I love the idea of a turbo NC but can't understand why so few kits exist compared to the NA & NB. Is this due to the greater popularity of the NA & NB models or is the NC engine not as capable for handling boost?
@ChaseJunkie4 жыл бұрын
Pretty much, also NC's aren't popular.. yet...
@mikeb1039 Жыл бұрын
@@ChaseJunkie horse hockey. The plumbing has to fit (old methods didn't) and then theres the gov and emissions. MUCH harder to get away with any performance mods on new cars.
@funkingitup18059 ай бұрын
Both of the comments above are wrong. The reason the NC is trickier is because it is harder to tune. You have to essentially buy a license to a program like Ecutek then take it to a tuner that is able to tune it. Compare that to an NA or NB that could use just mechanical fuel enrichment or swap in a Megasquirt that can hook to a laptop.
@JETZcorpАй бұрын
@funkingitup1805 The stock NC ECU is far more capable and unable than the NA/NB. Ecutek is very common, well understood, and you can flash your NC from an app on your phone. Megasquirt, being standalone, is more powerful of course. It is popular on NA/NB because the stock ECU runs put of capability and forces you to switch to MS or Haltech or something (all of which are very emissions-illegal and won't pass any OBD inspection). You can do that with your NC, too. But it's usually not necessary because the stock ECU can be flashed to handle a turbo with OE drivability and still pass even California smog. Fab9 has done a ton of work with the old csrs too, and they'll tell you the NC is the easiest Miata platform to tune.

Why did you choose to go the turbo route instead of the rotrex kit that you offer, especially with the more linear power delivery that the supercharger system offers did it have anything to do with belt maintenance?
@funkingitup18059 ай бұрын
A Rotrex supercharger is a centrifigual supercharger. As such the peak boost is not achieved until the engine gets revved up. Does that sound like any other form of forced induction you know of? It is similar to a belt driven turbo, and that means the supercharger is a parasitic drain on power. A turbo uses waste energy to produce boost, so it is not a parasite, and that explains why the turbo will always make more power at the same air densities and boost pressures. Modern turbos can hit peak torque at below 2000rpm and peak power at below 3500 rpm, and they don't have as many heat issues as superchargers generally do. There's little obejective reasons to use centifugal superchargers at this point. Twin screws are an entirely different story.
@TropicalDepression1389 ай бұрын
@@funkingitup1805 I am aware of all of those things however peak power unddr 3500 is not ideal in a track situation as you come out of an apex the last thing you want is to shock the tires or load up the drivetrain and break something. Since it is all connected to belt work it would increase power deliver in a more linear fashion with out the same level of tuning as a turbocharger not to mention the heat build up under hood of a turbo system while doing something like time attack situation. Their are quite a few people in the formula d circuit that are using superchared ls engines with direct drive that has massively increased the reliability of belts of the past.
@JETZcorpАй бұрын
@@TropicalDepression138 Basically, you'd choose Rotrex for cost, response, and reliability (thermals and bottom-end stress are MUCH better). You'd choose the turbo because it absolutely takes a dump on the Rotrex in terms of area under the curve, and peak output to a lesser extent. For my preferences and what I use my Miata for, the turbo isn't even in the conversation. My debate is between the Rotrex and a screaming NA build.

Anyone know how much weight this turbocharger adds to the car, accounting for OEM parts that are removed/replaced?
@funkingitup18059 ай бұрын
Between 50-100lbs. Air box is lost. Header is replaced by a heavy turbo manifold and light downpipe. Then add turbo, intercooler, and intercooler piping with couplers. Some miscellaneous stuff like heat shielding, more plumbed hoses and fittings, BOV, etc.

This kit cost more than what i paid for my nc miata which is in mint condition, why so expensive?.
@GoodwinRacing14 жыл бұрын
We often hear the "why would I pay $X that's more than I paid for the car" sentiment... Doesn't matter if you paid $1 for your car or $100,000. Turbos and associated parts still cost what they cost, especially if it's quality components and not stuff off eBay. Garret doesn't discount the turbo just because it's going on a cheap car.
@TheBaldTruth14 жыл бұрын
The way I look at it, is the NC and the turbo kit is still much less than a used Porsche Boxster. The NC reliability, low cost of ownership, mod-ability, and cheap replacement parts make it a bargain. That turbo, even at its cost, basically transforms your Miata in the power department, putting it on par with many other sports cars costing much more than the combined cost of a used NC + turbo.
@funkingitup18059 ай бұрын
$1200 turbo, $1100 manifold and downpipe, $200 injectors, $50 BOV, $300 intercooler piping and fittings, $200 hose, $50 heat shielding, $400 intercooler, $50 air filter, $200 custom brackets. That's about $3750. The kit is $4200. Those margins are so bad it would be tough to stay in business, and you'd depend on economies of scale to make it viable. Look around. You see many turbo NCs?
