Per www.federalregister.gov/documents/2024/10/01/2024-22018/removal-of-expiration-date-on-a-flight-instructor-certificate-additional-qualification-requirements - "As proposed, § 61.19(d)(1) would remove the expiration date for flight instructor certificates issued on or after the final rule's effective date. Section 61.19(d)(2) would retain the current requirement and state that flight instructor certificates issued before the final rule's effective date would expire 24 calendar months from the month in which they were issued, renewed, or reinstated, as appropriate." My interpretation of this is that New CFI certificates issued after the effective date would no longer have an "Expiration Date" shown on them, and those CFI certificates issued prior to the effective date, would effectively expire 24 calendar months after they were issued, UNLESS the CFI accomplished one of the FAA approved recency experience acts for the certificate. I further interpret this language to mean that they are not going to print out new CFI certificates to CFIs who had certificates issued prior to the effective date of this new ruling.

28,000hr retired airline guy. Mine expired and went away in the late 90s/early 2000s when FSDOs and POIs were no longer allowed to auto renew for Pt121 Captains. Such a shame. I have a careers worth of experience I’d love to share but not playing the game of starting from “square one”. I gave “dual” nearly every day. It may not have been eights-on-pylons, but instructing nonetheless less. Oh well...🤷♂

I just teach on the sim at CAP now. I wouldn't mind getting back to air instruction, but honestly I can accomplish so much more with just x plane or MSFS on the ground.

Ditto... mine expired in 1988... 2 years after I made captain on part 121 and then obtaining 7 more type ratings before retirement... It's a waste, but it allows the younger folks less barriers

Similar boat here, but I don't have nearly the experience you do.

So basically you can still "lose" your certificate and have to take a checkride again except now its harder to remember when you need to do that because the FAA doesnt feel like printing the expiration date anymore

It's a step in the right direction but not what we all really wanted. We wanted the certificate to never expire but to have to show recency of experience requirements over a time interval to be able to exercise the privileges, similar to how regular pilot certificates are now. We wanted to be able to not think about our CFI certificate for 20 years while doing a different flying job and then come back to it one day if needed by then doing a FIRC and an 8710 or something like that. With this new rule, it seems one still has to upkeep the certificate with a FIRC and an 8710 but now they give a 3-month grace period.

So nothing basically changes except for them issuing a new plastic certificate…. Got it….
@Storriesmith2 ай бұрын
I’ve renewed my CFI 22 times by various means. CFII, MEI, sign offs, part 121 check airman, sitting through weekend courses, FIRC’s. The FIRC’s are mostly useless because the FAA dictates how boring, uh, what material must be covered and how. Nothing will change with this “cost savings measure” because the Feds aren’t here to help! Never have been.
@av8rgrip2 ай бұрын
Arg, ok, the grace period is good, but you are jumping through all the same hoops except they don’t issue a new card. How much is that really saving? I do a FIRC every two years. I’m a part 121 pilot. Most of the regulations I follow are OPs specs. I was a military IP. Can I teach? Sure, but I would have to do a lot of refreshing my basic instructional techniques and knowledge to be effective in getting a student through a checkride. I’ve gone through it with my son, but I really don’t have the time right now. Maybe I will someday. If I ever had my instructor rating expire, I probably would never pursue another checkride. The instructor rating should never expire, period! Requiring a refresher is fine. They are already short DPE’s. Adding additional checkrides into an already overloaded system is stupid.

The FAA wants to save money …. Hey … charge me the $2 for the new certificate and leave the Reg as is … there are more important rules that really need improvement … like increasing the requiere flight experience for private pilots … 40 hours of flight experience is not enough for todays environment.

Still going to cost something.

oh great - now I'll have to put a small piece of first-aid tape on my certificate and write the expiration date on it. 🙂

My father had his CFI many years ago, maybe 20. He went on to the airlines and has been there ever since, never having the time to keep up with the rating. He recently wanted to look into renewing his CFI. How would he go about that? There is conflicting information online and now this new ruling. Any answers help, thanks!
@chrisanderson47992 ай бұрын
He will have to take a checkride. For example if hole is just a basic CFI he can take the test for a CFII or if he has all his CFI certificate ls he will just need to take a checkride. I let mine lapse about 15 or 20 years ago after having all the way up through my CFI/MEI. I was able to take a ride with a DPE and get it reinstated. I will never let it lapse again

I kept up with mine through FIRC and didn’t let it lapse. I’m in the airlines too and don’t really have the time either. When I was military, I was always instructing. We have a lot of experience, but the FAA makes it difficult and cost prohibitive.

Will all existing CFIs be issued new certificates with no expiration date? I know I won't like having a card that's expired on its face, even though I may be authorized to continue giving instructions under the new rule.

Cost saving! Here's the reason obviously...
@thomassheehan41932 ай бұрын
So, call FAA tell them you lost your CFI certificate card. I suppose they will issue you a new one with no expiration date. I kinda hate carrying around a card with an expiration date on it to show to the local cops if you have an incident.
@docsavage99012 ай бұрын
When did the instructor license start “expiring” it was my understanding that the instructor license never expired, you just had to renew/by annual the commercial license. I got my CFII in 2001, stopped flying around 2007 do to medical issues. I hope to renew them Someday.
@motrock93b2 ай бұрын
You might want to look at yours. They have expiration dates, and are only valid for two years. (Prior to this new ruling.)
@RandomName8412 ай бұрын
If you havent done a refresher course it is likely expired and you would have to do another checkride. You shouldn't have let it expire since you could have still done some flight instruction without any medical at all

Yes you will still have to do it like normal for yours and you will get one without an expiration when they send a new one

Mine expires next year. After I renew it and get a certificate without an expiration date, now I have to worry about recency. What happens if I let my recency expire? If it’s three years after my recency expires do I have to take a check ride to get it back or can I just take an firc course? Thank you for the info in this video.
@RandomName8412 ай бұрын
It is essentially exactly the same except you now have a 3 month "grace period" after if you go over the 24 months. If for example it has been 28 months since your last FIRC you will have to take a checkride again like the old way
@italiano1008 күн бұрын
so basically... you can take a FIRC 3 months prior to the current expiration date and be good?
