes F4W was 100% a part of the rumor mongering about the Punk/Cabana stuff. It was Tony's fault that none of this was addressed before it built up into the volcano that it did.

That's the Meltzer special, right next to "plans changed". Little tangent, but on subject: on KZbin by came across old audio Meltzer and Alvarez reviewing No Way Out 2001 the night that it happened. Afterwards they are speculating on what the main event for Wrestlemania 17 was going to be. Lots of speculation. Kurt angle's name was mentioned, Kane, maybe a couple of others even though Steve Austin won The Rumble and The Rock just won the title and that was the top match to do anyway... But I guarantee if you asked Dave Meltzer today about WrestleMania 17 he would tell you that the plan was Steve Austin versus The Rock all along and that he knew it all along. That it was 'obvious'. The dude is a super fan with a newsletter. The dude was persistent enough to go to shows, pick up the phone and call wrestlers, try to meet wrestlers in the guise of a 'journalist', network, make connections and establish contacts and consistently put out his newsletter over the years and this is the final product. He helped create this acrobatic tumbling act that the aew / Indy style is because the dude has been so immersed in pro wrestling his entire life that he probably got bored with it and unfortunately because wrestlers are typically as big of marks as we are and because Dave was one consistent dirtsheet of the business, the dude had influence. Thanks to the Bruce Prichard podcast, followed by others like Eric Bischoff and other guys that have called Dave out on his shit (which I always thought that they were just office guys still mad at him for spoiling shit and maybe going a little too hard on him) and over a period of time, armed with that information and perspective, people have began to see what a fraud and a clown the dude is particularly in comparison to how he was viewed in decades past. They all damaged the company. The Elite and Jungle Boy obviously started it but Punk made it worse by his actions. "Lightly choke." He legit assaulted someone over a off hand comment. Ultimately the one who's responsible not stopping all this from blowing over is Tony Khan. As great some of the matches he sets up, he failed at dealing with this situation before it got out of hand.

He can’t see the irony in his words. Almost every anti-punk piece came from the observer which in turn outted Tony’s incompetence, which in turn made the IWC lose faith in AEW. Meltzer’s relationship in AEW is the embodiment of the “who shot Hannibal” meme.

Marks at the WON convinced guys like hangman and jungle boy that they were stars, which is exactly why they developed these inflated opinions of themselves and threw their weight and ego around. Again Dave mentions how he is texting Tony Khan about things to do and deal with. You are not really objectively covering this company. He needs this promotion to validate him and his prefered style so will defend and spin best he can on everything. First thing he says is noone did more damage to aew then cm punk, no, sorry, Tony Khan has done more damage to his company then anyone by not being a boss. Punk was a ratings , merchandise and attendance mover, proving his point, aew run by tony isnt a business its a fantasy league he gets to book.

The line about the 5* matches in quarter-full buildings was brutal. AEW has got to stop running these 20,000 seat basketball arenas. The shots you get on TV look awkward because the ring and entrance ramp are off center, and it looks awkward watching wrestlers pose for the empty half of the arena just because that's where the hard cam is. Go get a 5,000 seat building and pack that place to the rafters.
