Keyonce Lee Hang was born genetically male, but now she is living as a woman and named herself after American singer Beyoncé. Lee Hang is one of the thousands of Samoan fa’afafine, which means ‘in the manner of a woman’.
Although fa’afafine have not been defined as a third gender by law, they are widely accepted in Polynesian culture. They believe fa’afafine is their own cultural identity.

A major point missed here is that they are not given a choice to be this way. Their parents force it on them from early childhood because they want another daughter to care for them when they get old.

@@finnz7786 there’s not much of this written but this information’s been passed by word and mouth over generations. This correlates with how in Samoa it’s also common for them to adopt out their own children to other family sometimes so that everyone has atleast a daughter and son but if they can’t source a daughter through that or conceive one then they may raise a son as fa’afafine

A samoan friend told me, since a long time ago, every male samoan are culturally required to work 'outside', mostly sailing, and the female had to stay to maintain the village. With such division of roles, in times of danger there would be noone to protect their homes or did the heavy labour only men can do at the village while ALL of them had to go outside. So they purposely 'created' a third gender that has the manpower of male while still being in the scope of female. And this thing happened way longer than you probably can think and had already become a custom even in modern world, though not all villages/tribes follow this tradition.
