I love these videos - you make it very easy to understand! It would be really helpful if they could be organized in order - the one I just watched referenced something we supposedly went over in the previous video, but I have not watched anything that covered that! I might be missing something that tells me the order I should be watching them? Although I'm sure I will find it soon as I go through them!! Thanks for making all this stuff so easy to understand!!

These videos are great! You have a great way of presenting the information. Thanks for putting them together and uploading them. I’m watching your whole series as a refresher before I take my 107 😊. Expanding on the yellow areas being urbanized. While sectional charts are used by drone pilots, they are intended for VFR (Visual Flight Rules) manned flight and support flying with minimal or no navigation equipment onboard your aircraft. Because of this the charts are full of little features that aid pilots in orienting themselves simply by looking at the ground (highways, railroads, the little magenta flags are local landmarks, etc). The yellow cities serve a similar purpose, they are a depiction of what that city would like from overhead while flying at night. If you’re lost at night you can compare the yellow shape on the chart to the yellow light you see down below and approximate your location.

Hi Mr Migs, thank you for your videos they are awesome! Question... Is there a trick to recognize where the actual airport is in relation to where the airport name is written on the map/charts? I've had practice questions ask me to look so many nautical miles of an airport and I find it difficult to recognize which airport is which because sometimes there are a couple next to each other. Is label of the airport name always on the left? So if say we are looking for the SUX airport do we look for the words SUX and then find the airport to the right side of the words SUX? Or is there any other way to recognize which airport name goes to each airport? I've gotten wrong answers because I was measuring from the next airport over because I'm apparently not reading the map correctly.

At 5:49, I'm confused. Isn't this class C airspace? The area you are pointing out is within the red solid lined area. Wouldn't you need to file for authorization to enter through LAANC even if you are below the 1200 ft floor because you are in Class C? I don't understand how this is Class E airspace. I know in Class E you don't need authorization to enter if you are flying below the floor, but that's not the case in Class B,C, and D.

@roymercer22 Жыл бұрын
I'm having the same confusions as well. @Mr. Mig can you clarify this?
@johnbankston72
@johnbankston72 Жыл бұрын
No, you wouldn’t need authorization in that specific area if you fly your drone under 1200’ because the floor of Class C in that specific area is 1200’. That’s what the 40 over 12 means, a floor of 1200’ and a ceiling of 4000’ ft. I think what’s confusing you is you’re only going by the fact you’re inside the magenta ring. That’s just the first step. You must also look at what the floor and ceiling height is for each specific airspace. Also, under 1200’ in this specific area is class G, not E, as he states at 6:20.

Thank you for this video. If the tower was at 560 feet AGL and it was inside the shaded magenta do you need atc clearance? I ask because 560 AGL is below 700 AGL. But if you fly at 400 feet above it then I know for sure you need it. Will they always use the word maximum allowed height? Or will they say if you inspecting the tower do you need atc clearance?
@MrMigsClassroom
@MrMigsClassroom Жыл бұрын
They will not always say maximum allowable height. Technically in the shaded class E you do not need permission from ATC. However, it is still “controlled airspace”. I know that might make things a bit confusing. I intend to do a video on class e airspace soon.

I have mavic mini 2 and I think I flew on outskirts of class D, to take a pic of a small island. DJI app didn't stop me, it only said that I am in a enhanced warning area and that I should fly with caution. I googled it and it said that enhanced warning areas are not illegal but when looking at sky vector its clearly barely within class D. Idk why DJI didn't stop me from flying there, I am thinking that tower might've been out of hours so it was class G airspace during that time, meaning I didn't need approval. I am so confused by it

@johnbankston72
@johnbankston72 Жыл бұрын
I believe you are correct in this specific instance where Class E’s floor is at 700’ and not SFC. Below is a copy / paste from an article I read. “A big point of confusion comes from the fact that there are multiple types of Class E airspace, only one of which (Class E2) requires authorization in order to operate there. Part 107.41 makes clear that no person may operate a small UAS “within the lateral boundaries of the surface area of Class E airspace designated for an airport unless that person has prior authorization from ATC.” This somewhat complicated language refers specifically to Class E2 airspace, which generally means a Class E airport (with controlled airspace that extends to the surface), and not extensions to other classes of airspace. The remaining types of Class E airspace are still considered controlled airspace, but do not require prior authorization in order to operate (since the controlled airspace starts at 700 ft. AGL) - so you don’t need a LAANC authorization there.” Source: www.aloft.ai/blog/class-e-airspace-and-laanc/amp/

Geno, I once had an ATC employee speak in my classroom. He said even if you request 1 foot too many he has to deny the request and cannot tell you why. Next time try to request the lowest amount of height needed for your mission. If you are going to fly in an airspace that allows flight at 100ft request under 100 ft, do not request exactly 100ft. Also, Norfolk is probably tough to get approval because of the Naval station.
