F650GS Dakar oil change - RJ

My brother was nice enough to help me change the oil on my 2001 BMW F650GS Dakar. I decided to record the entire process for future reference, and figured I would post it here for anyone who needs it. Hopefully it will help someone!

The best thing to do is, after a change, fill the oil all the way up to the top of the reservoir. When you start the bike, the oil level will drop significantly, and it should end up at the bottom of the dipstick. That is perfect.

The filling procedure is shown near the end of the video, so you will see that in action. To answer your question of how much oil, make sure you have 3 quarts (or 3 liters) on hand, and you will have enough with some left over. Then just check on it every now and then to keep it at the bottom of the dipstick (cold), and you are good to go.

Many people overfill these bikes, which is very bad. When the bike is cold, the oil level should just be touching the bottom of the dipstick--any more than this and it will be too high when the oil warms up. The easy way to get the proper level, however, is (after you have drained all of the oil and changed the filter) to simply fill the oil reservoir ALL THE WAY UP to the top. You'll notice when you start the bike that the level drops immediately and, when it settles, it should be perfect.

Indeed this does help. I've a 2001 as well. Never changed the oil yet; so many steps! I think with old Suzuki and Honda I could change oil with my eyes closed. - Boy they make these BMWs tuff. Are going to show to show other fluid change? I don't know which is brother working & on camera but good clarity. One odd thing I've only had my bike a few months but the oil sight level on even level was high - past few days I've noticed with level 100% full covered? goes up without adding?

The sight level can be very misleading, because even when there is enough oil, it may not show up in the window. The oil level will not typically go up unless the oil is hot, and then it can expand to fill more of the container. A lot of people over-fill these bikes, which is very bad.

Hi Great video!! I have a 650 gs 2006 single cylinder two spark plugs. The spark plugs caps have a specific order or not? The bike idle well. 😀

Should you really wet the paper of the oil filter? I would think the air would escape through a dry filter quicker. I would do a spark plug change at the same time, and crank it for a bit with the plugs pulled.

That's what I have always done with my filters in cars and motorcycles, to limit the time that the engine runs dry.

That's one of the reasons why you run the bike before you do the oil change so everything is still coated when you start it again.

Mobil 1 ? I tough it is a bit abrasive to the BMW motorbike engines versus Castrol oil.

+Jonjonchevy Not much will hurt the nikasil-lined cylinder on the F650 singles, and this is the first I have heard of Mobil 1 being abrasive in these engines. I'll do some research. Unrelated to this, however, I am planning on switching to AmsOil in my next change, since I can source it more cheaply.

+Kevin John It is like my old Land Rover, with time they do not do well with the American multi-specs oils. Like the American gasoline comparing to the European ones. To my research these years oil specs should be API SG and or JASO MA-2; witch Castrol 4T is. I use Mobil 1 into my other engines.

+Jonjonchevy Be aware with the Dakar models, do not overfill the engine oil due to overheating issues. I always mesure after the first two liters.
